The Memory Den

Post » Sat Nov 28, 2015 12:00 am

It's only seen in a fleeting shot (around 1:41 or so, with the walking cyborg-arm trenchcoat/hat guy), but the fact that The Memory Den has a neon sign suggests it's not just background art. The question then, becomes: What IS the Memory Den? Considering it's location in the skeevy part of town, and the name "Den", it would suggest it's not exactly a reputable establishment.

So what can we do in a Memory Den? The obvious answer is that we can somehow experience memories.... but our own? Others? The latter seems more likely, as a high-tech place to remember things you might have forgotten seems kind of tame. But experiencing the memories of someone ~else~ could be quite the thrill. Especially if you can, say, purchase a 'trip' through the memories of a wasteland raider, or a 200 year old survivor.

Or perhaps the Memory Den is even more sophisticated and they can implant memories in you. Make you 'remember' doing things that you never actually did, ala The Replicated Man quest in Fallout-3 (or the Total Recall book/movie). Aside from replicants on the run, I'm not sure how many people would want to replace their memories with someone else's memories... but I suppose if you had some traumatic event in your life (raider attack, etc) that you want to forget, it could be theraputic.

What if it's tied to game systems, though? Like you can 'remember' skills that you 'lost'... an easy way to boost some skill/perk/stats and in some way augment yourself? If nothing else, it might be a handy hook for modders to have non-genre mods ---- you could go to the memory den and "remember" your life as a sword-and-sorcery Dragonborn or something.

I figure it's like in Total Recall. They give you whatever memories you want to pay for.

I'm pretty sure you see it in the concept art of the e3 trailer. Its a pink/purpleish lit room (same color as the letters on the sign) with giant pods set up in it. I'll see if I cant find it again and put a link to it.

Link will go here -> https://youtu.be/SV9JBQo7COk?t=1m45s It's at about 1:46

As to what it is, probably an excuse to use their pre-war assets that they spent all that time making more, as well as to make you feel 'attached' to your family by most likely having you relive memories with them.

I get a strange days kind of vibe about it all.
But i suppose it could have a bit of a Johnny Mnemonic kind of thing attached as well.
Say up front, its all pre-war memory bliss, but it's fronting a black market information market.

Think of this in the context of android spies. Think of how much info they could capture. Now imagine double agent android spies. Those like Harkness, who gain true sentience and sapience.
Suddenly the Synth Retention Bureau seems quite a necessity.

I think its like one of those 'historical' bars you get scattered around the countryside. In the case of the Memory Den there is a simulation pod in the corner that no longer works but is simply there because It DID work. Perhaps its even a quest to get it working again.

I think it will probably look like a Vault Diner just dirtier or some pre war establishment look. Something to spark the memory about the good old days.

at this point it would be disappointing if it was just basically another damn bar playing old 1950s and earlier TV shows on the Television Like ABC Barn Dance, Adventures in Jazz, the Jack Benny Program, the Television Ghost, and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Television_Today

Seriously though that was not even remotely the strangest thing I have dealt with today...

If I walk in an everyone starts saying 'Gary?', its gonna get damn unsettling really quickly.

I generally try and play using my real name on the first run.

Yeah, Dont know where I picked up the habit, I just use my real first name as my characters name the first time I play a game. Kinda weird yeah.

EDIT: Although no more weird at least to me of guys who always play as the female character

A players real name is as good as any other I'd imagine, so I don't think it's weird at all. As for playing as a female, I make at least one character of each gender, depending on what kind of character I'm imagining.

Meh, personally I think folks are overanolysing the name, I think its just a bar or similar establisment with a unusually prestine pre war interior, a place where folks can relive the "memory" of pre war America.

I would imagine folks would be lining up for that. Something oddly familiar sounding about that concept...

Has an Inception vibe to it, from that scene where you see a whole room of people hooked up to those sleep machines, with the line. "They come here to wake up."

Those remind me of the Tranquility Lane pods from Vault 112. I totally missed that when I saw the footage. That's a nice catch.

Hopefully if those are usable in the game they take us somewhere more unique than just a pre-war America. How about the Renaissance or feudal Japan?

Easy skippy. I doubt it's that in depth except a few small simulations things with a quest associated with them.

The memory den could be like the matrix... Where neo learns new skills, so the player character goes in to "learn" new skills, but is actually able to pay to add points to his/her stats.

It would be interesting if that's where the Institute gets their memory imprints for their androids. Imagine a copy of your character walking around and giving you a bad name because he's getting into hijinks.
