The Metal Thread

Well Im not sure how to put words to it without sounding like Im closed off.

I like this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9qcmgD8pHRc
and this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fE8EMWxuZB0
and
I like the cackling witch style vocals of most black metal bands

I found the vocals in Blasphemy to be more like this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TdI7Ya0GiXg
or more like what you see in really extreme forms of grindcore, which Im not so much into.

There is nothing wrong with them, just not my flavor.

Edit: did some research, and what I "think" is that Im not a fan of pitch shifted vocals, which is what makes those incredibly low droning roars. I dont know if Blasphemy is using them or if Im talking out the wrong end, but I at least tried to find the objective reason I dont like it.

No, Blasphemy doesn't use pitch shifters. They're just slightly more guttural than what would be come to be associated with black metal vocals. Which is strange to me, because Blasphemy is first wave stuff (formed in '84), so the style that Blasphemy is doing predates all the stuff on the higher end of the spectrum.

Have you heard Chris Barnes early work with Leviathan? Blows away anything he's done since then. I do like some of his work with Cannibal Corpse though. Six Feet Under is unquestionably the most boring death metal band that has ever existed though. I can't think of a single positive thing to say about them.

Ill check out the Leviathan stuff. I also listened to Torture Killer a little bit and found them to be decent. Cannibal was just insanely good with him on vocals. Six Feet Under to me is more like a Death-Rock band, I think of them strangely as ACDC on steroids probably has something to do with Graveyard Classics vol. 1. I think Chris is just having fun with that band, not really pushing himself artistically but just kicking it, and I think thats the attitude of the whole band, its pretty much old Death metal guys having fun, and if you take it for what it is, its enjoyable.

I guess it is the very gutteral styles that turn me off, but Chris was pretty guttural on Gallery of Suicide back with CC. Enough that the disk jacket contains a disclaimer "No vocal distortion was used to produce any of the sounds on this album" or something like that.

George Fisher was the vocalist for Cannibal when Gallery of Suicide was released. The Bleeding was Barnes last album with CC. Fisher is far superior. Vile is the best CC album in my opinion.

Leviathan was death/thrash stuff. It's included on the SFU boxed set. They only released a demo and a rehearsal tape. Both are great though, and I'd love to see them get re-issued (preferably on vinyl).

Note: Above I typed Torture Killer, when I actually meant to say Tirant Sin. The Album I was thinking of with the Disclaimer was: Tomb of the Mutilated. So 2 foot-in-mouths my bad.

I like the Leviathan stuff (found demo recordings on youtube) kind of reminds me of early Death.

While we are on the topic of Lead Singers and their lesser known bands. Have you ever listened to Carnivore, Peter Steele's (RIP) band previous to Type-O-Negative? A faster and thrashier band that my friends and I really love.

Yep, I've got both the full lengths. If you can't [censored] it, or eat it...then kill it.

Have you heard his band before that, Fallout? A bit more in the punk/hardcoe realm, but great none the less.

I think this needs to be posted in the OP. http://en.allexperts.com/q/Heavy-Metal-2854/sub-genres.htm Even with that I'm still having trouble understanding why so many of my favorite bands are off limits. If you want to only talk about a specific sub genre it would help if I knew what that was.

Awesome and taking a step back, George Fisher is technically superior to Barnes in every way, especially nowadays (Barnes has blown out his voice pretty badly). However I grew up with Chris Barnes in CC and hes got a special place in my heart. Fisher is hilarious off stage because he's really nice and also a mega dork and a mega spazz. Watch his off-stage interviews if you havent already. He starts off really chill and slowly just uber-spazzes.

Something else funny... This is the cheesiest metal video I have ever seen, and Im a ManOwaR fan... this is cheesier than Wisconsin:
Armored Saint-Can U Deliver?

I read it and I think its a bit biased. For most of my subgenre clarification I turn to "The Complete Encyclopedia of Heavy Metal" by Daniel Buzkipan. or Sam Dunn's awesome Documentary Metal: A Headbanger's Journey.

Subgenres are a double edged sword because on one tip they can start arguments or assinine proportions, but on the other its helpful if your into a particular type and want to find related artists. I dont get hung up on it too much.

A decent Subgenre Chart (Decent, not perfect):

I hope this is the last time we bring up sub-genres etc. It's stated right there in the first post of EVERY new iteration of this thread, if you are unsure if a band, etc. is ok to discuss to PM one of the regulars.

I missed the Barnes era of Cannibal Corpse by 1 album. I got into death and black metal at the tail end of 1995, Barnes was already gone by the time I got to see CC live in 1996, when they released Vile. I only like two of the Barnes era albums (Eaten Back to Life and Tomb of the Mutilated), so I'm not too hurt that I never saw them with Barnes.

Since you're new, why don't you share with us a top 10 list of your favorites or something. (I really like lists...)

Personally I don't care for sub-genres either. Unfortunately so many people do that I need something to reference just to know what they're talking about. The way I see it, you get a bunch of guys together with guitars, drums and a distortion pedal and you got yourself a metal band. It might not be good metal but it's metal all the same.

If you like The Sword you should check Briton Rites.

All of the awesomeness without any of the "hipster" pretense. (If you've ever seen The Sword live in their early days you'll know exactly what I mean...)

My Music Story:

I grew in the middle of nowhere on a small family farm in Nebraska. The first music I knew was my fathers taste in old time country Waylon Jennings, Johnny Cash, David Allan Coe.

My Parents later divorced and my mother felt that I should learn to appreciate fine art, so she would take my sister and I to Opera and Symphony, and play it around the house a lot.

When I moved up to where I live now, its decently close to Omaha and I got into Rap and Hip Hop

Then I was listening to the radio in High School and heard Thoughtless by KoRn and I was hooked on bands like Korn and Disturbed and Slipknot.

A few months later I had an art teacher who used to play Black Sabbath and Alice Cooper while we did our art projects, this was when my life started and I went Metal. It was the IRON MAN Riff. That is the most awesome piece of guitar ever.

I saw Nargaroth discussed a while back. While Kanwulf is a tool beyond all belief, I can't help but enjoy Geliebte Des Regens and Rasluka Part II. And his cover of "I Burn For You" introduced me to Lord Foul.

I just can't get into most of the Nargaroth stuff, even if Kanwulf wasn't full of crap, it'd still be mediocre European black metal.

Lord Foul was great, even if it was just a joke band.

I wouldn't be surprised if Kanwulf claimed his music was inscribed on papyrus scrolls hundreds of year ago, making himself the first metal musician.

And if Lord Foul is a joke band, that's one pretty convincing/awesome joke.

The only member of Lord Foul posthumously claimed it was a joke, some of the samples sort of make me feel like he was telling the truth.

Some of the samples are really awkwardly placed. Like there is the intro, followed by another sample in Holy One.

I managed to get some really low quality demo type things recorded for one of my bands, and I'm curious as to what you guys think.

http://www.quickfilepost.com/download.do?get=2476d9ccfd4e34fdf2377587d83cb949 - complete with awful singing and bizzare vocal effects. Be careful, I was still sorting out levels when I recorded this so this one is quite loud
http://www.quickfilepost.com/download.do?get=2e4725ee616335acd8e399b4c08770bd

It's recorded from a laptop mic, hence the poor sound quality, and obviously these are really early days, but I hope you can hear the Sunn O)))/Electric Wizard synthesis we were going for when we wrote this stuff. These bits are just samples, but soon I'm gonna get together with the other band member and we're gonna sort out recording full songs on some nicer equipment.

By the way, I know -core bands aren't discussed here but surely that doesn't include grindcore bands? (Napalm Death etc.)

Anyway, here's a song from a Finnish death metal band that I've enjoyed and thought I'd share since most of you probably haven't heard of them http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PuLk2rkYI2c

No one here seems particularly into grindcore but I love a bit of Napalm Death or Carcass every so often.

The only other grind I have is the stuff that came in the Earache Peel Sessions box set... Which is one of the best value for money things you'll ever buy, btw.

R'lyeh, I just gotta say, your recommendation of Root was great. I know, it has been a while since then, but I only got started listening to them not so long ago. The Temple in the Underworld is epic and the riff continueing through Message is made of pure win.

Root is indeed fantastic.

Deathchain is one of the members of Demilich's newer band, that's how I found them.

I love grindcore, but don't have a lot to say about it.
