The Metal Thread

Post » Sun Apr 18, 2010 5:14 pm

Since you can't quote a quote, in the first post of this thread, it was metioned you can't mention some bands because they are not metal but they the person goes on to say he will not explain it? WTF?! If you can not explain what is metal then this topic should be closed. Why can't I talk what I think metal is, and then say I am wrong when it will not be explained?

If you'd actually read the rules (which were drawn up by a few members, including myself, and some forum moderators) thoroughly you'd have noticed that far from saying that we wont explain it - they simply ask people to keep discussion like this to PMs. They're not up to negotiation, as they've worked fine for a long time now, but I'm sure most of he thread regulars would be happy to clarify stuff in private. The reason we don't like to talk about it in here is because threads get clogged up with off topic arguments started by people such as yourself, and that didn't help anyone...

Otherwise, I think RLF's answer was firly clear. "Hair metal", like "nu-metal", was a title given to bands with a particular aesthetic by record labels, radio stations and music journalists which has little (musically) to do with the metal genre as it is widely understood today. Yes, genres aren't static predefined things, but nevertheless the wide variety of bands that cover what is most commonly understood to be "metal" do share a lot musically and in terms of fanbase that nu-metal and hair metal (and metalcore) don't.

Sotajumala is decent stuff. Never heard 'em before, but that sample wasn't bad. Certainly has the modern death metal feel to it...mostly because of the modern production I think. Nothing I'd run out and try to find, but I'd certainly grab the CD if I saw it in a distro or something.

Thanks for the rec., Odelpex.

As far as fests, the only one I'm interested in is the second annual NWN fest in Germany, and being from the western US, that's not something I'm going to be attending.

I see. Well no problem, happy I could help. Do they even host very many metal festivals in the US then?

Yeah, there are a ton, they just don't interest me. I'm not a very sociable person, I get irritable around a group of people to the point of not having any fun...so the line-up would have to be REALLY [censored] SPECTACULAR for me to even consider it. The only fest with a line-up like that this year is the NWN Fest.

Not a single filler band on that entire bill. Plus they're in talks with Vulcano about playing as well.

Oh yeah. I dunno, I enjoy being in the pit so that's one of the reasons I like going to fests etc. but it's not for everyone. Walls of death are too hardcoe for me though.. :S

Also, "these metal" threads, have been around for a LONG time...and the rules where drawn up by regulars, and approved by moderators...so if you don't like the atmosphere, you're free to start your own thread about whatever sort of "metal" you like.

Well my friend, if you are going to have rules in a thread, then those rules have to stated. I can start talking about how great Def Lepard was, and find out it's not ok, that is not fair for me, because you didn't say what metal was. Why should I have to look in prior posts to what the rules were? Why can't they be stated with the other wall of text as well? 2 or 3 more sentences wouldn't have hurt.

I shouldn't have to start another thread, if I think Def Lepord is metal and then discuss it here.

Ok, so lets try and talk about metal. What is a metal group now? Because what I thought was metal is not considered metal now. So what groups are considered metal now my friend? What about Savatage. They are my favorite band, and I consider them heay metal. So are they considered metal?

We actually had a dancing discussion in one of the other threads. I'm not a fan of "moshing" myself, though it's fine if others do it...so long as they respect my space. I'm an old man compared to most of the kids at these shows (I'm not really that old, but I'm not in my late teens or early 20's anymore), and I have better things to do than abuse my already failing body that way. I'm also vehemently anti-drunkard...so the idea of having to share space with people who spend the entire fest drinking, acting like morons, and then trying to blame their absolutely intolerable behavior on the booze makes me both hostile and annoyed (hell, I'm annoyed just thinking about it, and I'm not even going to a fest.) I'm really a solitary curmudgeon.

I don't even go to regular shows most of the time, as I find it preferable to just listen to the LP at home.

Well when I went to concerts back in the day, People were standing up, nobody sitting down, and we would bang our heads pump our fists in the air. Now I went to a concert, while it wasn't what you guys consider metal, it was rock, and people were sitting down, telling me to sit because they can't see. WTF?!

What has changed? Does this stuff still happen and "metal" concerts?

Do you think you're the first person to come in here and try to stir the pot? If so, I'm going to direct you to the back of the line...

Honestly, if you don't like the rules, have issue with them, etc. send someone a PM detailing it. Be aware, that no one is going to sit around and define metal for you though...it's not our fault that you didn't keep up. Like I said in my previous post, nothing has changed, what was truly metal before is still metal now.

In 15 years of being into metal, I've never once been to a show where people sat down...

Also, Savatage is great stuff. I'm not really a fan of too much after Gutter Ballet, but their early work was great.

I am not trying to stir the pot. I was just asking. I don't have an issue with the rules. All I asked was what defines Metal, and why that part coudln't be posted. If the big wall of text could have been posted why not the extra few more sentences describing what metal was?

For you to tell me because I didn't keep up with it? Pardon me? I just noticed the thread now, and I thought I would participate. Sorry I didn't know I HAD to read all the other threads on the topic.

I've never been to a metal show where anyone sat down (probably because I've never been to a metal show that had seats ).

I have been to a few. Guns and Roses, AC/DC, Kiss, Monsters of Rock wich had Dokken, Scorpion, Van Halen Metallica, These I consider all Metal, and they had seats and unless you were passed out, nobody sat down.

Oh goody, I just read Lord Belial have come back together. Any fans of them here? I'm more a fan of their later era work. Monarchy of Death is one of the better melodic black metal songs I've heard.

Also, slightly off-topic, but lolwut at Dimmu Borgir touring with KoRn? Although I like both bands, I think it is slightly funny that they're touring together.

See out of that, I would only consider Metallica as a metal band. The rest are rock/heavy rock. And obviously, only early Metallica at that.

And I've seen people sitting down at Dream Theater/Opeth gigs, it just depends on the venue and the person. Some people like to sit down. I prefer to stand myself, but depending on the band, I wouldn't be adverse to sitting.

I've only been to two gigs in my life where I had a seat (Iron Maiden and AC/DC) but I was surrounded by old people so the crowd was hardly rocking out... I usually don't go to gigs that big unless they're festivals. Which means I'll probably end up sitting on the grass at some point I guess, but thats festivals for you. I aint spending my whole day stood up for no man...

I think early Lord Belial is tolerable, mostly just Kiss The Goat, Enter The Moonlight Gate, and The Unholy Crusade.

Some of the guys in Lord Belial are in a fantastic black/death band Sadistic Grimness, who I enjoy much better.

The Hammu Burger and Korn tour sounds like someone is planning a BBQ.

I saw Opeth in my hometown, and approx. 1/3 of the people attending (ca. 1000) were sitting down. My reaction was very much like yours.

Yup. I swear, he didn't blink ONCE during the concert.

They had some problems with Lindas monitor and feedback on the hardingfiddle, but overall they did an amazing gig. They even opened with a brand new song!

Aw man, listening to In the Nightside Eclipse and wondering why I'd forgotten about it for so long. Majestic...

I was listening to N.M.E's Unholy Death earlier (another one of RLF's commendable recommendations) and it got me on anoter black metal binge.

Love that NME record. I wish I could find the CD of it, since it has the Machines of War demo included on it. I've only got a PicLP.
