For any other fans of Atheist...

From Roadrunner Records:
Reactivated seminal technical metal pioneers ATHEIST have set "Jupiter" as the title of their long-awaited fourth album, tentatively due in November. The CD is being recorded at LedBelly studios in Atlanta, Georgia with engineer Matt Washburn and will be mixed by Jason Suecof (TRIVIUM, CHIMAIRA, DEVILDRIVER).

Regarding the direction of the new material, Shaefer wrote in a recent online posting, "[We] have taken great strides to make this the record we, as fans, would want to hear from ATHEIST. It's ferocious, intelligent, and dead-balls heavy as [censored]!

"When people hear this, they're going to say, 'It's ATHEIST!'"

"There are so many twists and turns in the average ATHEIST song, and we felt like it was very important to have enough killer material written so as to make it the most interesting record we have ever created. We wanted to make sure we took the next logical step in the evolution of our music. According to the critics out there, it's a tall — almost impossible — order. However, we feel like we have done it."

"Our late and great friend and foundational element of the ATHEIST sound, Roger Patterson, was always with us in spirit in the process of writing," added Shaefer. "In fact, that frantic, technical Patterson spirit has come shining through once more in the form of Jonathan Thompson, our newest guitar player. 'JT' is a young-spirited multi-talented player — he also plays bass for Flynn's band GNOSTIC. As long-time ATHEIST fans, JT and Chris Baker understand what ATHEIST is at its core and what the fans expect. Both have proven to be invaluable in bringing out that classic ATHEIST sound and have been instrumental the course of writing this long-awaited record."

I'm not sure if I'm feeling so great about this one. Kelly Shaefer's vocal sound terrible on any of the recent live performances, and the new guitarist sounds like he has some trouble keeping up with the faster songs.

Last Thread needed locking, it was at 201 posts. May as well make a new thread for the metal thred.

Agreed, especially when bands like Warbringer fronting a more modern thrash movement. Metallica was alright in the begining, but "...And Justice for all" is when they went sour if you ask me.

the reason they went "sour" is because cliff died

I disagree, a lot of the songs on the first album where written when Ron McGovney was playing bass, It's not like Cliff was that important.

Metallica went sour because they bought their own hype, became huge rockstars who where completely out of touch with the music that made them that way, and then decided that they could shovel half-ass records down their fans throats.

See out of that, I would only consider Metallica as a metal band. The rest are rock/heavy rock. And obviously, only early Metallica at that.

And I've seen people sitting down at Dream Theater/Opeth gigs, it just depends on the venue and the person. Some people like to sit down. I prefer to stand myself, but depending on the band, I wouldn't be adverse to sitting.

Actually in the 70's and into the early 80's Kiss, Deep Purple, AC/DC, Black Sabbath, Dokken, Alice Cooper, Motorhead, Scorpions, Iron Maiden and Van Halen where all considered Metal bands, adorned denim jackets where their patches where sawed onto the same jackets side by side, they where all played on "metal" nights, covered in the metal media of the time.

Then the Mid 80's came, Punk and NWOBHM influenced some bands from the US (The shortest and most general sum up ever) and along came thrash and a split in the community, a someone I knew was scared out of the local metal pub for wearing a Slayer T-shirt, Older fans criticized the newer bands for being just noise (again being general), also thrash fans hated the glam fans (both genres still considered being a part of metal at the time). Although I saw many jackets with Slayer, Exodus, Motley Crue and WASP patches side by side

It seems the divide continues with important bands of the history of the genre being regulated into "hard rock" and so many sub genres (as happened to punk) to ensure there is plenty to argue about ;)

However, this threads definition of what is metal is to stop silly flame wars and should be respected, but I view it as being for modern metal with a few exceptions where the influence of the bands on modern metal is undeniable (and an unhealthy love for Manowar seems to help)

I like looking at the evolution of genres and find it interesting when bands are kicked out, I remember when Kiss (with the blood and fire breathing) where an extreme metal band, then a kiddie band, and then WASP where extreme then comical and again when Reign in Blood was the most extreme album never to be topped and then over taken very quickly the next year with scream, bloody, gore.

Edit: At the time some people thought Metallica sold out on Ride the lightning as Fade to black was a ballad then on Master of puppets as it was on a major, then Justice for all as they did a music video, as I like those albums I blame the black album as everyone who used to say they svcked suddenly wanted to borrow my albums, and the black album was recorded to sell millions and it did and it all went very downhill from there

Snip

I'm well aware of all that, but to me most of those bands are rock, not metal (Motorhead and Maiden to be precise, can't say I've heard Dokken). Maybe it's because I'm only 20, but I laugh a little when people say AC/DC is a metal band. As for the bit on Metallica, I really don't care enough. I've got a couple of their albums (Master of Puppets and Ride the Lightning on vinyl because they were cheap and I hadn't given much more than a brief listen to the "hits"), and I'd give them away if somebody would take them I find them that dull.

I'm not expecting people to agree with me, but I've never actually considered bands like that as metal.

Metallica went sour when Lars Ulrich and James Hetfield joined the band. What a pair of [censored]s.

Okay, so they wrote some catchy songs (most of which got onto Ride the Lightning) but even then they went on to play them with all the musical passion of a scowly face emotion. Like this one:

And it didn't "go downhill" from the black album. If anything thing it went slightly uphill, because they stopped trying to play thrash metal and started playing the sort of insipid [censored]tard music that appeals to insipid [censored]tards like Lars Ulrich, but at least now they were on their own wavelength. And then it went downhill again when James Hetfield turned from an angry, drunk nobhead into an angry, really drunk nobhead. And then even further downhill when he turned into a tame, insecure, preachy, reformed-alcoholic nobhead and wrote St. Anger.

Just wanted to give a heads up to anyone who orders stuff online:

Avoid Death To Mankind / Die Todesrune at all costs. They have some good stuff, and I won't call them a rip-off, because I did eventually get my stuff...but it took them 3 months. They also lied to me several times about having set the package, when they hadn't. I had to open 2 PayPal disputes to finally get them to get my stuff to me. Avoid at all costs.

Any good metal releases recently? I think my last big purchase was Belus and I havn't kept up with the Black Metal music scene much. Or any good Doom Metal?

The more obscure the better.

I don't do much Doom Metal stuff. Truppensturm's Salute to the Iron Emperors is pretty awesome for Black Metal. New Ares Kingdom (death metal) and Blasphemophager (blackened death metal) albums came out in January I think and both of those are pretty decent.

Are any of the Toxic Holocaust EPs and demos worth looking at?

I bought Sabaton's new album, Coat of Arms, last weekend. It's awesome.

So, like, the new Rhapsody [of Fire] album. Any good?

Yes. It's better than the last two albums they released, in my opinion. It's more on par with their older stuff, with a lot of the songs being more speed oriented.

Another Native American (technically Native Canadian) band that I just found out is Gyibaaw. They play the style of black/death that is commonly referred to as war metal. Lyrics are in their native language.

Three doom releases that I haven't stopped playing this year,

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EI_PVhrRcUc (Awesome heavy/doom in the vein of Pentagram, Witchfinder General)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NvsOghA2Rrs (Death/doom from Finland about b-grade horror films!)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ObR751rqGr0&feature=PlayList&p=2774D3AC2779E721&playnext_from=PL&playnext=1&index=2 (Epic doom from Sweden. Heavy Bathory influence).

Also (for those interested), Unholy are planning to re-issue their first four albums and also a compilation containing their demo material and some unreleased stuff later this year. Keep an eye out for that one.

Yep...I know, but I wanted to be sure to be a bit more specific than that. I didn't question the Native American tag, just also noted that they where native to Canada. :P

This sounds like metal to me...
Also, for those who know Leppard for crap such as "Pour Some Sugar On Me" (I like a lot of hair metal bands (although a lot of them are in fact rock bands),but this song is pretty awful) and the gay pop-rock they're doing now, check out this:

I wonder if Metallica was just another forgotten thrash band, would people hate on them as much as they do...I do think they're overrated,I am annoyed by "metalheads" who listen only to Metallica and no other metal bands,I do think they're douchebags, and I will be the first to agree that St. Anger was an awful pile of [censored],falling into the "Miley Cyrus can do better" category. The 90's albums and DM aren't really good, but they aren't as bad as some people say IMHO.However,I can't see how are their first 4 albums bad in any way. They certainly aren't considered classics for no reason...

Yeah I know they're classics, I can understand that, I just really hate... I dunno, their style? It's not something I can really put into words, but its something I can hear on all their albums, from first to last (including St. Anger) and it's something that really grates on me - not that I'm saying all their albums sound similar, just that they share this particular characteristic. They have a really "listen to us, we're in a thrash metal band!" attitude that just seems so rigid and macho. And that fits really well with their personalities, so it can't just be coincidence.~

Oh, and no, if they were just another forgotten thrash band I probably wouldn't hate them. But I wouldn't like them either.
