The "Mod Mentality"

Post » Tue May 17, 2011 5:11 am

Why mod? Simple, it's fun. It's hard work, can be very frustrating and may not even be finished, but I enjoy making mods regardless. That's the only reason i mod, because I like doing it.

Well I run a side business where I build computers for people. I could make a desktop that can run mid-high details on any game for 700 dollars for people. Just haven't really got enough equity to expand my custom computer business to the internet hehe. Of course, that's 700 dollars without a monitor, which you can just plug the tower into your tv and it will be a "console"

Hmm, can i connect the tower to my Visio TV with HDMI (I don't know much about gaming on computers so don't laugh at me if it's obvious). I have a 1080p HD tv and i don't want it to go to waste. And I want to have an Interface that is navigable with a controller (and have a keyboard on the side of course). ALSO i want to be able to run SKYRIM on Maximum settings.

There is actually a few dozen, if not more, combinations in hardware for consoles. They don't keep using the exact same components. As prices fluctuate, they will switch out various components to different makes, models, and brands. They all have near identical specs, but since you said "millions of different potential hardware combinations" for the PC you obviously included this situation in that number as well.

Yes, I did. For instance, think of all the graphics cards for PCs. Then think of all the different companies that produce the same architecture of card. You can get Nvidia, Sparkle, Asus, EVGA, etc. Tons of different configurations for the same architecture. It can get pretty complex.

Also because you can change the game to be more like how you want it to be. And it's good experience (and can net you a job, like it did for Jorge "Oscuro" Salgado).

Hey you know what guys?

If you wish to (and can) invest the time and money into building a high end gaming pc and reap the benefits there of, cool.

If you don’t want too, or have more important priorities for your time and money, also cool.

Personally, I think the whole debate is an indictment of nerddom. Who gives a [censored]?

Can we talk about the game now?

Nerddom isn't a bad thing. Just means that we are smarter than others

If people want a computer that will easily be able to play Skyrim at mid-high settings, send me a pm, that way no one can complain that you have to have a $1600 computer to run skyrim and they would rather use a console when you can have a computer that is 3x better than a console for just a few hundred dollars more.

Hmm, can i connect the tower to my Visio TV with HDMI (I don't know much about gaming on computers so don't laugh at me if it's obvious). I have a 1080p HD tv and i don't want it to go to waste. Yes, I can make you a tower that can connect to your TV with an HDMI cable and I would have to do research to see if there is software to make you able to navigate your computers interface with a controller (though I don't know why you would when you can have a mouse) but most games of late allow for perfect compatibility of console controls in the PC version. To run Skyrim on maximum settings, I can probably pull that off for ~1000 dollars but that's just a guess because we don't know the baseline minimum system requirements. But yeah, I use my 52" 1080p HDTV as my monitor for my m17x re all the time. It's a really nice display hehe.

So I've been spending some time on this forum reading occasional threads mostly lurking. What I've seemed to notice in any discussion of features to be/wish or suggested to be in Skyrim, the bulk majority of post have "If not there are mods" in them.

While mods are a great thing and certainly should be put in and not taken for granted I am somewhat disappointed at this attitude. However I think that mods should be more for preference or additional content. No mods should be necessary to fix a poor game play mechanic or simple laziness. Should you as the consumer not demand a good product? I don't know about you but I certainly don't buy games for a DIY project. I also don't want to wait for mods to come around for it to be playable. Or what if someone plays on PS3 or Xbox 360? Mods can't save them.

No I am not saying that this game is going to turn out terrible and only mods can save it, I do not expect that. However my question is, at what point will you draw the line? Honestly, why should we the consumers allow Bethesda to even get the notion in their head that they can simply release something and if we don't like it fix it our self's (not to imply that this is the way it is but with things like PC UI on Oblivion and Fallout 3 considering it was a know issue hardly fixed in Fallout 3 it seems to be the attitude that Bethesda is acquiring). Would you continue to buy TES games if they became of low quality but you knew the mod community support is strong?

Unfortunately no one will know if this is truly an issue until the game actually releases. I personally will buy the game day one because Bethesda still has a good track record but this is an issue that concerns me.

I Draw the line at thing mods don't fix or take a long time. Equipment slots, physics, voices, etc With that said I think Beth makes great games, with or without mods. People are different, Beth can make a great game, a fantastic one. But everyone has defrent tastes, I am just augmenting the game to my taste, I don't consider many of my mods fixing things, just making it more to my taste.

Yeah, that too. I'm a game design student and level design is something I've always enjoyed, so modding is good practice for me. Allthough every aspect of modding is really.

And while I know it is too late to say this, the attitude that one can download a mod and fix the game, that is what I mean by spoiled.

Its only spoiled if the reason for the fix was something Bethesda was never going to do anyways, like how some people "fix" the game by removing fast travel and using a different implementation, but is still complained about. I never expected Bethesda to remove this style of fast travel, and I really don't care that they didn't. If I don't like it, I can mod it out, but I'm not going to complain because it was obvious from the beginning that they were going to keep it. Just like it was obvious that ultra realism (eating, sleeping, drinking, temperature, etc) was not going to exist, but I can still mod that in just fine, and probably will.

Now, some things that are perceived by many to simply be bad game design SHOULD be fixed, and I suppose that is your point. Instead of just saying "Oh well, I'll fix it with mods." I would much rather see people getting up in arms about a bad mechanic or design choice, especially since console users can't mod.

Believe me, I want a good game as well, especially since the more mods I "need" to use, the more memory (RAM and hard drive) its going to eat up. I want the game to be as complete and awesome as possible on its own.

Yeah, but assuming the modder knows what he/she is doing, have the tools, and have the PC to handle it, that would still mean they could essentially "fix" the game with no problems? Or is that asumption a little too naive of me?

It depends on just how much you want to fix. But, even in things you can fix, you need more than just the construction set if you want to make big changes. You need a place to create whatever objects you'll use, and some knowledge of scripting for any custom scripts. Plus.. the construction set had a couple of bugs if its own

I wont dispute for a moment that there are some very talented individuals in the modding community. But I think even they'd agree that Bethesda has more tools/manpower at their disposal to integrate the changes better into the game. It could take years for some things to be introduced via mods. (not to mention that some great overhauls that finally came out could have plenty of compatibility problems) Plus, in cases of glitches/bugs, it really shouldn't be up to the mods to fix these stuff. The unofficial patch fixed hundreds of issues, but still they can't get them all.. A big thanks to them though, they've fixed most stuff..

Finally then there's the side of the end user. Those who will use the mods. Too many mods can cause problems such as incompatibility, or wrong position in the load order. Heck, even Bethesda's own DLC's could cause problems in the loading order and stuff (knight of the Nine is pretty legendary in that). Then you also need stuff like script extender to use custom scripts, and Oblivion Mod Manager because the game doesn't let you change the load order, and if it's wrong, you're ***ed. Now... I'm not saying it's nuclear physics, and I'm glad it's there because I can tailor the game to my preferences to an extend, but if given the choice, one would prefer to play the game and spend as little time as possible "fixing" it.

Yes you can IF your GPU has DVI or HDMI output. HDMI is basically DVI+Sound. If your GPU has only DVI out then you can get an adapter that will convert it to an HDMI but you won't have sound on the TV.

This annyos me too. Oh, don't worry, who cares if the game is made to be utterly crap (not that it will be)? We'll just mod it!

Especially since the majority of the market is console users.

Don't take my comment out of context now I'm not debating this issue. I was simply illustrating the reason why people keep bringing up mods in topics here.

Especially since the majority of the market is console users.

That's the choice they made when they purchased their consoles. You get what you pay for.

But like I said, we all want the game to be as good as possible, but there will always be features the PC users want that Bethesda won't give us (like realism or different fast travel methods). We will mod those, and we will enjoy it, and console users will just have to live with what they got.

We all make our choice of platform. We all have to live with it.

Yes you are right it's pointless to [censored] about how we wont get mods in Skyrim for consoles, but i hope some day us console players will have the ability to mod... not today though, not with this generation of consoles, and most likely not the next generation, but one day.

consoles are becoming more and more like PC's, with internet browsers and whatnot so there is hope.

This. People that want a cheap system that will allow them to play the game on medium graphics is their choice. They chose to go a more money saving route at the sacrifice of better graphics and the ability to mod their game. If you wanted more control over your game value, then you should've shelled out more money....

Being a nerd doesn’t make someone smart, but looking down on people because of, all things, what system they play video games on does make someone a nerd.

Ive got a lot of buddies who game, on many deferent systems, and I never heard any debate about it until this forum. I guess we‘d rather have fun then try and bring each other down.

I have a lot of life and a lot of other hobbies to spend money on. I already have a 360, and it works just fine. If this makes me an uncool gamer, I can totally live with that. If being on this forum a year before the game ships doesn’t cement my hardcoe status, I can live with that too. Not that theres anything wrong with it, but Im not buying a new pc just to play video games on.

So what?

I have many mods installed at Oblivion, and I made a few small ones myself.
It's not that the game didn't pleased me,actually it's the exact opossite and I do make and use mods on Oblivion because I love it.
A mod takes time, and nobody is going to invest so much time for a game that doesn't like.
But are things that can't be at the game from the beggining, and that's because every single player might want something completely different.
For example modds have created a playble star wars race and light sabers so they can play the game as jedis.
But does an Elder Scrolls game have to have jedis ?
NO.
Somebody else made a mod that adds a complete set of ancient Spartan armor and weapons so they can play as Leonidas or some eother Spartan.
Does that mean that TES must have spartans?
NO,again

I think that was a good example for telling you that different people have different tastes, and that's why there will always be mods.

I completely agree with you.

I don't understand that attitude either, neither do i really want to. Bethesda should make the best damn game possible.

I admit that there might be a limit. Some features might be too small and unimportant for Bethesda to care about. Though, personaly, one of the things i love about Bethesda is their eye for details. It's often pretty big things they want to leave to the mods anyway. I don't use mods, so obviously, i am completely dependent on Bethesda.

Well first of all, you have the wrong definition of nerd, because a nerd isn't someone who looks down on others, that's an elitist. Secondly, I wasn't in any way attacking anyway, I was plugging a service so that we cut down on the bickering. Cool, you don't want to buy a pc, but a pc isn't just for gaming. For a few hundred dollars more than a console you can get a system that plays a game far better than a console and you can also surf the internet and do other numerous tasks that a console can't.

Correction. Consoles are stripped computers made affordable for the masses. It should also be stated that Microsoft/Sony/Nintendo control the experience console gamers receive. Having mods implemented into consoles could lead to too many issues and problems for Microsoft/Sony/Ninento, that could lead to spending over a billion dollars fixing a problem like the red rings of death. If it's not something the game developer releases, it's doubtful Microsoft would allow player-created content, which anything could happen (this would get one's account banned anyways).

*snip*

Dont you mean you get what we pay for.

Console users pumping most of the money into the industry is what allows big budget games like Skyrim to exist in the first place, and gives some pc users the ability to sit around pontificating while looking down on them.

No need to say thank you.
