The more I hear about dual wielding the less I see the point

Post » Sun Oct 02, 2011 4:41 am

So from what I understand if I dual wield I can only attack with one weapon at a time so I won't attack faster.

Also if I dual wield I can't block so I'm at a defensive disadvantage.

So I have no increase in attack speed which would increase damage and a decrease in defense.

So far the only plus stated that dual wield will have is that you can wield different types of weapon to cover a weakness but switching weapons isn't that hard in that situation.

I'm hoping something will come out that shows why dual wielding has an advantage. Am I missing a piece of information?

You're missing the fact that you actually DO attack faster with 2 weapons and you also are missing the fact that you don't own skyrim nor have you played it nor have you seen the gold version. All you have heard is speculation exaggerated by an excessive amount of gamer previews.

Also, no one has talked about the duel wielding perk tree. There COULD be a perk which allows you to swing both weps simultaneously

Use your favorite weapon in your right hand, and a weapon with a special spell effect in the other. That's a use.

I thought the attack speed was increased? And why wouldn't we be able to attack with both weapons as a power-attack?

Here is the point, its Skyrim you can choose to do what you like, plus the duel wielding allows faster attack and as you said a combination of weapons. If your going to duel wield i suggest HEAVY ARMOUR.

Read my comment. And there will be a power attack involving both weapons. So silly to implement dw and not have that in there as a perk

1. There isn't a duel wielding skill why would it have a perk tree? Skills have perk trees not random stuff you can just do. That has been announced.

2. I'm not laying down the law and saying it is useless and bad. I'm saying the information they released so far is lacking any evidence to get me excited. When I hear about it I more wonder if it will be balanced. Was in confirmed you attack faster in you dual wield I can't find that data. Either way I'm not saying it's useless BECAUSE I don't own skyrim and it isn't released yet.

3. I didn't hear speculation though. I'm following released information an d preview plays and data from them. it is confirmed with this when dual wielding only one weapon attacks at a time. It is confirmed the perks are part of skills which means there won't be a dual wielding perk tree because there isn't a dual wielding skill. There is a one handed perk tree and everything in that tree is confirmed and nothing in it says attack with both hands at once.

if attack speed is increased in general then it gives a purpose. but that was a piece of confirmed information i missed.

I'm pretty sure the perks will make or break dual wielding. using a shield spell before attacking may help, of using that dual wield power attack from behind while sneaking might bring brutal 1 shotters.
we'll see!

for those of us on PC, I think there is massive dual wielding potential in mods.

18 skills and 280 perks. I think there will be a perk tree for things outside of skills... Could be wrong

Oh and data is objective btw. Information is subjective. You were reading info not data.

A main hand dagger gets 15x damage instead of 10x. Adding the other dagger that has 10x, I'd say that's a pretty good reason to dual wield power attack from sneak.

Eh? Where?

Pete's twitter. He said we can do combo power attacks. It can be seen in the official trailer. We haven't seen the 1 handed perk tree either. Probably some dual wielding perks.

The ranked perks bringing it to 15.5 perks average for a skills seems about right to me.

Most of those 280 perks are actually ranks. For example, two-handed prowess counts as 5 perks because it has 5 ranks. I wouldn't be surorised at all if there was nothing for dual wielding. Although there may be something in the one-handed tree(?).

It's also optional, that's pretty important to know.

And I'm fairly sure there are perks.

Did anyone think you can enchant your weapons? I think there's a perk for having two enchantments on an item. So dual wielding can potentially give you four different destruction magic enchantments plus the damage from the weapon. that's about as powerful as you can be.

Dual wielding will have higher DPS than single wield unless the devs managed to spend five years developing a major title and never got around to basic balance. Dual wield power attack is one reason why but I would bet that hit rate is higher too.

There could possibly be a related perk in the 1H tree but I doubt it because I think the perks mirror 2H. There could conceivably be a non-tree quest related perk somewhere but I wouldn't count on it.

As for whether the higher DPS makes dual wield attractive to you, that is impossible to answer. Personally my melee character will switch to dual wield when appropriate but not use it exclusively because block looks like too much fun. I think people who don't take block will tend to have magic in the other hand sometimes also. If you have no magic and no block, and are just going to dual wield all through the game, it is your own fault if gameplay is boring. (You meaning "whoever")
