Is the Morrowind Community Dying? Will we die?

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 3:17 am

Indeed, well said Emma, I think a lot of the reason for the lack of activity in Oblivion modding is down to the game itself. There was a great flurry of activity at the time of release to fix ingame problems, but once that was done, there is very little of interest in the world itself, and a lot of the good mods have no reference to the elder scrolls world itself. Morrowind, on the other hand, has a world which inspires and interests people, to add to it rather than fix endless niggling problems. Morrowind doesn't have this problem , and less people are likely to get sick of modding when it already has a strong base to work from.

Plus,. as technology gets more advanced, there's more stuff that can go wrong. Like the Fallout patch that broke pretty much every mod that used static objects.

One thing that just hit me...

People have been comparing games and movies in this thread.

Now, if you were to rank the 10 most notable movies over time... How many of them would be new ones?

And how many of you would include old 'eternal' movies like Casablanca or Gone With the Wind in your list?

I think Morrowind will remain a game-Casablanca... maybe the graphics aren't that good, maybe the audio svcks, maybe the npcs aren't always behaving or moving as they should... but it's still an eternal classic!

Here's looking at you, kid! :foodndrink:

Its already dead if you ask me.

Its not like you have people making a new engine for it or anything.
Or like two new shaders are released every few days.
Its not like there is some program out there that updates Morrowinds graphics to compete with some new games.
Its not like anybodys retexturing anything.
There most definately isnt any landscape additions going on.

I mean, nothing is going on...

I agree, but on your last point-that's exactly why we are here, when I play Morrowind, the graphics are actually better, in many aspects, then say Fallout 3.

EDIT:

I think this calls for :foodndrink:

I already made my points clear, but I would just like to add my will of being a bit sentimental! ;)

Also, I laughed at reading ZackG's post, such lovely sarcasm =) First two lines I actually thought he was serious because, well... Sarcasm isn't a usual thing you see on a forum because people generally don't get it.

Maturity+ =)
(Side note I have been here like 6 years o_O)

Well. I lurked the forum without registering for about half a year or so while I was playing MW for the first time, at which point I made some major life changing decisions because of it. It has certainly reshaped who I am as much as I have helped to shape it.

Maybe we should ask ourselves if we mod MW or if it's truly it that mod's us?

The sub-forum is still here. Its still packing it a handful of people. People still modding. Its not going anywhere anytime soon, from what I see.

i voted the 1st option.

As all made by man, even a well made community will die. I have seen die many things, especially in internet, and since time past, even fastily.

Also, the seek of power places and general consense in a community bring to various fights and breaking of relations: this thing happen in every human group, everytime someone want prevail, and not every time is the good guy.

i want specify that my words must be taken in a general sense, not are refferred to a specifical group because this is simply a philosophical matter, happening everywhere at every latitude and in every nation in the whole earth.

Also, because a free man with a great dose of egoism, gained by past experiences, i prefer see me as "a single man" that "a proud member of community XYZ": i can help, be nice, and laugh with people when needed but its a my own choice. I accept laws and obey them because justice must served, but i dont want be part of nothing.

Now coming back to Morrowind community, and the present ask:since the game was made many years ago, then, with time passing and years coming one's another, only "veterans" will remain, those that have a hard passion for this opera, and love it much (as me): the other will go forward, slowly waning as the time in the Third Era waned. Someday in the future will remain only a small number of hardened veterans that know each other from years, and after other years, this group will stop their forums to themselves and no other will be allowed to enter, like priest of a misteric religion: any other will see these remnants as something of strange reclusive people and will go forward to "the next super-game of the year". Generally, these communities have this end.

Maybe i will be pessimistic, but IMHO my own opinion about.

Im sure this has already been said, but no its not dead. Maybe for some people its no longer intresting. But for us creative types, its a great way to make something cool without a whole lot of work. The newer games take MUCH more effort to make stuff for.

As many have pointed out, this game is far from dead and new contents and tools are still released frequently. Personally, I am very excited to see what will happen when an open source engine for Morrowind gets finally released: the contact between the Elder Scrolls community and the open source community has the potential to be explosive.

completely ignoring every other post in this thread, here are my 2 cents.

Morrowind is the kind of game that attracts a dedicated fan base. It has depth, story, and at one point had enough wide appeal that even if its fan base slowly drops, it will remain active enough to regularly produce original content until the game can no longer be played without going to extraordinary measures. I don't consider this a death in the sense of the spirit of the choices.

This said though, I almost voted saying it was already dead simply because it reminded me of "Fist of the North Star." (おまえはもう死んでる)

I am one of two people in a religion that is very secretive. We've been around for millions of years, and even now, with only 2 people around, we are still alive.

However, I do not feel obliged to share anything more about my religion on this forum, and I know the forum rules about religion, so that's something else to consider.

With all due respect, SWG, but would you please care explain what is the point of this thread? It might seem hard to believe when you are 15, but death is the only certain thing in life... Fortune, love, fame, etc. may or may not come, but death will surely do - in ALL things (some game community included). You can keep something alive as much as you will, of course, keeping in mind that the time scales are always relative.

I did not vote and will not, until you explain clearly what is exactly the meaning of your question/poll. Do you want to see if it's still worth modding for it? You are still very young and you've joined the community for less than a year, so if you already got bored with it, well, probably it's not worth for you...

To be even more precise: as I can see, people keep joining the community all the time; modders keep releasing new stuff weekly; Connary's textures will turn MW graphics into a Phoenix re-birth - and the list can go on. Many here (including my humble self) have the time to enjoy all the above - and will probably do for many, many years. I honestly believe the MW community will outlast the OB community, for what's worth...

Cheers,
PKR.

might as well not count me on that list. I only come here to check TR threads, help people that I know I can help (which isn't much since I only know TR things), and post anime references in oddly serious threads.

I played Morrowind for years but I have to admit I was seduced by the lure of next gen gaming and left my copy of morrowind unused for the last four years... but slowly and surely I have become bored and decided to upload morrowind again. I was shocked to find how magical it all still felt and instantly I knew I was hooked again... Also I had figured the community had long since died off during the last fours years. How wrong could I have been... so much has happened over those years its unbelieveable. Infact it was seeing the good health of the community that made me decide that it was time I tried to start modding and contribute something to the game I love. So from the point of view from a noobie this community seems solid and more importantly everyone is friendly and eager to help.

nah, impossible. Noone live so long.

In Morrowind i can be very imaginative, but in reality im very realistic, and support the Sherlock Holmes say "discarding impossible what remain, also if improbable, must be the truth": never seen a man live thousand of years and i will never see in my life.

Sure is that in my future i will take my copy of Morrowind, all mods gained in years of patiently search, and in a way or another i will continue to "live" in my "second homeland", Vvardenfell and also in the unpleasant reality until death came to call me for the eternal journey to the celestial Balmora. Probably at this time this forum will be only a far memory into my mind, and a sense of thanking for have helped one to learn how mod.

may the Tribunal, like generous relatives forgive my sins, and not, as stern parents, punish me...

I don't think Morrowind or the MW community will *die*. It will just, in a distance future, vanish with dignity.

I'm interested to see the original Doom being brought up as an example why the Morrowind community will never die. Are we talking things like, for example, games using the Doom source code (Sonic Robo Blast 2)? If OpenMW ever gains momentum again (or if someone else finally creates a working and useful Open Source Morrowind engine ala Exult and Pentagram), then I'd love to see what people would come up with!

Equally, I don't think the Morrowind community is in ever danger of totally dying. It's part of the larger TES community, for a start, and that's never likely to die (in our lifetimes). So even if Morrowind modding as a separate community dies, there's still the overarching TES community.

Today it is still quite strong and it has been from release, sure it will die eventually, but we are talking many years from now, perhaps not even after Morrowind 2. :D
