The Morrowind Dead is Dead Thread

Post » Mon Nov 28, 2011 8:27 pm

Taken from the http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1242193-the-oblivion-dead-is-dead-thread/, I thought it would be fun to start one here and see if anyone has played or is planning on starting a 'Dead is Dead' character.

For those that don't know what it is, it's pretty self-explanatory though I'll explain anyways: Dead is Dead is a play-style wherein once your character dies, they've kicked the bucket for good. No reloading, you'll have to move on.

After all, even great heroes only live once.

Reloading any other time can be acceptable, such as if your save-game gets bugged, you die via a glitch, or you had a bad experience with installing a mod.

So basically, just post your DiD character's stats, current progress (Or also at the Where are you now? thread) and if it happens, how they died. If you want I could memorialize them in the OP post here, like at the Oblivion thread.

You're free to keep your character alive through any means (Barring console cheats like 'tgm', since that would defeat the point) so long as they aren't killed. Starting a fresh new character is recommended, and so is running a vanilla game (Though mods that don't impact the difficulty are fine) You're free to ignore this if you feel you are a good enough player to keep a character alive in a heavily modded and difficult game, of course.

So have fun, and remember, Dead is Dead!

Character Memorial

Now for an idea also taken from the Oblivion thread, here's the Morrowind Dead is Dead Graveyard, where characters that have died will be memorialized.

For future reference, try and give out more details such as where you were, how you died, and if you can remember, who or what killed you. If you don't want your character to be added here, let me know.

My uber mage died while wearing the mantle of woe. I thought it would be a good idea to take the khuul to ald-ruhn silt strider route at 3 in the mourning. The operator shoved my dead corpse off his strider at the port.

With the exception of my first character, I've always played like this. Probably the reason why I haven't finished the main quest yet.

I've only tried playing Iron Man a couple of times. Most of them, by the time my character died I had invested too much time and was enjoying the character too much so I said "[censored] it" and kept playing.

Yeah. I don't have the patience to start over every time I make a mistake. It can be fun though. And even though I don't play strictly Iron Man, I do try my hardest to avoid dying (i.e., I don't charge into a room that I know I could probably die in, I make sure I have a plan for staying alive beforehand) and play with high difficulty.

It's a DID Epidemic. What you want to bet it spreads into Skyrim.

Good job! Murandus :celebration:

Iron Man

Are you a Diablo player or is this more widely used?

I do play Diablo, yes. But I've seen the term iron man used many other places (including on these boards) to describe these play style.

I first thought it was about the Halo skull. One player dies: revert to last checkpoint (otherwise guys would just wait and respawn). Everybody dies: Level restart.

Ontopic: I tried to play a D=D character, only thing is that I spend more time hoarding money through alchemy and spending drakes on training, instead of just playing the game.

I always play max difficulty, no cheats, and of course, dead is dead. I don’t steal or kill NPC’s unless it is a quest goal (my characters are heroes). I also don’t use trainers or skill books. I just use each skill to improve it. I hone my combat skills against Bonelords, Dremora and Golden Saints, no “mudcrab academy”.

Kara the Redguard was a 71st level custom class (Spec.-Combat/Sign-The Lady/Favored attributes: Endurance & Luck/Majors: Heavy Armor, Block, Short Blade, Athletics & Marksman/Minors: Alchemy, Speechcraft, Enchant, Armorer & Mysticism). She had completed the MQ’s in Morrowind and Tribunal. She was head of the seven factions and House Hlaalu.

Kara was ripped to shreds by about a dozen werewolves.

Can't say I've ever played in this manner, nor that I'd want to. Especially considering all of my characters seem to enjoy jumping off of high places.

Edit: Or maybe that's just me.

I've tried playing D.I.D characters in the past, but after they died and forced me to make a new character, I didn't really feel like continuing playing at all because I'd have to do so many things over again, and ended up just uninstalling the game instead, heh. (I need a character with a semi-detailed background and somewhat fleshed out personality to have fun in Morrowind, anything else just feels pointless.)

I am too used to Baldur's Gate games, where saving and reloading repeatedly when faced with a tough opponent is often necessary if you don't know what you're going up against. (Ms. Blackhearted, I am looking at you.)

I always play max difficulty, no cheats, and of course, dead is dead. I don’t steal or kill NPC’s unless it is a quest goal (my characters are heroes). I also don’t use trainers or skill books. Kara was ripped to shreds by about a dozen werewolves.

Somehow, "ripped to shreds by werewolves" doesn't sound as cool and mysterious an end for the Nerevarine as "going on a vacation trip with Vivec to Akavir".

That's some serious dedication to the D.I.D concept though, I salute you.

Edit: Or maybe that's just me.

Once, I thought I'd be clever and escape my opponents by jumping into a nearby pond. I missed the pond by a pixel and died, smashed against a rock.

...I used to enjoy jumping of high places more before I installed a mod which increased fall damage.

I've never done a DID run, but I do like finality in my playthroughs. Like... in Oblivion, my horse dies and he's gone forever, no reloading. That kind of thing.

Would like to try a DID run, though :D Wish I still had Oblivion, would probably be a bit more fun in that game.

Another one bites the dust. Just lost the Barbarian I was playing with.

I'm definitely going to be more careful with the next play-through.

There you go! Get back on that ride! Good luck with the new char.

I don't normally quote myself, but this was taken form the Obl DID thread. To give my views on this type of playstyle, and why I plan to take it through Skyrim, as well as future Morrowind playthroughs.

As far as Skyrim...I plan to. Because it just adds to the excitement. Knowing that each enemy encounter could be your last. In Oblivion, you know where all the bad stuff is, and the great and epic goods. It's more exciting than your average replay, but playing DID totally blind, picturing yourself in the characters position, making those choices like YOU would make them, makes the RPG that much more exciting. I plan on making many, many, many playthroughs anyway. Starting another type of character, doing a completely different route, just increases the replay value of a game that is already very high. Only each time, it is truly a different experience, with different discoveries.

I will follow a certain questline of a given faction. If I don't make it, I'll follow another the next time. After several characters, I'll repeat the questline that I had previously failed. I have spent a lot of time, and a lot of ways, trying to play the game differently, trying to get that first high. The high I got from my first playthrough. The mistake I made then, was doing everything the game had to offer in one single playthrough with one single character. In a sense, it ruined the potential of every playthrough after that. I will not make that mistake with Skyrim.

Note: I think the Creatures of Morrowind or Tamriel Rebuilt mods messed with the stats of the Mudcrab; I was training my destruction when I got one-hit KO'd from a mudcrab. I kinda laughed, but I mostly cried.

Bit of a sick joke.

I tried to do this recently of my own accord, but unfortunately, the aptly named Htograf (who bore an uncanny resemblance to a certain Wood Elf) died by falling off the Seyda Neen lighthouse. After killing everyone in Seyda Neen.

At least he was able to eliminate his doppelganger before he died.

I would like to announce, that due to the growing interest in this type of platstyle, a http://graveyard.wikia.com/wiki/The_Graveyard_-_A_Dead_Is_Dead_gamplay_site_Wiki wiki, currently under construction. It is not completely up yet. Soon you will be able to list your characters with pics, bios and the like. Featuring listings in a lot of different games.

This is being created to expand our fallen characters, NOT replace the threads of the forums.

Sweet! The only problem I have with your site is that the whole point of this style of play is to not end up on your site. If you think the game is too easy, then try not cheating, not consoling and not doing all the little things people do to get by in the game. Take one character on max difficulty all the way through all MQ’s and as many side quests as you can without dying…ever. I almost made it with Kara and I’m doing fine with her replacement Scarlet (who will never grace your site).
