The Most Controversial Lore

Post » Thu Jan 13, 2011 8:43 pm

I am curious as to what everyone's favourite piece of TES Lore is, what is the most controversial to them, what interests them the most. Yes, I put "Most Controversial Lore" as the title, but that is because, to me, the "favourite, most interesting, controversial" is all the same to me, in some manners.

So, I have asked, well, stated, my goal, and that is to know what lore intrigues you the most.

But I don't want you to stop there, by all means, please, tell me why and what parts of it excite you the most, that really get you going. What made you like it in the first place? What was it about the piece of lore? When'd you first experience it? How long have you been into it?

I want to know... Your Lore "Story." (Or testimony, in some cases.)

The early days of the human-controlled Cyrodiil and the rise of the Imperials from slave status, including Alessia, Morihaus, Pelinal Whitestrake, the Ayleids/Ayleid empire, etc., is my favorite part of lore. I've loved it since late 2008. It's just cool, in my opinion, and Pelinal Whitestrake is just cool, as well. His being the Shezarrine and the whole switching between periods of lucidity and homicidal madness fascinates me. On one side, the human side, you have this cultural god-hero who is considered a savior of man in Cyrodiil but on the other side, the Mer side, you have this homical maniac who murders Mer in a rage and is despised. Imperials rising from slavery to the conquerors of Tamriel is just fascinating to me, as well. I like the Imperials.

That to travel quickly in Argonia you get endocytosis-ed by a massive bacteria, and break the cell membrane at your stop.

Marukh, the Marukhati Selectives, and the Dragon Break. It's one of the most confusing things in TES, in my opinion. Because it's so odd and hard to truly understand, it's infinitely intriguing to me. Those topics give me a reason to keep rereading the TES lore and posting on these forums.

CHIM and (closely) related subjects, which also look to be the centerpiece of it all.

After playing Oblivion, one of my first questions was "Where does vampirism come from" and when I knew I was like "...heavy".

I hope the next TES goes for a more darker style.

Lorkhan. He played a huge role in the backstory of Morrowind and Oblivion, but he's such a mysterious entity, he's just about never discussed in dialogue, despite recieving almost all credit for creating Mundus.

The people stuff. Even if the people are gods. For example, I don't care nearly as much about the divinity or humanity (elf-dom?) of Vivec as I care about why he did what he did, what in his life led to his choices. The wars. The truces. The fueds, the alliances, the loves, the hatreds.

If you're referring to in-universe, depends what culture you are asking. Pre-Morrowind, the Dunmer would have claimed it being the 'false claims' of Vivec murdering Nerevar and the Tribunal rising to power using Kagrenac's Tools.

Imperials probably wouldn't think that highly of the Arcturian Heresy and Wulfharth deal.

Other cultures have their own things. We just don't know as much about them as we do those two (so I can't speculate, but others can).

I love everything from 2920. Mostly the part about the witch coven and summoning Daedra. I like all the lore on magic, but summoning really intrigues me. Witch covens sound so interesting. I would love to join one in Daggerfall sometime.

Well, it's not so much that he's the Prince of Madness so much as he is the Prince of Order, or was it biscuits? No, no, it is definitely the Prince of Order. Anyway, it's not so much that he is the Prince of Madness so much as he is the Prince of Order gone mad.

Also apparently of cycles.

I happen to be fascinated by numbers and what fits where and what doesn't. It's a nice convenient way of boiling down the great cosmic play. There's the One, Nirn, the Serpent, Lorkhan to some extent; then you've got the Two, the Enantiomorph, Anu and Padomay; next comes the Three, Warrior, Mage, Thief; then there's the Four, Four Fours number the Daedra; finally comes the Five, the Dark Brotherhood. The most important numbers in this, of course, are two and three. Everything seems to come in those numbers. What doesn't is an exception and therefore unique in this wold.

I'm also quite fond of World-building, the small touches that turn TES into a breathing world. And I love extrapolating to those touches.

I think because I hold a pretty elvish conception of metaphysics and want to see their view on him, but I controversially don't accept the Aldudagga's interpretation of my favorite Daedric Prince.

The Dark Brotherhood, Morag Tong and Sithis. Really hard, but really fun to read about. But the MOST fascinating piece of lore for me are the Akaviri. I want to be a monkeah man!

Probably the Battle of Red Mountain. The event was so obscure, and the uncertainty around it fascinates me. I still don't believe Vivec when he says that the Tribunal did not murder Nerevar.

I'm a fan of Vivec's lore. Pretty trippy stuff there, once you get into it.

As you shouldn't, because http://www.imperial-library.info/content/thirty-six-lessons-obscurity-and-deception. See the "Secret of the Lessons" section. Or see for yourself.

Favorite piece of lore? The entirety of the Dark Brotherhood and the Morag Tong. Good times.

Most controversial? The REAL Barenziah, Part IV (Daggerfall edition -- oh dear...)

What interests me most? The Argonian lore, perhaps. There's nothing really known about them -- the mystery is what interests me.

What I like the most and find very intruiging in the Elder Scrolls universe? Vampirism and Lycanthropy, Werewolves and Vampires. Been a fan of them before the Elder Scrolls. When I played the Elder Scrolls, I was amazed with the free-roaming, but what caught my attention and made me hooked forever..was the ability to be a Werewolf in Elder Scrolls III and a vampire. Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion as well. Ever since ive been bookworking in-game vampire books and been a fan of the Cyrodiilic vampire clan based on the lore and characters in the game. Been a huge fan of Hircine and his Hounds as well! Favorite guild? Gotta be the Crimson Scars....

Have you read the Infernal City? It's got a fun little thing with Hircine in it. [/shameless plug]

I second this so hard. I love the huge cast of characters in ES lore that are just begging to be examined more closely. The royal families of the Iliac Bay are like crack to me. I also love the less-seen side of the Blades - that is, the proper spy network that the likes of Lady Brisienna worked for. There's a tantalising hint in the Daggerfall Chronicles about Brisienna being away working undercover with the witches of Popudax - what on earth was she doing there, and to what end? It makes my pen-hand get itchy, I have to say...

I don't know, all the lore interests me except for maybe Indoril and Dres lore.
Umm, CHIM is a huge mystery to me, as I struggle to understand how you attain it,
Also, the trial of Nerevar, and what really happened between the Tribunal that day
