The most frustrating aspect of every Elder Scrolls game to d

Post » Thu May 03, 2012 2:10 pm

So I just finished helping Ulfric win the revolution, I've already been named stormblade and given officer armor, then I travel back to Whiterun to check in, talk to the new Jarl (who I helped put in position), who names me Thane, and then I walk outside, and what's the first thing I hear by 1 of the new stormcloak guards I helped put in position, whom I'm supposedly an officer over?

"hands to yourself sneak thief".

But its not just that isolated instance, its like that with every aspect of dialog in every town, no matter if you've been named thane, you're the dragonborn, you're the arch-mage, etc, none of it matters.
I get named the arch-mage and the idiot court wizard keeps telling me every time I see him that "if I've got the apptitude I should join the mage's college". etc, etc, etc.

That right there has been the biggest annoyance, most assinine thing that each and every Elder Scrolls game has also suffered from. The lack of intelligent dialog. It ruins immersion into the game, its horrible.

My first post on the forum, and I registered here specifically to voice this irritation.

Agreed, although I wouldn't go so far as to say that it ruins the game like you seem to think. It's one of my only criticisms of Skyrim - your titles don't mean much. Still, guards do often say 'You're that one from the college! Heard things have finally settled down.' and 'You have vanquished a great evil from this land'. At least that's a start!

I've never heard that (currently lvl 55 and have been arch-mage since the 20's or 30's), and I said it ruins immersion in the game and is the biggest annoyance (although Skyrim's UI runs a close 2nd).

My favorite one: I am covered head-to-toe in dragon bones, I just slayed the World-Eater, and what do I hear? "Maybe I'm the Dragonborn, I just don't know it yet," You're damn right you don't and you never will, I proceeded to slice that guard's head off with my Daedric Greatsword. It's okay, though, I'm in the Thieves' Guild XD

Farengar's urging you to join the College is actually a bug; the dialogue conditions aren't set up correctly. If you are in the College, he should say "Remember, your mind is the best weapon you have."

I know, right. Even in morrowind, the house gaurds would recognise your faction standing, and say things like 'hail spellwright of house telvanni' etc.

Agreed.
I dont think I have played a game in ten years where the dialogue irritates me that much as Skyrim's does.
Its not the actual dialogue itself, its he repetition.
Its the fact that you only need level 30 in a skill for guards to make random comments.
Its: I work for Belethor at the general goods store.

The weakest point of the game by far, as the annoyance factor does keep you from playing in the end.

Having in mind that the latest Oblivion Patch (unofficial) is of 2 December 2011, I think there's still a LOOOOONG time until all those small bugs of the game are all ironed out... :(

And yes, they've been patching the game non-stop for 5 years straight (first upload was of 2 July 2006).

Here is one I hate after completing the civil war quest. I go to solitude to check out how things are coming along, and go to the blue palace to see what I can do for the town... and to see if I can still get that house.

Halfway through the main chamber and red dots appear everywhere... The ex-jarl of Whiterun and his bodyguards are on the lower level. Of course now ALL the guards are stormcloaks so they all attack him. And of course he can not die so I am worried everytime I go in there he is going to kill someone who can die, and getting around to talk to people when there is a giant fight going on is really irritating. The good news; he svckS in combat so the guards always take him down. His female dunmer bodyguard on the other hand can be a hassle.

Fixing the dialogues according to your faction standing would be a wonderful thing for many of us.

Don't see it happening though. They should've known this. I have no idea how hard or easy it is to code this, but I did expect them to adapt the conversational dialogues to what happened/who you are.

The lack of recognition alwys bugged me. When you run the companions, you should be able to take any one of them as a companion. Likewise the guards should think twice about lipping off at you when you're the harbinger.

I was thinking of this just the other day. It really does svck but i think it's because you can only program so much into the ai and the world around them or because Bethesda is lazy.
Im the harbinger of the companions and the idiotic guards would always say "Hey aren't you that new member of the companions? So what do you fetch the mead?".

They do that!
For some reason proximity is enough for them to follow you like they are glued to your behind in and out of buildings.
Just to deliver their one irritating line of inane dialogue.

You get the feeling Bethesda is trolling you, they are not, but wow its so annoying.

SOOOOOO TRUE!!!!! It annoys me just as much and I'm really frustrated every time this isn't mentioned in the patchnotes... Why doesn't Bethesda get this... Oblivion had exactly the same problem!

Mostly this for me, you can get skills accidentaly that high. In Oblivion it was around 70 for skills and attributes, which seemed pretty good. Must be accidental though, there's no way that could be an intended feature.

...Then again, when one at looks at the UI...

It wouldn't even have to be a dramatic change. When you were somebody important the guards would say nothing to. They would stand at respectful attention like a proper guard should. If you Spoke to them they would only respond with " yes my thane" or some such thing. ". But a guard asking the arch Mage to conjur him up a nice warm bed ?

For me, I find the overall bugginess of the Elder Scrolls games, and how Bethesda can take months to address them, if at all, to be more annoying than simple guard comments.

As for npc comments, I hate how everyone in the area has to make a comment when I'm in the area. There have been a few instances where I'm speaking to a quest npc and I miss the conversation because every nearby npc has to interrupt (ex. my Nord's initiation to the Companions). Sure, this doesn't break the quest, but I still would like to hear the intended conversation. Skyrim npcs are way too chatty and it would be nice if they just spoke when spoken to, or only spoke amongst themselves.

If you are wariror, and u use ilusion spell just one time to try it out and your skill raised, guards will always say Your the one casting those illusions.Bethesda who the hell wanted this? GOOD DAY > KNEES FILLED WITH ARROWS

I'm more concerned with the fact that you can't have any form of interactive conversation with the guards or most npcs. Continued over, the conversations you can have are terribly brisk.
