The Mother of all Theories

Post » Sat Nov 28, 2015 5:56 am

The following is a somewhat unique set of predictions, which I strongly recommend reading through until the end. There is information here that you won't want to miss! Below, I have described a very specific event, from a perspective we have not yet seen, set around three weeks before the tutorial. Although this event will not likely be seen during gameplay, it actually reveals a wealth of information. After the description, I have provided a full explanation as to the contents, including a number of general observations, as well as several brand new details. Be warned, there are at least TWO very big reveals in this thread, including the location of a major DLC. Due to the volume of information below, I recommend opening one spoiler tab at a time. Finally, note that everything you are about to read is actually derived from the E3 footage, and various other verified sources.
And so, in keeping with the storytelling aspects of Fallout 4, I ask you all to consider the following scene:
Nora checked her son one more time, making sure he wasn't too cold. Twenty-three days had passed since the birth, and she was still not entirely comfortable with the idea of leaving Shaun alone, even if he was only in the next room. She reluctantly went back to the kitchen and continued unpacking. This place was a world away from the city, and there had already been one minor concern upon arrival, a problem with the heating system. But she had booked somebody for Wednesday morning to come and fix it, and had already marked it on the calendar. Winter was coming, and she couldn't afford to take any more chances. Having Jack still at home was an absolute godsend, especially given the current global tension, and more so considering what today meant to all of them. She picked the calendar up from the kitchen worktop and carefully pressed it in place onto the side of the refrigerator. As she did, she glanced at the words she had written above today's date, Monday October 4th, moving day.
The real-estate contact had made sure everything had gone as smoothly as possible, but there was something about the company who owned the land that didn't quite feel right. Apart from the calendar itself and a few references on paper, she had heard their name before, but neither her nor Jack seemed to know that much about them. Maybe she was worrying about nothing, in fact they were probably just something to do with the Corps. She looked out of the window, and wondered what the neighbors here would be like. She planned on meeting a few of them the following day, perhaps some of them were also ex-military, given what little they did know about the site. After drawing the curtains closed, she read the message across the middle of the calendar once again. "Don't forget to sign up and secure your future" "Be safe! 1-888-4-VAULTTEC". The message made her feel a little uneasy. Perhaps she should give them a call in the morning.
They had moved here to make a fresh start, after Jack had almost been killed during active service all those months ago. But her husband was also a war hero, and had saved many lives whilst risking his own. His recovery had gone better than expected. And in spite of the minor issue with the heating, and this being their first day here, Sanctuary Hills felt safe. It was a lot quieter than their city home by the riverside, so much so that she could barely hear a sound outside of the house. In less than three weeks, Jack would be giving the keynote speech for an important meeting at the Veteran's Hall downtown. Even here, it was hard to fully escape the effects of the war, but she was proud of him, and that's what mattered. In fact, he had been working hard on his speech, and had fallen asleep still clutching his open notebook. Next to Jack, still sealed in it's box, was a brand new 'Mr Handy' house-robot. Another welcome addition to the family. And yet even now, she questioned whether or not they had made the right choice.
In some ways, it was a comfort being so close to Boston after all these years. And as she thought of the city they had left behind and the hospital where Shaun had been born, it now all seemed so far away. What Nora did not know was that the few hours it took them to drive here would soon seem like an impossible distance, and only one of them would ever be returning to the old city. And far more tragic, on the day of the veteran's meeting, her world would be turned upside down forever. A sequence of events, beginning with a stray submarine wandering into hostile territory, would trigger the near destruction of the human race. And in a bizarre twist of fate, the actions of one individual almost two-hundred years from now would alter the destiny of two seemingly unrelated families, including her own. But for now at least, they were safe from harm, sheltered from the immediate impact of the ongoing global conflict. But sadly, not even the bond between a mother and her child can escape the hand of fate. Because war... war never changes.
Now before any of you think I have had one too many Nuka-Cola Quantums, I offer a full explanation below. But as always, BEWARE SPOILERS!
PARAGRAPH 1:
Spoiler
  • Nora's close bond with her son will likely be central to the main story, regardless of who we choose to play as. There are obvious parallels between being in a vault, and a child being carried in the womb. Note that if we choose a male protagonist, then Nora will once again literally be 'carrying' Shaun, this time inside a cryogenic pod. This also ties in with the reference to him perhaps being too cold due to the problem with the heating.
  • Twenty-three days before October 4th would actually be September 11th, which holds obvious significance for many people. There is in fact another important historical connection to this date which will be explained below. Note that this date would also make Shaun exactly six-weeks old during the tutorial, which matches the way he looks and responds in the scene in the bedroom. This is also the age at which he would start to recognise his parents, which I believe is crucial to the main story.
  • The 'next room' as mentioned here is also a reference to being in the next pod, if we choose to play as a female. In this instance, Shaun would be sharing a pod with his father. This scenario would not seem very likely if there were any significant amount of time to decide who takes Shaun with them. In fact, this would actually suggest that they had next to no time to decide, and instead had to react very quickly. In this situation, whoever carried Shaun into the vault would also end up taking him with them into one of the pods, thus inadvertently sealing their own fate. The protagonist would then take the next pod.
  • Nora's reluctance to do anything other than spend time with her son would be very likely given the unfolding conflict in the pre-war world, although there may also be another reason. This is mirrored by the fact that she would eventually lose contact with him in a hostile and unfamiliar wasteland. She would also literally be a 'world away' from the city, and from everything she knew, considering almost everywhere would have to be reached on foot. Note that this would result from her having either left the vault as the protagonist, or escaping from the Institute as the spouse (see http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1524886-the-institute for further speculation on the Institute).
  • The family being new to the house can be confirmed by the protagonist's reaction to the Vault-Tec rep during the demo. If they had already been living on the site whilst the vault was being built, they would most likely have known who Vault-Tec actually were. Note that the noise and dust from the construction of the vault is not something you would want a newborn baby to be around. Also, October 4th has been circled on the calendar as seen http://i.imgur.com/0nbPhJ8.jpg. Once again, there is an important historical significance connected to this date that will be explained below.
  • The HVAC system (Heating, Ventilation and Air-Conditioning) has not been working properly, as seen in http://i.imgur.com/cK2bhEy.png image (this, and the image below showing the certificate, both courtesy of lunamoonraker) There is a note about this on the refrigerator, as well as a panel that has been removed in the utility room. This issue is most likely related to Vault 111. In THIS thread, I proposed that the vault requires an extreme high pressure environment in order for the cryo tech to function properly. The HVAC system, which is allegedly affected at least twice, is probably malfunctioning due to environmental testing inside the vault.
  • With regards to the appointment to fix the heating, Wednesday October 6th has also been circled on the calendar. The historical significance of this date, as with the others already mentioned, will be explained below. Note here that many everyday luxuries, such as having a repair man who is able to fix the heating, would cease to exist after the Great War. From what we have seen however, Fallout 4 does seem to be highly 'progressive' with the inclusion of power generators and other functional devices.
  • The reference to the coming of 'Winter' is due to it already being October, and so the temperature would start to drop as time went on. This reference would also signify a 'bleak future' and difficult times ahead, as well as the inevitable nuclear winter that would follow the Great War, and of course the unfathomable amount of time that they would be spending in 'deep freeze' inside the vault. Note also that I mentioned Nora not wanting to take any more chances. This suggests that something happened that almost resulted in her losing her child.
  • Jack appears to be a fully capable and healthy advlt male, and yet he is not actively serving in the war. This means that he must have a good reason not to be fighting. The most likely explanation is that he was injured in the line of duty and was given honorable discharge due to his courageous actions. This would also explain the flag case on the shelf near the front door of the house.
  • Nora is currently caring for a young baby, and so would also be excluded from active service. Note http://i.imgur.com/mSXW7Lz.png certificate, seen next to the flag case, suggesting a background in law. My own theory is that after graduating in Boston, she joined the US Navy in 'another' significant city. But instead of legal services, she ends up working in logistics. This could explain how the couple met. Note that Jack also seems to have a connection with Boston, perhaps also in his earlier life.
  • Regarding the use of the word 'godsend' to describe Jack in this paragraph, note that his name, as well as that of his son, literally means "gift from God", whilst Nora means "Light" or "Hope". All three names have an Irish origin, which fits with the historical Boston setting. For more information on the default names for the individual family members, as well as their in-game significance, see http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1527024-jack-and-nora thread.
PARAGRAPH 2:
Spoiler
  • Vault-Tec as a company are most certainly not to be trusted. Although they present themselves as providing an essential service to the American people through the construction of secure vaults, their true nature is in fact far more sinister. Contracted by the US Government at a total cost of over six-hundred billion dollars (bearing in mind the huge level of inflation at the time), Vault-Tec's real purpose was to carry out a number of highly unethical experiments unique to specific vaults. Note than there were around 123 vaults in total including the previously undisclosed Vault 111, but only a select number were ever used for experimentation. These experiments were often significantly worse than the nuclear devastation from which they were supposed to provide refuge. One of these experiments, in an as yet unidentified vault, may well have involved the Vault-Tec employee we see in the demo.
  • With regards to Vault 111, and the 'specialist requirements' of it's inhabitants, there are actually many real-estate companies that would be considered as being military friendly. One such company would likely have been hired in order to manage the sale of properties to very specific military clients as chosen exclusively by Vault-Tec. Any property on the site would only have been made available for sale once the vault was completed, as before this time the entire site would likely have been designated as classified due to the highly sensitive and unique nature of the tech involved.
  • The proximity of Sanctuary Hills to Vault 111 suggests that they are in fact part of the same site. This would mean that Vault-Tec would own the land on which Sanctuary Hills is built. This is actually very significant, as the footage we have seen so far seems to be 'cut' in specific places to conceal this fact, which would suggest that it is highly important to the story. Interestingly, this could even mean that when we are later given the opportunity to rebuild Sanctuary Hills as seen in the demo, the vault may actually have a role to play in terms of secure storage, or perhaps even some other use.
  • The phrase 'didn't quite feel right' as used to describe Nora's hesitations about Vault-Tec, may actually be relevant to gameplay. Looking at one of the new descriptions for our primary stats, we are told that: 'Perception is your environmental awareness and "sixth sense," and affects weapon accuracy in V.A.T.S.' This mention of 'sixth sense' could possibly allow us to pre-empt certain situations in ways not previously available in the series. This could result in something similar to the 'detect life' effect in Skyrim, which would act as a visual threat sense.
  • The experiment in Vault 111 would almost certainly be connected to the military background of our protagonist couple. Also, the presence of heavily armed soldiers in and around Sanctuary Hills would further suggests that this is a site that has been specifically designed for non-active or retired military personnel. All indications so far point to the experiment being based around cryogenic preservation, and this would explain how the Sole Survivor ends up being alive and well some 200 or so years after the bombs fell.
  • The people we see above Vault 111 in the demo are almost certainly other new residents of Sanctuary Hills and therefore either military or ex-military. They would in fact be the same neighbors that Nora was wondering about, and would have all been 'recruited' by Vault-Tec. The experiment, as mentioned above, would have required a certain 'calibre' of individuals to be preserved in cryogenic stasis, possibly in order to help repopulate after the outbreak of nuclear war. This could be achieved either directly or through their DNA, which would also be preserved. The inclusion of the protagonist's family would meet an additional requirement of a newborn or very young baby, in order to measure the cryo tech's ability to halt the ageing process.
  • The reference in this paragraph to the Corps, namely the US Marine Corps, ties in with their 240th anniversary, which is actually the same day that Fallout 4 will be released. For this and one other very important reason as explained below, I can confidently state that our male protagonist is a former Marine.
  • The Vault-Tec message I have quoted above is exactly the same one shown on the calendar seen in the kitchen. This is a real telephone number, as seen http://www.gamezone.com/news/fallout-4-yes-vault-tec-s-phone-number-still-works-3417257, and features a pre-recorded message.
PARAGRAPH 3:
Spoiler
  • The reference to a 'fresh start' is highly relevant to the in-game footage. We can see food being planted by our protagonist, a first in the Fallout universe, as well as stand pipes, which may well be for fresh underground water. Also, the rivers, lakes and coastline areas of the Commonwealth, as seen in the demo, appear to be surprisingly clear. This could well signify the expansion of Project Purity, as well as Madison Li's ability to grow fresh fruit and vegetables, being brought to this area. After the purifier is activated during Fallout 3's main quest, we are told that Li travels North to the commonwealth to pursue 'other scientific purposes'. This suggests that she may well end up playing a major role in Fallout 4.
  • For obvious reasons, it is most likely that Jack was injured after Shaun was conceived, which would have been around the end of December 2076. This means that his injuries would have occurred in early 2077. This event would have had a huge impact on Nora, who would have been in the first trimester of pregnancy. This could have caused a number of complications, resulting in her almost losing Shaun prior to, or even during the birth. Note that this gives even more weight to her describing Jack and Shaun as being "the two most important men in my life" during the tutorial.
  • Jack's role as a possible protagonist would suggest that he would have been fairly heroic during the time that he actively served as a Marine. Also, given his ability to acquire followers, as well as win favor of various factions during gameplay, he would more than likely have had a significant number of soldiers under his command. Again, referring to gameplay, he would likely heal from serious injuries a little faster than would be expected from a 'lesser' character, especially due to how quickly in-game health can be recovered. Note that the injuries themselves would show vulnerability, whereas the deeds that led to them, as well as the recovery, would signify courage and leadership. This seems like it would be very important to the situations we will face during the main quest, if we choose to play as a male character.
  • It would be expected that at least some of the above characteristics would also be present with a female protagonist. This suggests that Nora would, at the very least, have had a certain amount of combat training during her own time in the military. This could have been experience outside of the US Navy, or perhaps would mean that she was trained up as a reserve. This would make sense given the state of the pre-war world, as large numbers of combat ready individuals would be required should the situation escalate. Also, Nora would need to know how to use weapons, and possibly even Power Armor, at the start of post-war gameplay.
  • The 'safe feeling' nature of Sanctuary Hills, as well as the name itself, is clearly no accident. The importance to Vault-Tec of being able to attract suitable test subjects cannot be stressed enough. Without test subjects, there is no experiment. Also, note the contrast between a 'city home by the riverside' and the secluded location they now find themselves in. This is another way that Vault-Tec would have enticed suitable candidates to the Sanctuary Hills site, even down to the lack of background noise outside of the house. Add to this the convenient placement of the vault, and you can see why they would have gone to so much effort.
  • Jack must have held a relatively senior rank in the Marine Corps due to his being selected to deliver the keynote speech. Note that at the start of the tutorial, Nora says "You're gonna knock em dead at the Veteran's Hall tonight hun" before we have had a chance to select who we will play as. Note also that, even if we were to just click straight away on the option to play as the default male protagonist, the menu itself does not appear until after Nora says "Now get ready and stop hogging the mirror", to which Jack responds with "Right". During the full tutorial, it is almost a given that we will see Jack practising his speech, either as the protagonist or as the spouse. The actual speech being read would likely be the same, or at least very similar to https://web.archive.org/web/20150602183647im_/http://i.kinja-img.com/gawker-media/image/upload/s--TDzk0L79--/c_fit,fl_progressive,q_80,w_636/1993h06hw9hg8png.png document, leaked to Kotaku at the end of 2013.
  • Ironically, the forthcoming meeting at the Veteran's Hall would actually counter the above mentioned efforts of Vault-Tec to distract our couple from the reality of war. Although in some ways, this would actually help strengthen the idea that as long as they were here (as in Sanctuary Hills), they were in a safe place. Also, the strong connection between our couple, as well as the connection to their child, can be seen clearly during the tutorial. This is very important in terms of the overall story, as it allows us to be far more invested in the protagonist's family members as he or she goes about searching for them and completing other objectives during gameplay.
  • The notebook that Jack is holding while he sleeps is very significant. At some point during the main quest, once the spouse has managed to escape from the Institute, they will need to find some way of contacting the protagonist. After triggering a system failure in the vault and thus waking them from cryo sleep, a discreet message will need to be delivered. Something that is highly significant to both of them, but that others would not recognise. It is my belief that after Jack practices reading his speech, whoever is not the protagonist will end up with the copy of the speech in their pocket for safekeeping (Note that Nora is actually the only female above the vault who is wearing trousers, and therefore the only female with pockets!) This speech will then be with the spouse as they 'sleep' inside the vault. At some later point, the speech will be delivered to the protagonist as a coded message, instructing them to go to the Veteran's Hall.
  • It is very likely that Codsworth was provided with the house as a 'bonus', courtesy of Vault-Tec, or possibly even the real-estate company. We can actually see the box in the utility room, just as our couple exit the bathroom. Codsworth is also very much a member of the family, as seen during the tutorial. Note that he is also a potential follower, enabling him quite literally to remain 'by our protagonist's side' during the story. Note also that somebody appears to have repaired Codsworth when we first meet him post-war. It is possible that this could have been the individual or group who are helping our spouse to remain hidden from the Institute.
  • Finally, the choice that I refer to at the end of the paragraph is actually three separate choices. Firstly, the idea of bringing a child into a world on the brink of war. Secondly, the question of whether they should have moved. And thirdly, whether they should have moved to Sanctuary Hills, which may seem a little 'too good to be true'.
PARAGRAPH 4:
Spoiler
  • As previously stated, Nora seems to have a strong connection to Boston, as evidenced by the law certificate mentioned earlier, as well as the many pictures of Boston lighthouses shown in the player home during the tutorial. It is also likely that Jack had previously spent some time living or even studying here. Note that in the footage, he says "Welcome home" and "It's good to be back". However, there is actually evidence to suggest that he was originally from another city.
  • The city they left behind, and the hospital where Shaun had been born. Wait... What? Now we're getting somewhere. As I have hinted above, this city, a few short hours drive from Boston, will almost certainly be the location of a potentially huge DLC, to which the protagonist will be returning. Before I reveal further details, we have a few more things to cover.
  • The day of the meeting is of course Saturday October 23rd, the same day as the Great War, during which most of the human race is destroyed. Also, the submarine to which I refer is the giant Chinese Sub seen in concept art and discussed in http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1526246-the-glowing-sea thread, which also explains in full detail the nature and origin of the Glowing Sea.
  • Next, I have mentioned a 'mysterious' individual who is connected to our protagonist's family in some elaborate way. This individual will be very significant in the main quest, and will prove to be a highly dangerous and cunning opponent. Who knows, they may even be somebody we have already met. I shall reveal the identity of this not so mysterious individual in the next section.
  • The reference to the family being 'safe from harm' and 'sheltered' whilst in Sanctuary Hills is another indication of how Vault-Tec are pre-empting them for their time in the vault. It is ironic then, that Jack, Nora, and Shaun will actually be the last remaining survivors from the few who actually managed to make it inside. Also, note that Nora's bond with her son will be forever changed as a result of the outbreak of nuclear war, and even though I believe that all three family members survive, they will each end up on a very different path.
  • War never changes, the tagline for the entire series. In this case, I refer to a war from a long forgotten past that will play out once again in a different time, and with very different players. This is in fact a war that starts immediately after we complete a recent journey in the Fallout universe.
  • Below are two final sections that cover some VERY BIG spoilers.
FAMILY TIES:
Spoiler
  • Just to clarify, the mysterious individual I mentioned above is almost certainly not the one you were all thinking of. The person I am talking about here is none other than Madison Li. Although there are one or two reddit threads that have been circulating for a while regarding Dr Li, I have found some new and very compelling evidence that not only points in a different direction to what has been suggested, but also solidifies the idea of her being a potentially very dangerous antagonist. But first, a little bit of theory.
  • Just after the Lone Wanderer was born in Jefferson Memorial, James' wife Catherine died of cardiac arrest. All of a sudden, Project Purity came to a grinding halt. James took his child to live in Vault 101, and Li moved on to Rivet City, where she very quickly established herself as the head of Science. Much later, when Project Purity was back in action, Li manages somehow to reactivate Liberty Prime, in spite of her being a 'hydroponics specialist'. The Enclave are all but wiped out, but not before crippling Prime using an orbital strike. Prime then activates it's built in self-destruct protocol. Later, Li makes her way North to the Commonwealth.
  • Firstly, Catherine was a fellow scientist. I'm guessing that she knew something that Madison Li did not want to be made public. Something of her origins. Li saw the opportunity of the Lone Wanderer's birth as being a plausible cover for Catherine's death, and so she administered a lethal dose of non-traceable toxin into her bloodstream. Next, she persuades James that he is no longer safe in the wastelands, and so James takes his child into the vault, where Li can monitor both of them until they are required at a later date.
  • Using Rivet City as a cover, she eventually figures out everything she needs to know for the next phase of her plan. Once this has happened, she 'breaks James out' of vault 101 by initiating the events we see at the beginning of Fallout 3's tutorial. James has no choice but to leave, and shortly afterwards, the Lone Wander is hot on his trail. Li eventually sends the Lone Wanderer into the second most irradiated location on the East Coast to retrieve the GECK, the key to the success of Project Purity. Once the Enclave have been dealt with, Project Purity is successfully implemented, and Li makes her way to the Commonwealth. But before she does this, she reverse engineers the technology incorporated into the GECK, so she can build a larger, far more powerful equivalent.
  • And now for the big twist. If we were to go back and witness the birth of the Lone Wander from Madison Li's perspective, and perhaps backtrack an hour or two before the event, I believe we would be in for something of a shock regarding the not-so-good doctor. On the morning of July 13th 2258, it is my belief that Madison Li sent an encrypted communication to initiate a highly dangerous recovery mission hundreds of miles away. The cargo, something far more valuable than even the GECK, was a six week old child, frozen in stasis, with near perfect pre-war DNA.
  • Now move back to 'present day' and Madison Li arriving at the Commonwealth. Li travels straight to her home and birthplace, buried deep below the streets of Central Boston, the highly secretive location known as the Institute. Once there, she sets to work recreating the revised GECK. She also takes over the 'training' of her new recruit, who has by now reached his second decade. The old synthetic production line, outdated and left as scrap, has been causing something of a problem in the Commonwealth. The people are calling it an uprising, a revolution. But the real revolution is yet to come. The DNA of the child has been replicated many times over, but in order to finish the project, a suitable power source is required.
  • Once the revised GECK has been completed a few short months from now, the single most irradiated area on the East Coast, the area formerly known as Boston Harbor, now dubbed 'the Glowing Sea', will be accessible for the very first time since the Great War. And buried in a trench along the sea-bed, inside an old rusted submarine, is a cluster of live nuclear reactors, the final ingredient required by the Institute for their rise to power. An army will soon be unleashed onto the streets of the Commonwealth. Leading this army will be a genetically enhanced super-soldier. A human, who has always believed himself to be artificial, who has been trained his entire life to become the perfect killing machine. His name is Shaun. And the army he will be leading is like none seen before. Highly advanced synthetics, every one of them infused with his own DNA. And so in a very real way, Shaun is their father. And Madison Li, who designed the very first prototype all those years ago, is their mother.
THE OLD CITY:
Spoiler
Still not convinced that Madison Li is connected to both in-game families? Keep reading. But first, it's time for our second big reveal. BE WARNED THAT THIS IS POTENTIALLY HUGE!
Spoiler
The city I have repeatedly referred to above, the former home of the protagonist and their family, as well as the location of a major DLC is:
Spoiler
http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Philadelphia, also known as 'The Old City'
Here are a number of facts tying Philadelphia to the events of Fallout 4:
  • First, the dates mentioned above. During the https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Philadelphia_campaign of the American Revolutionary War, there were two prominent battles led by https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Howe,_5th_Viscount_Howe on the British side, and no less than https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Washington on the American side. The two battles in question were the https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Brandywine on September 11th 1777, and then the https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Germantown on October 4th 1777. Both of these dates are exactly 300 years prior to the dates I have proposed for Shaun's date of birth, and the date of the family moving to Sanctuary Hills, the second of which just happens to be marked on the calendar seen in the kitchen during the tutorial. Both of these Battles are considered pivotal points in the campaign, both were led by the same two men, both were won by the invading British troops, and if we look at their respective locations, we can see a North-Eastern progression along the East Coast, exactly the same as our protagonist's family when moving from Philadelphia to Sanctuary Hills.
  • Two days later, on October 6th 1777, the https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Forts_Clinton_and_Montgomery took place, during which British Forces captured two forts by misleading American troops, and drawing them out from their previously safe position. Not only does this tie in with another date marked on the very same calendar, but the location follows the progression from the previous two battles much further up the East Coast, thus strengthening the connection with the family moving from Philadelphia to Boston.
  • Both sides in the above battle were actually led by men with the same surname (which was Clinton), effectively implying a family connection even though they were not related. This is surprisingly similar to my suggestion above that two families were both misled by the same individual (Madison Li) at almost exactly the same time, and both deceptions involved vaults, that could be equated to the forts mentioned above. In one vault, two people went in, in the other, two were taken out. In both cases, the two individuals concerned were a child and one of their parents.
  • Also worthy of note is the fact that the Revolutionary war, much the same as both members of our protagonist couple, started in Boston, and then travelled to other areas of the country. The later progression back up the East Coast, literally back towards Boston, seems just a little too coincidental not to have significance.
  • A few more facts: Philadelphia was actually mentioned in Fallout 3, on http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Abraham_Washington's terminal. Washington is searching for the http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Liberty_Bell. Also, during the Microsoft Showcase, the protagonist, as a nod to Microsoft's head of XBOX division, was actually called 'PHIL' (as in PHILadelphia) Spencer. Next, we have the fact that Brian T Delaney, the voice actor for the male protagonist, is actually from Philadelphia, and even mentions it https://youtu.be/1KC5rttlnC8?t=8m46s in his interview. Also, and this is a big one, Philadelphia is remarkably close to the first announced nuclear detonations in New York and Pensylvannia. It is worth noting that Philadelphia also features a large airport and Navy Yard similar to those seen in Boston.
  • One connection that could perhaps hint at a theme for the DLC is the infamous https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Philadelphia_Experiment, during which the https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Eldridge_(DE-173) was apparently successfully cloaked in the Naval Shipyard after being bombarded with electromagnetic energy. The experiment, much like many of the vault experiments, was said to have had horrific repercussions on the crew.
  • And finally, Remember when I mentioned that the male protagonist was a Marine? This was due to the release date being on November 10th, the date that the Marine Corps began back in 1775. Well guess WHERE the Marine Corps started? The https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tun_Tavern right next to Old City, Philadelphia (also seen https://www.google.co.uk/maps/place/Tun+Tavern/@39.9472905,-75.1426603,15z/data=http://forums.bethsoft.com/topic/1528436-the-mother-of-all-theories/!4m2!3m1!1s0x0000000000000000:0xdc43a3cb40f816c1). The same area I believe our family lived, in their 'city home by the riverside', which is also right next to the Liberty Bell as mentioned above. This riverside association could even be connected with the concept of the Marines and also to Project Purity. Finally, the name of the hospital within a mile of Old City, Philadelphia, and the location where I believe Shaun took his first breath is: https://www.google.co.uk/maps/place/Thomas+Jefferson+University+Hospital/@39.9496977,-75.1576139,15z/data=http://forums.bethsoft.com/topic/1528436-the-mother-of-all-theories/!4m2!3m1!1s0x0000000000000000:0xb8544acdeeec18ea, which ties in directly with the http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Jefferson_Memorial, the location where the Lone Wanderer was born, and a solid fact that ties Dr Madison Li to both games. I believe that this is also the hospital where both Jack and Shaun had almost lost their lives.

OK, let me see if I got this right...

Spoiler

? Dr. Madison Li is basically the villain of the tale. She is working against the Institute to create an army of pure-strained synthetic people, all led by Shaun who she ordered to be taken out of stasis in 2258. There's a slight problem with this, does she really care about the Institute and the Synths? I don't recall her ever addressing that beyond, ‘I want this annoying old man gone.’

? She murdered Catherine, Lone Wanderer's mother, because she feared what would happen if the truth came out about her past. Question: what exactly would James, Catherine, and the Brotherhood of Steel do if they found out? Arrest her? Tell her to turn around and go home? Why would she fear Catherine so much she wants her dead? Wouldn't it be more simple to just say, “Congrats on the new baby! Now, it might be dangerous to raise the child here at Project Purity, so I suggest raising him/her at Megaton where he/she will be safe.” Also, I'm curious as to how she managed to murder Catherine, a scientist, when she's surrounded by scientists all the time, and the father of the newborn himself is a scientist.

? I seriously doubt, though, she had a hand in James' breaking out of Vault 101 and starting that whole chaotic mess we find ourselves in. That was on James and James alone. Him and the Overseer who overreacted just a tad. If she had a plan, she probably wasn't going to make James a high priority on it.

? Philadelphia will be a major, MAJOR DLC. If this is true, then why not have it be part of the actual game?

That's all I've got, but very compelling theory! I like this a lot.

Wouldn't Dr Zimmer be the bad guy considering he was hunting for the Artificial Man in FO3. Dr Li. was annoyed at his presence and didn't really care about the android.

Edit: Also, aren't those flags given to relatives of those killed in the line of duty? So that would mean that the flag was because of a relative. A parent or sibling maybe.

Todd Howard himself said that some of what NPCs tell us in-game is not actually true. If my theory is correct, then Zimmer would not even realise that he is actually working for Madison Li. The success of her plan whilst in the Capital Wasteland would require total deniability on her part, therefore she would not take any direct action with anything that could reveal who she really is. And so in spite of the issue with Harkness, rather than intervene herself, a certain Lone Wanderer is put to work.

I think that the real issue with Harkness is not so much his value as a piece of 'misplaced tech', but more a case of what he has inside his head. His position before he went rogue would have given him access to a great deal of information regarding the inner workings of the Institute. And so, one way or another, this information would need to be either removed or destroyed. Unfortunately, the same would apply to Catherine, who perhaps got just a little too close, and so Li simply eliminates the threat so she can continue her work.

As for the flag display case, under certain circumstances, they can actually be awarded to living veterans as seen http://www.americanmadeforamericanheroes.com/faq.html#10.

Heh, my knowledge of flags for service people was from movies and TV shows. :) I was in the Royal Australian Air Force for 12 years and all I got was a plain certificate of service.

For that mater there a lot of loose ends that no one ever thinks about in all fallout's for whatever reason

Point lookout there is a surprisingly detailed Side quest that involves one Wan Yang/Jamie Patrick/Maria Lopez/Stanley Derrick/Five-Claw-Dragon.....the objective of which seems to be to eliminate her after she blows up a suspicious mini sub. . . but who wonders about the Agent who set up the final act of that side quest. . . for that mater how do we know that Wan Yang/Jamie Patrick/Maria Lopez/Stanley Derrick/Five-Claw-Dragon were actually the same person, when it could have been a Cell of agents, and the one in the morgue may have just been a part of that cell.

Good stuff gkk7z!

Doc Li always seemed a bit 'off' to me. Pushy/rude and knew way too much for someone who just worked on hydroponics. Could just be they needed a handwave to get Optimus Prime running and Li was convenient. However I never understood why she'd just walk away from Project Purity after it was activated. People get attatched to things they're passionate about and she just leaves? Something wrong with that woman.

Your theories about Jack, Nora, and Shaun seem sound, fits the evidence.

There's a lot of thought put into this, which makes me highly doubtful it will be true considering it's Beth.

But I guess that's the fun in waiting and I won't say no to being pleasantly surprised.

Spoiler
Can you post the evidence too back up your Doctor Madison Li theory? Because you say you've found compelling evidence, but you didn't present anything but your theory.

There's also a lot you seem too have forgotten from Fallout 3, so lets do a refresher:

  • James left the Vault on his own, Li had nothing to do with him breaking out.
  • James was the one who figured out about needing a GECK before going too see Madison in Rivet City.
  • Madison Li was doing experiments in portable fusion power along with her experiments in hydroponics, she says it multiple times.
  • Liberty Prime was having power management issues that the Brotherhood couldn't solve; they were attempting too re-route power from other systems, and while it's never stated how Li helped, I believe it was probably by installing new or upgrading the existing power systems.
  • Li left the Capital Wasteland after Project Purity is activated but before the Lone Wanderer woke up at the start of Broken Steel, so she would be gone before Liberty Prime is destroyed.
  • Li wouldn't have had time too really study the GECK, because Colonel Autumn secures the GECK after the Lone Wanderer gets it from Vault 87 and the Enclave installs it in Project Purity.
  • In order too really study, understand and than reverse engineer the GECK, she would have had to taken it apart first too understand it's components. But that would be impossible as it is a key component in Project Purity, and the Brotherhood wouldn't have allowed it too be dismantled.

I know Todd said that not everything NPC's say is factual, but I seriously doubt that James would lie too his son/daughter about him deciding too leave the Vault on his own.

I'd like too see your evidence for:

  1. What did Catherine learn about Li that she was so afraid of getting out that she would murder her colleague?
  2. Where it's hinted that Li actually murdered Catherine.
  3. This secret communications to who ever she was supposedly talking to up in the Commonwealth ordering the abduction of Shaun.
  4. How she even knew about Shaun in the first place.
  5. How she was able too "observe" James and the Lone Wanderer in Vault 101.
  6. How she orchestrated James' escape without James' knowledge that someone was pulling his strings.

You've also pushed that Li was originally from Boston and is/was apart of the Institute, I'm curious too know why Dr. Zimmer didn't recognize Dr. Li despite all the face time he gets with her. Even if he didn't recognize her, you'd think he might mention something like "Boy that Doctor Li looks familiar."

I generally agree with this overview. It looks like you found some possible connections between Boston and DC, but didn't have anyone other than Dr. Li and Zimmer having gone to both places. Furthermore, you fixated on Li, as Zimmer was too busy hunting down Harkness/A3-21. And I can follow that logic there.

What I can't follow is the jump from Li being a minor character in FO3 to the person who kicked off most of the plot in FO3 and FO4. The evidence simply isn't there, and it looks like you decided what had to happen in the link first, and then ascribe it all to Li because she's the only one we know if for certain that made the journey.

Some of us have been a bit suspicious of her since Point lookout, because there were things in that DLC that were left wide open after the fact.

Like who and what happen to the Spys controler who set up a lot of that(Because there was obviously some kind of network before the war) and why was there a resemblance to the wanted poster and Doctor Li? http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/OnlySixFaces

As with all farfetched theories, you assume that A) the writers care that much, B) those hoofbeats are zebras, and C) all connections are meaningful.

Being a parent, which is relevant to almost every part of the above theory as well as the game itself, I can appreciate how much care and attention goes into a project of this magnitude. In fact, Fallout 4 has been in development for such a long time, the earliest confirmed detail is a piece of concept art created way back in 2009.

This drawing, the one showing the power armor in the player garage, is strikingly similar to what we have been shown in actual gameplay. Considering the fact that have been shown around two-hundred concept drawings in total, I am quite certain that there are many very detailed parts of the story, visual design, sound design and other areas that we are yet to see. In fact, there is so much content in this game, Even Todd Howard, who has been involved in the project from day one, has not seen everything that has been included.

I'm fairly confident that, given the countless hours that must have been poured into creating Fallout 4 during this time, there have been literally hundreds of connections made by the writers and designers tying the individual components of the game together, as well as linking them in meaningful ways to other games in the series, as well as real world facts and information.

Just to put this in perspective, on this theory alone, I have invested something close to 100 hours of research. Now multiply that by a team of 100 staff at BGS over the last six years :)

Nice work gkk7z. Thank you, it's been very entertaining.

The first part, about the protagonists and location, sounds good to me. Might be more or less correct.

I'm not so sure about Li, Shaun and the Augment Army. Maybe you overshoot there. I'm not sure, and I certainly didn't do any research, so it's just a gut feeling.

But argumentatively, I mostly concur with turkeysocks (#15). Li is rather shaky, plus she is not needed to put Shaun in as a major plot element.

We may see her in FO4, but I don't think as the main adversary. Probably a side quest.

But again, thank you, I appreciate the amount of work you put in here.
