Based on what little we've heard of Skyrim's music, I have reason to be optimistic, though we've only heard two pieces from the game, the main theme, and some piece of music used for a context we're not sure of yet, and both have impressed me. If everything else is that good, then I won't be dissappointed.
Of course, it's also possible that we've heard all the good stuff and everything else will be a dissappointment, because that was my problem with Morrowind's music, the main theme was great, but I felt that most of the exploration and combat music was pretty bland, at best decent, Oblivion I actually felt improved upon that somewhat, though I didn't like the main theme quite as much as Morrowind, but at this point, I think Skyrim's main theme may be my favorite Elder Scrolls theme to date, and will the other music hold up to the bar it sets? I hope so, we'll see in time.
And I actually agree on different enemies having different combat music, it's not needed for common enemies, perhaps, but boss fights really deserve it, when I'm fighting an epic battle against a dragon, having the same music that would play for all other enemies just
does not capture the proper feel. Other than that, we definitely need more music that changes depending on the location and situation, in particular, certain major events in the game could benefit from special music. Having the right background music for what's going on is important as it can really have a major impact on the atmosphere, choosing the wrong music can potentially ruin it while the right music can make a scene all the more effective. And the only way to ensure that the music always matches the situation is to change it depending on location and situation. Also, combat music shouldn't play until one side actually attacks the other, or until enemies enter the field of view, at least, because if it plays as soon as a nearby actor enters "combat" mode, then it essentially serves as an early warning system to tell you that enemies are attacking you before you see them, ensuring that they can't possibly surprise you. In Oblivion and Morrowind, I always know an enemy is nearby when I hear the combat music playing, and start looking around for any sign of enemies, if you have it only start playing when you coul concievably know the enemies are there, then they might walk up right behind me and I won't know they're there until they attack me.
Sounds like a dungeon theme, or maybe exploration music for some bleaker landscapes such as the volcanic tundra region they've talked up so much. But yeah, what we've heard of the music so far is pretty amazing.
That's sort of what I was thinking too, in any case, I don't expect to hear that in a place that's supposed to be peaceful and pleasant.
And I'm actually hoping that not just dungeons, but different types of landscapes can get potentially different music as well, as that would serve to better capture their atmosphere.
