The Music...

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 8:52 pm

I haven't played Morrowind in years so I'm not sure how the music played out in that game but in oblivion the music in the game kind of annoyed me. Although I know it changed when my character was being hunted which helped me defeat all animals and foes it still annoyed me running through the woods hearing the same melody play over and over again instead of hundreds of other things I could be hearing in the woods... What I'd like to hear is the sound of the wind blowing through trees and such, animals calling, water flowing, some ones feet hitting the ground as they are running up to attack me and so forth...ambient ambient ambient....save the music for the opening, ending, pubs, musicians in the street and key moments in the game.

Morrowind had nothing like that, BTW, except through mods. Oblivion had more ambient world sounds than previous games, along with more selection in music (MW only had explore, battle, and "special"; Ob has explore, town, dungeon, battle, and "special"). I don't think they'd put musicians in the street because they expect you to be listening to the background music -- in-world music would clash horribly with that, as was the case with those aforementioned MW mods, and the Ob mod Nehrim, which added some.

I would like to see more selection in background music, though. Explore music further separated according to time and weather (different music to play during a snowy day, compared to a moonlit night, for instance). And maybe split dungeon music according to dungeon types, too (a Dwemer ruin should have a different soundtrack than a Nordic cave, IMO).

BGM (BackGround Music) =/= NPC speech

NPC singing = NPC speech

BGM volume, thus, has no effect on the volume of the NPC minstrel's singing. :P

It would be cool if in-game musicians played songs from previous games like Daggerfall and Morrowind.

And for lutes and such instruments to be playable by the character (just hold down the atttack button to play a song, release and hold to play a different song)

I like the score in Marrowind so uplifting. In Oblivion is ok. It grows on you. The score in Fallout3 is good. When I enough listening to 3dog I just go to the score in Fallout3. In The Witcher is excellent. Let be a score in Skyrim.

I like music playing while adventuring through forests and hiking over mountains. I would however love it if taverns had bards and the like playing, Game would detect if any bards are about, and playing, and if there is it would automatically have the game soundtrack fade out so the only music is from the bard(s).

The ambient music was beautiful imo. It should be there when exploring outside of cities.

Music is essential. Trust me, I once started playing Morrowind without music... It's really really dull.

The idea of having no music in an Elder Scrolls game is blasphemy!

I say keep the music, but they could perhaps do something about the combat music they switch to whenever an enemy is attacking. It works sort of like an alarm that tells you when there is an enemy there, even though you haven't discovered that enemy yet. If the combat music begins when I'm out and walking about I start turning in circles, frantically looking for enemies.

"haha, I knew you were sneaking behind my back. The change in music told me so!"

I know, i love the music in OB and MW. I didn't even bother reading more than a few lines of OP's post.

Edit: you can still hear birds chirping and the wind blowing when the musics playing anyway.

I am probably in the minority here but I cant say I am all that fond of Jeremy Soule's work. I know there are a lot of fans of his work however I just dont see what everyone what everyone is going on about, to me his music just seems to lack emotion for lack of a better word. Even the title track doesnt do anything for me, sure its big and pompous but there is just no substance or emotion behind it. Of course as I said I am probably in the minority here but I wouldnt mind seeing Skyrim go in a different direction in regards to music.

Was I seriously the only one that immediately thought of Pirates Of The Carribean when the intro song started? I'm all for music during my gaming but only if it's done well. Just like in movies they sort of add to the experience. Ever watched a horror movie with the sound muted? BORING. On that same note, ever watch a horror movie with lousy music? Just as boring. Heck, with music you can even make Mary Poppins seem creepy.

Hence why I voted for music, with a big BUT added to it of course. If it's done well then bring it on and give it to me. If it's done poorly then please let me press the mute button to my hearts content. I want creepy sounds when I enter a dungeon, serene mystical tones when I'm strolling through the beautifull landscape, hurried epic music when I'm battling but most of all I want it to blend. Like someone said above me, the moment the combat music started playing during Oblivion I started looking around for my enemy. Okay, it glitched a couple of times and didn't start, causing me to nearly get a heart attack when I was suddenly attacked from behind. Which was a lot better in my opinion. Make me look around, wondering if there are any enemies near Skyrim. Let me have a few content moments as I gaze into the sunset and let me have those moments of fright when there is a dagger suddenly planted in my back or creep me out when I enter a dungeon filled with the undead, making me wonder if this was such a good idea.

I always turn the backround music off. Musicians playing in towns or taverns and stages would be awsome though.

I remember posting a topic suggesting the very same thing a month ago or so and got the exact same, lame "if you don't like the music just turn it off!" answers.

I've always felt the score for these games became to hollywood, and would really do much more if it was only done by in-game musicians (NPCs) and then adding more ambience for natural/rural environments. The idea does not seem to take here on these forums, however...

Wow...in the 4 or 5 years I've been playing OB through the 800+ hours of multiple play throughs on all 3 systems(360,PS3,PC) until today, I had never heard any of the Pirates singing! Thank you for the suggestion I really appreciate it. The other night I was plying with said settings and my wife kept asking me if I heard the crickets in the house it took her 5 minutes tor so to figure out it was OB playing nothing but ambient, she actually asaked me how to play...LOL she hates video games....anyways Now as long as Bethesda keeps the sound options like this I'll be very happy!!!

Oh and I am happy to see that in the game play trailer you'll notice in the stealth kill scene there is a band of sorts playing in a pub setting of sorts...Do I have ESP???LOL
