The music.

Music can make or break a game for me.
What do you guys think music should be like, what did you like and not like about oblivion/morrowind's music that you would like to see in Skyrim?

Personally, I loved oblivion's music, and I still think its fantastic. I prefer peaceful harmonious harps like oblivion's explore music to some violent violin playing.
By the sounds of skyrim's theme, it may indicate that the music might move into a more epic zone, than the harmonious music in oblivion.
As I said, I'm not a big fan of EPIC classical but I don't mind it for the battle music.
Of course, the battle music system has to be changed. I used to hear the music and then look around to see what was attacking me because I wasn't aware of an enemy.
I would also like to see some light ambient music when you are stealthed or something like that, similar to assassin's creed target approach music, maybe?
I liked the dungeon music, it was very fitting. I liked the town music too. It needs to express how everyone is running around doing their business and stuff. Violin plucking, etc.
And maybe you hear tavern music when you get near an inn, coming from the inn? Like in sid miers pirates? (SM's pirates ftw, best pirate game period).

So yeah, I would like to hear your opinions on music.

I'm going to be a sad panda if the main Skyrim theme doesn't start blaring in the background when we fight Alduin. It's called Cartharsis, Bethesda. Look it up. (jk, jk, you guys are awesome. but it would have been epic to have the oblivion theme play during the climix of the respective quest lines, like the fight with mannimarco, the oblivion crisis main quest, the battle with jygallag, ect.)

Yes, because surely it is impossible for a violin not to sound "violent". I mean come on, the very name implies violence!
Not that I wish to get hung up on one tiny detail, but seriously.

Anyway,i find it difficult to debate the preferred music-style for a game that isn't out yet. What little we've heard so far sounds very fitting, and to be honest, while I didn't think of Oblivion's music as strictly "bad" I often found it boring, and it didn't really do anything to motivate me to explore or anything else for that matter. It seemed to fit better in a frikkin spa or something, rather than in an adventurous fantasy-setting.

My main hope for music in Skyrim is that they will have a system similar to New Vegas, as in certain areas having certain songs related to them.

Oblivion had a pretty epic theme, and it maintained it's classical explore music. Jeremy Soule is still in charge of music; I think the musical atmosphere will remain much the same. This is a good thing!

But, I don't think there's anything Bethesda's going to be able to do about the battle music starting early -- at least, in Oblivion is was a difficult part of the engine to effect.

I liked the battle music starting early. It added to the feel and made me react, sometimes role playing with the drama.

At this point, to my knowledge we've only heard too songs from Skyrim, the main theme, the epic one with the "Dovahkiin!" chorus we all know, and one that sounds like it could be a dungeon theme, and we haven't heard any of the music in the context where it's actually used in the game yet, and that's important as well, because even a track that is good on its own can still ruin the atmosphere if it's used in an inappropriate situation. But without taking into account the context it's used in, the music itself sounds good and appropriate for Skyrim.

As for things I'd like to see in terms of music, one thing I'd like is more context sensitive music, as in, more music that's fitted to what's happening in the game or where you are, Oblivion did better in this regard than Morrowind because whereas Morrowind only had generic exploration music that played no matter what kind of location you were in as long as nothing was trying to kill you, and combat music, which obviously played when you got into a fight. Oblivion also introduced music for towns and dungeons that is seperate from what plays in the wilderness, and this is nice, but I think it could benefit from some improvement still. If nothing else, I'd like certain special locations and events to get unique music, because some places or events deserve it. The fight between the avatar of Akatosh and Mehrunes Dagon in Oblivion for example could really have benefited from something other than generic dungeon music. Also, I'd say that boss fights should get different music from the generic combat music, because the average combat theme in Morrowind or Oblivion doesn't really convey the power of a proper boss fight, but on the other hand, having the Skyrim theme play every time you get attacked by a rat would just be excessive, besides, having unique music play in special situations can help to make those situations seem more... well, special, and for that to work, it has to be heard at only said special moments.

I really like the ambient music in oblivion but it kinda ruined by the battle music interrupting it every time you got close to an enemy. Even if you run sort of close to a mudcrab the dramatic music comes on which is really just annoying. Also you could never really be suprised and ambushed since you were always warned of danger.

It would be cool if the battle music only came on once you were very close to the enemy with your weapon drawn and the enemy on screen. It would stop once you had escaped/killed it.

An option to turn off battle music would be greatly apricieated too

I find Soule's work to be competent, but definitely lacking in character and, well, soule (pun intended). Why not add some other instruments into the mix? A lot of rpgs tately have (age of conan, LotR Online, Two Worlds II) have this authentic sounding *mood* music that gets you immersed in the world, which specifically caters to the visuals of the game.

Say you're in a desert, you'll hear moody guitar and oboe gently lulling you into a trance, or in the mountains you might hear a lonely sounding clarinet piece. Why must Bethesda's music sound so bloody generic? Moreover, why can't they seem to equate visuals with music? When I'm in the Tundra of Skyrim I expect to hear music which channels and enhances the open, cold landscape which I see and am immersed in, or when in the Rift, I expect to hear music which enhances the mystery and warmth of the Fall Forest. Nuff said.

Totally agreed ! I would even go a bit further :

Game music is very important for me, too. But what really matters the most is the "music-play-system", which defines, what music is played to what time / in what location / on what occation, etc. (what I so far heard of J. Souls music is perfect for the game already, imo). As already pointed out TES had some improvement on this matter in their latest games, but it could still be a lot better (As already exsiting in several Mods for Morrowind / Oblivion):

I would like very much a different, individual tracklist for each major town, each different countryside / area / region, each faction (guild-house-music !) and each thematically different location, like Tavernes, different dungeon-types (tombs, caves, ruins, etc.), religious and military buildings or even ownable player-houses and music for diving-sessions (+ underwater sounds).

But the best would be, imo, if the music- / playsystem would not only be triggered by locational values, but by a sort of time-based values as well. Let me explain: I would find it even more awsome, if (in addition to the suggestions above) each major city, dungeon, etc. would have its own, unique titel-music (such as the Morrowind- / Oblivion title) which is played only at the first approach of the player entering this location and some time / countering (like every 5., 10. ... entering of the player) afterwards, but in between would be replaced by the remaining tracklist-titles of the corresponding location.
Wouldn't this be great ? This way you would have an (musicaly-) exciting first approach of the most important locations, but wouldn't get bored by its repitition (like especially in Morrowind ... despite it's the best Fantasy-RPG-titlemusic I ever heard, imo :tes: ).
And especially in Skyrim this shouldn't be very complicated / timeconsuming to implement, I guess, since the Radiant-Story system should already keep track of what / where the player character does something and to what time / repition. A kind of "Radiant-Music-System", so to speak.

I truelly loved the music in morrowind. Not much with oblivion. I have all of the explore morrowind themes on my ipod XD, and i plan to put them in the music folder of Skyrim when i have bought the game. Along with skyrim's original music as well.

Hey, some really nice fantasy-music I didn't know of. Thanks man / lady ! :icecream:
I will use some of this for my several music-mods, I think (especially for my Telvanni-themes).

I actually turn the music off by using the ini file. That way the ambient sounds really pop. I use mods that enhance the sounds in Oblivion so i prefer listning to those than the music. Although i do like the theme at the beginning of the game.

Although I love the Morrowind music, the Oblivion music was too polished and "murky". I think Age of Conan has the best fantasy soundtrack ever created by humans.
