The naming of the Nevarine.

I was just thinking to myself, could the name "Nevarine" possibly be based upon Nazarene?

I'm pretty sure it's spent Nerevarine, there are two Rs in there.

But in any case, I don't know how Bethesda came up with the name Nerevarine, though, I'm pretty sure the in-game origins is that it comes from Nerevar, the ancient Dunmer hero the Nerevarine is supposed to be the reincarnation of, I guess in this case, the "Personrine" thing means the incarnation of said person.

I don't really know what Nazarene is supposed to be, though.

My guess would be something like "coming from Nazareth", but I don't think there is much of a connexion here because, as Selbeth said, the propre title is "NeREvarin" rather than "Nevarin".

nazarene and nerevarine dont sound the same at all. nerevar and nazar would sound similar, but not nazarene and nerevar

It's "Nerevarine". It's utterly amazing how many times that gets misspelled here, especially considering Morrowind was a game in which almost all of the dialogue is written on screen. It probably means "reincarnation of Nerevar" in Tamriel, since Shezzarine and other such words are used to describe other entities which are reincarnated heroes.

I've thought the name is more than a coincidence myself. Morrowind can be seen as similar to Roman-occupied Judea in a number of ways, especially the fact that both were able to keep their own temples and beliefs, as well as their own religious police. Both peoples had Zealots, a faction assassinating outlanders. I read once that the Judeans expected the Messiah would be a warrior king, and the Ashlanders expected the same from the Nerevarine. Both expectations weren't exactly met -- the Nerevarine seen in "Morrowind" is a loner.
