The new Map system

I adore the new map.

Problem?

I reiterate: Its a waste. A paper map can convey the same information and actually be immersive at the same time.

Plus I find it worrying that they put so much effort into the UI.

First off, i dont even see how you could consider the new system to be a map. More of a 3d model. I dislike the looks of it but who knows. Id prefer a paper map you pull out.

How exactly is it not a map? It's an abstracted representation of the world that shows where you and a number of important settlements and landmarks are.

I like the new map. Personally I think it's a good improvement.

Yeah....

I guess I would also prefer a paper map over A DETAILED 3D MODEL to get me out of a tough area.

So?

Might as well complain how the new graphics doesn't add new information either...

Sorry...i guess i just disaprove of the new system. It would be like using a replica dollhouse as a map. Which i would just consider a 3d model. Also what is your opinion on the topic, or youre just commenting to insult my opinion?

My two cents. I always play mages, so no immersion breaking for me. Just use whatever the hell the mage character's powers are to get a wizard's mind's eye view of the landscape. If I was the warrior of thief playing type, however, I think my vote would definitely go for old school in game parchment map.

Not sure on it yet, I'd like to see how it functions while I play with it before judging but to be honest it looks kind of annoying.

Warning *Fable 3* Warning

Abort, abort, abort!

(Graphical UIs like this are fail, but we'll see, maybe Beth beats the system)

That's really not an apt comparison. It's not even a new system, it's just a 3D map. In all other respects it functions in exactly the same manner as Oblivion's map.

Its just a total waste of time/resources/disc space, when a 2D map would have been more than sufficient and actually fit the setting.

Because we'll be in the UI a lot? I don't think the 3d map, or the rest of the UI, took away too much dev time. It'll be fine.

@XTC I don't think the map is wasting space on a Blu Ray.

Do you actually think it takes up that much space? It's a few megabytes at most.

Or even less...

It doesn't seem to use any new graphics at all, just the distant LOD. Todd said it himself, the camera just zooms out.

Depending on the quality it could actually. If they put lots of detail in as well as a good texture it for it could actually take alot of space up.

An extra sword would have been more important than the map gimmick.

Still using the word gimmick to refer to things you don't like, I see.

Seriously, it's not 1996 anymore. Disc space is not that big of a concern, and a dual-layer disc probably won't be completely filled by game data.

I just hope it has a top-down view. I'm not really keen of the whole meteorologist perspective on a fantasy world.

It adds nothing to the game, its a gimmick. An extra hairstyle would have been more important, the 3d map is a waste of time/space.

Id say its a prefect comparison. 3D gps model of skyrim and a replica dollhouse....i dont see any fault whatsoever in that comparison. Also you still havent told me your opinion? Whats your take on the 3d gps google map.

They're not biting their nails as they get down to the wire, torn on whether to include an extra hairstyle or a map that is literally nothing more than markers laid over long distance landscape models. I'm sure it took less than a week to code and test it. Hell, making a stylized 2D map may well have taken longer. There's nothing wrong with it and it's not a waste of precious resources. You just don't like the way it looks. Say that instead of trying to invent ways to validate your opinion.

Er, when Beth says that some things are getting cut and merged because of resources, then they bring out gimmicks like the map, yeah it leaves people scratching their heads. I guess this is just some feature thats supposed to appeal to the graphics hounds, or another newb feature.

I wouldn't really say that. It doesn't exactly appeal to me and I like my graphics.
