Id say its a prefect comparison. 3D gps model of skyrim and a replica dollhouse....i dont see any fault whatsoever in that comparison. Also you still havent told me your opinion? Whats your take on the 3d gps google map.

There is such a thing as a functional and accurate 3D map in real life. It functions in the exact same way as a 2D map, it just has a prettier presentation of the topography. A dollhouse is a toy that doesn't accurately represent a real house, since it usually has missing walls.

Also I stated my opinion earlier. I think the new map looks great and is a huge improvement over prior titles.

EDIT: By the way, Google Earth and the vast majority of GPS recievers use 2D maps.

Er, when Beth says that some things are getting cut and merged because of resources, then they bring out gimmicks like the map, yeah it leaves people scratching their heads. I guess this is just some feature thats supposed to appeal to the graphics hounds, or another newb feature.

Judging by the responses from most people who are for it being something along the lines of "looks awesome", "looks sweet", "looks cool"....id say it might fit in with the whole trying to appeal to a wider playerbase thing.

You know what a replica is yes? A dollhouse thats a miniaturized version of a real house would be exactly the same as a what you describe in the definition of a map. Not sure how you can argue against that, but i guess you could just pull out of nowhere that it would be missing walls for some reason?

Also i had a little chuckle at your opinion which i saw after i posted just above this one...all about looking cool i guess.

edit: last post here, i dislike new map, thats it

The only reason I've seen cited for cut features is time constraints, not space limitations. I honestly don't think anyone's scratching their heads over this but you. It appeals to me because it looks nice and also looks more functional, as it will show paths with greater accuracy since it uses the same data as the landscape. It should also automatically incorporate any data that is added by mods, yet another advantage over the paper map. I've been playing TES since Morrowind, too, so it's not a "noob bait" feature. Believe it or not, having played Daggerfall does not make you smarter or better than newcomers to the series. Drop the elitist "true fan" attitude, please.

I wouldn't really say that. It doesn't exactly appeal to me and I like my graphics.

Beth's appeals dont have to be successful.

Personally, I don't put it into a category of "graphics." It's more "flash." Like adding lots of cool, pretty looking streaks and particle affects to weapons when you do a special move, or the finishing moves.

Then you haven't read many threads on the subject I guess.

Mods do nothing for console brethren.

Elitist? I just care. Take attributes, classes, birth signs, 2D maps, merged skills, etc. Just dont take spell creation.

I love the new map, it looks like it will be a lot of fun to spend time with  I hope we can spin the view around, zoom in and out, and add bookmarks to it... maybe we'll even be able to use it to find dragons?
And everyone else who isn't a fan of it is more than welcome to use the paper map that comes with the game

Most dollhouses are not replicas of anything or even meant to look like a real house. Their primary function is providing entertainment to little girls, not providing locational data.

I personally think it looks really annoying, I want to see a traditional map, not some 3D rendering of the world, it looks like Civilization 4.

well if you pre-order , there is your map, and its not a 3d rendering its the actual game wold just zoomed out

You guys all worried about immersion, isn't it EXTREMELY immersive to pull out the real world map that comes in the box to plot your way around the world :D!

Was there any point in that post that i pointed out that the dollhouse was a device for little girl entertainment....i said it was a replica, so thats all you have to respond to...if its an exact mini replica of a house...it is 100% equatable to the skyrim gps 3D model....stop making up crap and adding in completely irrelevant opinions. A 3D model is a 3D model any way you look at it....whether its a model of a mountain or a house(in which case the model would be the dollhouse). You consider a 3D model to be a map...i dont....i consider a 3D model to be just that, a 3D model...but it fits into your definition of a map....just like how an exact replica dollhouse fits perfectly into your definition of a map. I dont care to use either as a map. But thats just my opinion, which i stated was only my opinion.

And it seems all the people, including yourself, voting for the new system just like the looks of it. I could care less if it looks new and flashy, but i guess im in the minority. I prefer content over looks. Id prefer not to see every nook and cranny of the world in a shrunken form before i actually see it first hand, that would take MUCH of the awe factor/discovery/exploration away for me. But again, only my opinion. You think it looks cool so thats all that matters.

It is entirely aesthetic. Of course people like it for looks. No content whatsoever is being omitted.

Also:

Map
–noun
1. a representation, usually on a flat surface, as of the features of an area of the earth or a portion of the heavens, showing them in their respective forms, sizes, and relationships according to some convention of representation: a map of Canada.

I'm calling a spade a spade. The fact that it is 3D is entirely irrelevant. It shows you where stuff is in an accurate manner and is used primarily to find your location and what direction you're going in. That is a map. And the purpose of a dollhouse is not as relevant as the other thing that I cited: namely, that most dollhouses are not replicas of anything at all. They're not meant to represent real homes and often aren't even laid out like a real house. You're making a non-logical leap; "It is 3D, therefore it is the same as a dollhouse."

Surely you're not suggesting that a 2D map would have more "content" than a 3D map? Or is there something that you can add to a 2D map that you can't add to a 3D map?

Exactly my point. There is less information infront of you on a 2D map.....you just get the general layout of things....so when you go to that huge gorge you only have a basic idea of its shape and location....as opposed to seeing it in advance in a tiny 3d scale model view, which just ruins the experience of finding out what its like for yourself, as youve already seen it.. I personally(that means my opinion) prefer to have a more vague 2d map where i actually have to find my way around, compared to a an exact scale model that ruins the grandness of the game by showing it in the tiny view before you experience it for yourself.
