The Next Elderscrolls are Written

Post » Fri Apr 08, 2011 6:59 am

I was reading a number of posts the other days that discussed this possibly being the final TES game, at least in the string of lore they have been following, as the Elder Scrolls seem to culminate in this final event with Alduin. But at the End of Oblivion--Which I went through again last night--after Martin merges with Akatosh or whatever he does, he says in narration that "When the next Elder Scrolls are written, they will be written by you."

Now I'm not talking conspiracy or anything like that, just speculating about possible future lore, prophecies beyond what is currently written in the Elder Scrolls. I know this thread probably seems almost pointless, but I just found it interesting that they left it wide open in the end Oblivion to add as much as they like and not have it horribly contradict that which has been written. Mind on no expert on TES lore, not by any means. I'm sure there are people on this forum who know WAAAYY more than I do.

Figured might make for interesting conversation. Thoughts?

The Elder Scrolls are not the basis of the prophecy concerning Alduin, though they probably do chronicle them. Alduin's Wall is, to our knowledge, the main source of the prophecy, or at least a depiction of the prophecy made by those who knew of or were the source, not the Elder Scrolls themselves.

And I think I can say this relative safety because if it was the Elder Scrolls that were culminating to this final event, I highly doubt that the Empire would have fell as it did. After all, they are, or were, in control of the Elder Scrolls. Whereas Alduin's Wall is likely in some cave somewhere or hidden in High Hrothgar where the Empire probably would not look for a divination of its fate.

Now, as far as what Martin said, I do not believe it should be taken literally. I believe that it was more him talking to the player rather than your character, as we the players do technically write the Elder Scrolls with every action we make. As in, we make our own fates, which is related to us being able to do whatever we want.

We can also just assume that the Heroes of each game eventually, during their inevitable fall into obscurity and assuming they don't die, probably become monks after we the players relinquish our hold on them.

My point exactly. And dont expect lore be written by you. Althought various ending would be awesome, how would they writte the following TES., i mean TES VI, upon which end ?

Oblivion is still my favorite 360 game, I hope they continue the series for a long time.

This is exactly what he meant. He meant it metaphorically, not literally.

I'm no lore buff by any means but I have been paying attention. I honestly don't believe that Bethesda just up and decided to tie the events of the previous games into this one. I think it's was all written long before Morrowind released. I say this because in each of the last two installments people have found clues in lore that point to events in the next game. I personally think that Martin's comment has a direct connection to the events in this latest chapter. The appearance that this is the last Elder Scrolls might be because this is as far as they got with the original story written years ago. I may be wrong but it's very possible that this is indeed the the last Elder Scrolls in this particular story arc. The next game may very well have no connection to the previous games as a new story arc will begin.

Those are very good points.

Perhaps signaled by not beginning as a prisoner anymore or something along those lines. I agree with worm, they might finish up the current arc. But there are many many more Elder Scrolls. This could go on for a long time yet and I hope they do. To me, TES is one of those things that could go on forever. With such a long time between releases, it's probably one of the few game series I get excited about, along with Battlefield (not including Bad Company titles, but I liked those as well), Deus Ex and Half Life. I find it hard to get excited about COD when they release a new title every year.

That is a good point as well. I also noticed that Martin called Uriel Septim Dragonborn. That certainly ties into Skyrim. It amazes me how much lore exists for TES. I have read fantasy novels that have far less lore surrounding the created world. It's insane, and immensely fascinating.

Great point and its been a while since I beat the main quest: your post is not pointless it points to TES: VI which is a major plus in my book. There are countless scrolls that all tell an enigmatic or a cryptic prophecy just waiting for us to explore thanks for pointing this out!
