If it happens I'll just laugh and laugh while I upgrade my visuals with texture packs on the PC.

This forum is about Skyrim, not platform wars. If you want to discuss PC versus consoles, go elsewhere :nono:

I see a lot of people saying they don't care what console it's released for, as they play pc. As a pc gamer myself, I'm almost ready to agree, but there is one important fact we're overlooking;

Beth creates games with both pc and console in mind, which means the game will ultimately be restricted to the limitations of the console, no matter how powerful your pc gets. This will affect the final outcome of the game.

Will I be angry if the next generation of consoles comes out as early as 2012? No sir. Oblivion was created with the XBox 360 in mind, but they only had final hardware to work with in the final 6 months or so of development. The rest, they had to guess, and what didn't fit had to be dropped (soft shadows on everything?) Basically, more time of final hardware = a better product. If the Elder Scrolls 6 is created for the XBox 720 or whatever, and that system is released in 2012, then Beth will have final hardware to work with for about 80% of the total development time of TES 6. So if TES 6 is released in 2015 or so, we can all enjoy a well adjusted game that was created with minimal guesswork, and we can still enjoy TES 5 in 2011, no further waiting required. Huzzah.

Not on the new consoles. The new consoles will be for more efficient and more powerful (due to lack of tasks being completed at once) than the PC.

Nope. They never were and never will be faster. The partition of resources consumed by backround processes at worst is very small. Only advantage consoles have is that games can be optimized easier, but good PC's will always have already superior HW when consoles are launched, and that negates the optimizing bonus.

I'm pretty sure I've heard somewhere that they won't release any new consoles until 2015 at the earliest. Would I be mad no because Sony and Microsoft wouldn't be completely stupid and not have backward compatability oh wait Sony has already abandoned it on the PS3.

It would hurt PC gamers. Bethesda needs to build the game around current consoles. If they make make a game utilizing more powerful hardware (PC) they would be throwing out their biggest audience, which is the console gamers. OT: No, I wouldn't be mad. Either way it will probably be a good game, and I'll just wait until TES VI. :P

EDIT: DrBondo said this a lot better. But same idea.

My thinking is that Bethesda, armed with the wisdom they've gained from past experiences, would not have announced the release of their next title without getting some kind of assurance from Microsoft, Sony, et al, that they would not be releasing a next gen console any time soon. Either that, or they have been making Skyrim on the next gen tech all along. At least, that is my hope.

The thing most people forget is that the game doesn't have to be better just because it is released for a newer console. It takes time to learn how to optmize the hardware, look at the first 360 games and compare them to some of the ones released today.

Are we really ready for another generation of consoles, now, anyway? Just how much more advanced could a new generation, at this point, be?

imo not quite ready if they were out tomorrow. But by 2012, I expect ready and waiting..

The technology jump would be staggering. If you have seen some of the demos or better used a PC to run some of those showoff game tech demos. Consoles are in the dust a;ready. The next consoles could be blowing your mind with todays tech let alone tech in 2 years into the future.

Nope. If it were released on a brand new console then they'd have the same problem as Oblivion: no clue how to use the hardware yet. They know their way around the tech now.

Also, I wouldn't be able to afford it.

I'd love if the next generation of consoles came out. Hopefully they'll have wifi connecting abilities built into them.

what console other than the old xbox doesn't have wifi built in? even the wii came with it.

I hear this argument all the time, and i can't say I buy it. If you're playing anything at a decent resolution, especially a competitive FPS or something of that ilk, you will need to move your couch or lazy boy really close to the screen to be able to see properly in order to compete. When I see console gamers sitting with their faces 3 feet from their TVs, It really makes me wonder where that argument comes from.

I usually sit about 10 or so feet away from my TV (which is a 52"). I'm not a big FPS player anyhow, so it's not so important. I tend to play sports, 3rd person adventure and the occasional rpg so I'm usually not in a mode where I need to be able to count the pixels. Not that there's anything wrong with gaming of the FPS/Action type, it's just not of interest to me. I also tend to play a lot of Rock Band with friends and family so really, what can I say? I like my PS3.

Oh, and my current desktop has Vista :( So I'm probably going to have to get an updated one soon.

It does depend on the game type. But I can still put a comfy chair in front of my rig, so I still think the argument is something of a moot point. It really comes down to device preference and knowledge.

I can't remember where I saw it, but I remember Microsoft saying they wouldn't be releasing a new Xbox console until 2014/2015, giving the xbox a 10 year shelf life.

Would I get angry? Not likely, as I could care less about the consoles. If those systems were that close to being ready to go you would think we would know about it. Microsoft thinks their box is good for five more years.

It would be nice if the games being released for the PC in the near future would take advantage of tech that the consoles can't use. I kind of feel cheated that I have to play a game that is neutered by old equipment.

i read that as well but then some other articles were speculating that they might release as early as 2012. the kinect and sony's version were test platforms and would be standard on the next generations of consoles. i dont see why they couldnt release the new consoles. you could probably hook up the kinect you have now to them just like you can hook up your old playstation controllers tot he newer ones.

my biggest worry is that we are still going to have seperated interior city cells which means no levitation. no shadows or global lighting or any of that stuff. i just dont want a game that looks a little better than oblivion. i want a game that looks alot better than oblivion and better than my modded oblivion as well.
and yes i want the gameplay to improve as well before someon accuses me of only caring about graphics and not gameplay again.

So you are comparing the use of memory cards and detachable HDDs to PC upgrading? Jeez man, you should think twice before posting.

With HDDs you only improve the hard drive storage capacity, which doensn't improve the speed and processing capabilities of the console. When you use a memory card, it's like using a pen-drive. Does a pen-drive makes your PC faster? No it doesnt.

PCs can upgrade their RAM, graphic processing units, central processing units, hard drive capacity, power supply sources, cooling capacity, OS and more. Using detachable HDDs and memory cards is absolutely nothing compared to the PC upgrading capability.

I'm talking about keeping your memory and buying a new console. My Xbox 360 and PC are right accross from each other. For about 130.00 I can make my PC better than my Xbox. I'll do it sooner or later. Maybe for Skyrim. For about 400.00 I can slide my HDD out and get the new Xbox and make it better than my PC. So I can up grade both.

how exactly does upgrading your harddrive on the xbox or even getting the new xbox make it any better than your PC? they didnt improve anything in the new slim versions except for size and making it run cooler and probably more efficiently than the older 360s. other than that its the same machine.

Dude, that doesn't make any sense...

HDDs don't improve your Xbox in anyway but increasing the amount of gigabytes it can store. That doesn't make the Xbox faster or anything.
And what new Xbox are you talking about? Slim? It is the same thing just... slim.
