I think being able to pick an origin would be nice, kinda like in Dragon Age Origins, it offer some slight alterations to gameplay, the first half hour or so would be different.
Off the top of my head I can think of four different origins.
Vault Dweller Origin: *Or from a community built around a Vault.* You were born in a vault community and enjoyed certain benefits many people did not, food, water and an education. But life in this relatively safe community is stifling. You''ve decided to venture off into the wasteland to seek your destiny be that, fame, fortune, power or death.
Wastelander Origin: Like so many others you grew up in the wasteland. Your family hunting for food, grew it if possible and scavanged for supplies on the ruins of the old world. While digging out the ruins of an old roboco building you find a box containing an intact Pipboy.
Raider Origin: You grew up in a raider gang. Your extended family made its living pillaging caravans and travelers. They did whatever was necessary to survive. In the lastest raid they found something of great value. A functioning pipboy. The device fell to you, being the only one left who knew how to read. Your forced to leave your raider clan behind after an attack my mercenaries bent on clensing the wastes of your kind.
Tribal Origin: While many ascribed to build a new on the ruins of the old world. Your people went to and old way of living. While begining your walkabout a tribal right of passage you come upon a dying traveler who gives you his pipboy.
So four origins, each can have a slightly different beginng but all end with you in the sandbox world with the basic tools we expect, some clothes, a gun and a pipboy for maping and inventory management.
