The non-linearity still amazes

Post » Sun Jul 19, 2009 10:48 pm

With so many games these days that go from A to Z, it does amaze me how much thought, time and writing went into NV. So much branching off, quests beginning/ending while others end/fail, the factions, the different endings. Amazing really.

That's Fallout for ya.

Or at least, since Fallout 2. Fallout 1 was pretty linear... But you know what I mean.

OH IT'S THIS APPRECIATION THREADS AGAIN, GOD KILL ME NOW

just kidding, the writing is indeed amazing! the only thing that svcks about FNV is that when I started playing it, I couldn't enjoy other games any more because FNV makes them look so bad, lol

yup... BGS/obs have raised the bar so high that 90% of other games sort of just svck.

and why mass effect gets so much praise is beyond me.. ME2 was a freakin corridor shooter but is called an RPG? does not compute.

This many times! But it's the same with games like Call of Duty. It's gone downhill a while now in terms of quality. Pretty much the whole game industry. But enough about that, back to how awesome NW is!

I was playing today, and I discovered a Legion camp where two Powder Gangers were tied up around a camp fire. I killed the Legion soldiers as well as the Gangers, and I failed a quest somehow. The sheer quantity of quests is amazing, and how they are tied together with reputation and progress in the main questline is beyond me.

Just to point out, the two Pee-Gangers were to be released in a quest. But who wants to help convicts?

Yeah, I know. I wiped most of them out at the NCRCF though.

EDIT: Spelling.

Mass Effect was a awesome game.....people who only played ME2 on PS3 have no idea what they missed out on...with that said, you're dead right about ME2. They removed much of what made Mass Effect great solely to pander to the COD fanbois. I'm inclined to blame EA, Mass Effect isn't the first franchise that went to hell once EA got thier grubby mitts on it....i'll never forgive them for what they did to Mercenaries 2.

I'm finally playing ME1 now, and even it is only a tiny fraction the RPG that NV is. It's pretty fun, and the writing is good, but it does a lot of stopping for a cut scene, then ending the cut scene with your characters in a combat position that you/your combat-master character would never place yourself in. That aspect is kind of annoying and contrived.

The open world style and writing of Fallout does blow most other games out of the water. Being able to order your followers to "Get behind some friggin' COVER, F.F.S.!!!" like in ME would be such a wonderful addition to Fallout gameplay.

Its not the fact that its not linear that amazes me, its the fact that THERES OVER 9000!!!!!!! Quests. Every named character is either involved in a quest or starts their own quest. Ridiculous.

Well, some of the quests are pretty brief. But you're right, this is a game where you can go anywhere, do anything, support (or slaughter) anyone. FO3 was similar. I look forward to the next game in the series.

The quest writing in NV is well done no doubt. Feel like I'm playing a role, instead of one forced upon my character.

the writing is good, no doubt, the story is very short, the problem with new vegas is the static/non dynamic world of the map area itself. but yeah dialogue and how they did npcs was good, how they did the story was good even though the story itself is just mediocre.

yea there is a lot of quests but theres not a lot of thought went into most of them. alot of them are pretty pathetic, so its not that amazing when you look at it that way. I prefer quality over quantity.
I agree with WEST. The main story about the dam and stuff......wasnt very interesting

Guess that's why they planned a story for Ulysess and the Courier.

Yeah, I am still amazed :D The story was one of the best I have ever seen, and it totally blows FO3 out of the water.

But, the best fact was how the story wrapped around what I did.

The open world games that Bethesda creates, adn NV along side Obsidian, just stops me from playing most other games. I was going to by Homefront and Resistance 3, but now Im contemplating not.

And yes the openness and non-linearity of this game is the best.

Yeah, the non linearity is what makes NV and other Fallout games so replayable.

I've played FO2 for 11.5 years. (Started when I was 9 years old. :D )
Played FO1 for around 6 years.
Played FO3 for 800+ hours. (Least favorite as a Fallout game but as a game on it's own merits it's quite awesome.)
New Vegas 300+ hours. (On hiatus so I don't overplay it before the DLC's come out.)

I don't think there is any other franchise that has kept me playing it for so long.
New Vegas needs some fixing though, it's quest and story is awesome due to it's non-linearity but the game world is so static that everything has become far too predictable for me to enjoy, so I'm on hiatus until DLC's come out or until they add some form of random encounters/leveled enemies into the game.

Have to agree on that. Much of the cool stuff (books, magazines, globes, some of the unique weapons etc) should have been placed more randomly. If each item had 20-50 unique locations it could appear at, it would make exploring equally important on the following playthroughs instead of knowing exactly where to go to get them (the ones you *did* find anyway). Those little location triangles shouldn't be needed, at least not in hardcoe mode. If not, then increase the world size significantly (best option for me, as I think the world is just waaaay too small and cramped up for its content) or reduce the sensitivity by a lot (you basically have to be pretty close to have it marked with a triangle).

I want to have the possibility to find number of locations in the thousands, not around 200 which I can "find" most of even without fast traveling.

This. More dynamic encounters would be great, and a bit of scaled enemies...
