The Nuke

Post » Sun May 23, 2010 3:57 am

When I destroyed Megaton with Nuke I...WAS...DISAPPOINTED!!!
Yeah, it's a well made cool-looking explosion.
But It's way too small for being a Nuke.

Anyone agrees?
This is thing what have been in my mind and I would like to know do anyone share it with me.

EDIT:

Looks like there's a little mistake: I know there's a lot of different kind of nukes but when I explode one of them in a game, I like if it's one of the powerful ones so there is one hellova explosion.
Whoa, lot of "ones" in that edit :D

Yeah it the explosion was way too small for a nuke. The worst part is that somebody survived the blast.....Moira Brown!! the most annoying character in the whole game. It was not realistic at all.

It was a tactical nuke so it was a "real" nuke. Imagine a couple of thousands of those raining down on the landscape. There are more powerful nukes in the game though. They have ICBM's as well but that particular one was from a downed plane

it was a nuke that lasted 200 years it was probably stale. What I was disappointed in is you couldn't blow up that warehouse full of nukes

Even if it was supposed to be a tacnuke and therefore had a smaller yield, I still would've thought it should've flattened what was left of Springvale and the school.

I thought it looked cool. Yeah it was a little small but hey, it WAS over 200 yrs old. and i agree that it should have leveled springvale and the school. Ah, well. There's always New Vegas!

And I hate Moira Brown as well. When i went back and found she had survived, I felt like I'd blown it up for NOTHING! Killed her annoying ass, then posed over the body like a big game hunter.

Pretty underwhelming, but what the hey. I prefer giving Burke the Black Widow treatment and reading his drooling love letters anyway. Or if I'm a man, slipping a live grenade into the pocket of his natty little suit.

well, look at it this way. if it was a really good nuke half of the capitol wasteland would be gone.

If not more.

I always don't blow it up. I hate Burke, and I never really liked Tenpenny Tower. Also, I'm a good guy on this playthrough.

You can still trade. She doesn't realize that the town just went boom and that she is a ghoul until you tell her.

That doen't make any sense, it shouldn't matter how old it is, nuclear dacay doens't invoke a corresponding drop in blastyield over time, the bomb just works or it doesn't. And if it does, i won't matter how old it is, it wil simply create the same destruction and devastation it would have if it were detonated directly after it's construction. Nuclear bombs, both fission and fusion, are all detonated the same way, namely by detonating a series of explosives carefully positioned around the fissionmaterial, which, if constructed correctly will invoke an instand and equally distributed compression untill it reaches critical mass and explodes with the typical effects of any nuclear weapon, massive destruction, radiation and heat.

if u blow up megaton and have already discovered underworld, u can send moira there and still trade/complete wasteland survival guide, she wanders around the first and second floors, and wont trade during nighttime.

Firstly the bomb is in a crater and simple solid ground can absorb a lot blast power, most of the energy would have been pushed up

Also,

With old construction material a fizzle is a possibilty

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fizzle_(nuclear_test)

And lastly FO is not reality freindly in general

Well, its theoratically possible that due to the aging of the fissionmaterial's surrounding construction it would still detonate but produce a lower blastyield, this however is extremely unlikely. De jure you are right, but de facto my statement that the bomb will either work or not is much more probable. The only example's of a lower blastyield caused by constructionfailure doesn't list higher than 5 on that wikipediapage, while over twoTHOUSAND nuclear weapons were detonated on the nevada testsite by the U.S. alone . So the megatonbomb from fallout really has been an extraordinary exception.

In Clancy's "The Sum of All Fears" something like that happens. A terrorist nuke expected to yield 500 kilotons of explosive power instead only yields about 12, because of an error made in the bomb's construction process. I would think that radioactive or explosive decay would also reduce the yield of a bomb.

On the other hand, Burke knew pretty much how powerful the blast was going to be: enough to wipe out Megaton, but not to affect Tenpenny Tower.

As i said we're talking extreme eceptions here, it cóuld be possible, but it's profoundly unporbable, a statement which is only enforced by your own remarks about burke.
