The Oblivion Roleplaying Ideas
Thread
Last Updated: February 07, 2011

With Skyrim coming out, I think a lot of us are returning to Morrowind and Oblivion in anticipation. However, there's only so many times you can play through the normal way before you start getting bored. This thread is to post your ideas to unique and fun ways to roleplay as various types of characters.

This thread is inspired by and meant to be an extended version of a previous thread:
http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/939912-oblivion-character-database/ by Mr. Oblivion
Since the main thread is no longer updated and it has become quite old and dated, and because I feel like some additional things should be included to help promote the roleplaying atmosphere, I figured a new thread was in order.

"Dremora" requested by Velorien.

Have a specific type of character you want to play as but just can't think of anything interesting to do with them? Post a request and I'll add it here!

Please copy and paste the following template for all submissions for the ease of the reader! Be as descriptive as possible!

---------------
Explanation:
---------------
Title: The title of the character (i.e. Necromancer, Vampire Hunter, etc.)
Lore Friendly?: Yes or no? Playing as a Robot character is not lore friendly, but a reprogrammed Dwemer Centurion could be!
Recommended Race (if any): If a modded race is best, please try to also include one of the 10 vanilla races for the sake of console users, if possible.
Recommended Birthsign (if any): Which birthsign, if any, will be most useful for your character?
Recommended Class/Name of Custom Class: The class the player should pick, or the name of a created custom class.
Attributes: The two primary attributes
Major Skills: You do not need to list all 7 unless there is a good reason for each one.
1. Alchemy
2. Athletics
3. Armorer
4. Your choice
5. Your choice
6. Your choice
7. Your choice

Description/What to do:
Explain the point of roleplaying as this character, as well as specific things for the character to do while playing as him.

Roleplaying Restrictions:
How in-depth should the roleplaying go? For example, roleplaying as a Beggar might have the player required to eat at least one meal per day and sleep every night.

Recommended Activities:
The idea is only half of it, we need something to do with this character! For example, being the Count or Countess of a city sounds fun, but if you don't know what to do, then you're just stuck sitting on a throne all day. List various activities to do during the day or quests to complete. Expand on your ideas! This should be one of the biggest explanations along with the description!

Factions to Join (if any):
Some characters just shouldn't be in any of the vanilla factions, but they are vital to other characters.

Recommended Mods (if any):
Some characters are very reliant on mods. Playing as a Lich isn't going to be very fun when you only have the default races and no mods, especially when there are mods that allowed you to become a Lich! List any mods here that you know will enhance the roleplaying experience for this specific character.

Any Additional Notes:
For anything that doesn't quite fit anywhere else.

Two very fun mods that enhance the roleplaying experience are http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=6239 and, for those with Shivering Isles, http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=10150. They allow your player to perform specific animations, such as eating, drinking, reading, and many many other things.

Title: Arena Combatant
Lore Friendly?: Yes
Recommended Race (if any): Your choice!
Recommended Birthsign (if any): Your choice - something useful for combat
Recommended Class/Name of Custom Class: "Combatant" custom class.
Attributes: Strength and Endurance (varies depending on if you want to use Melee or Magic)
Major Skills:
1. Block
2. Athletics
3. Acrobatics
4. Blade or Blunt or Marksman or Hand-to-Hand
5. Armorer
6. Heavy or Light Armor
7. Your choice - Restoration/Alchemy/Destruction? or something else

Description/What to do:
You are a Combatant in the Arena...or, you will be soon. First, you have to join. No need to rush into things, the Redguard and Argonian outside of the Arena are training just to be eligible to enter, so you should, too. Watch them train, train near them or on the other side of the Arena. Jump in place to work on Acrobatics--you want to be able to dodge effectively! Do laps around the Arena as part of your training. When you finally join, it's time to start competing. Talk to the Blue Team Gladiator and the Yellow Team Champion each time you rank up. Decide if you just want to get the rank of Champion or if you want to challenge the Gray Prince for his title. Also decide whether or not you want to do the quest for the Gray Prince first. Remember, it will cause him to not fight back and remove any challenge from the final fight!

Roleplaying Restrictions:
  • One fight a day at most! Don't wear yourself out.
  • Use the difficulty slider to make each fight challenging -- no easy fights allowed!
  • Arena combatants need to train, get at least one level before each fight. This will place you at level 20 before you fight the Gray Prince.

Recommended Activities:
Since you don't want to do more than one fight a day, there are many things you can do with your time off.
  • First off, know your motivation! Does your character just want fame and glory, or is he/she just in it for the money? Maybe your character is trying to impress someone he/she has a crush on. Spend your free time (and your money!) doing things that are relevant to your motivation. Visit the person your character is trying to impress, buy gifts for him/her and leave them in their house. Or place bets on Arena matches. Support the Blue Team!
  • If your character wants to be the best, come up with various different training methods. Punch the punching bag and swing your weapon at the dummy in the Bloodworks. Swim in the mote around the Imperial City. Run laps around the Arena. Be creative!
  • Relax in the King and Queens Tavern or some place similar. Make small talk with some of the others there. Maybe spend the night in The Bloated Float, only to stumble into the quest http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Oblivion:An_Unexpected_Voyage!
  • Buy some combat-related books from the First Edition such as Manual of Arms or Manual of Armor.
  • There are two tables in the Arena that have various tools on them, make use of them. After a fight with someone who shot a bunch of arrows into your armor, remove your armor and place it on the table. Use the tools to pretend you're removing the arrows or repairing the holes they made. (Use default "Z" on PC to move objects around) (Making use of the Actors In Madness mod will give you access to the blacksmithing animation, it looks good if you stand above your armor!)
  • Jumping and running and swinging at a dummy is nice and all, but it's not raising your combat skills! Go out and search caves, tombs, and Ayleid ruins. After all, you can use whatever shield, sword, helmet, and jewelry you want in the Arena, look for some nice things! Be selective as to what enemy types you face. Wildlife is fine, but maybe your character doesn't fancy fighting off hordes of undead. Don't want to get killed outside of the Arena!
  • After becoming Champion or Grand Champion, maybe it's time to consider retirement. Start saving up for a nice house, such as the one in Chorrol or Skingrad.
  • Consider heading to Boethia's Shrine in the east of Cyrodiil to compete in his Tournament of Ten Bloods. Be a champion in the eyes of Cyrodiil AND a Daedric Prince! Use Goldbrand to fight in Arena competitions, or the excellent arrows found on the bodies of the other Chosen.

Factions to Join (if any):
The Arena!

Recommended Mods (if any):
The http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=5296 will make it so Agronak gro-Malog is not fixed at Level 10, and will be a more appropriate challenge if you choose to fight him without doing his quest. If you don't want to use this, moving the difficulty slider closer to the right will make him a more formidable adversary.
You might also consider looking up mods that extend the Arena after you're the Grand Champion so you can fight more than just Minotaurs.
I think some of the mods that rebuild Kvatch have working Arenas, might consider looking into one of those to extend gameplay time.

Any Additional Notes:
Sometimes, if you spend too much time in the Bloodworks, the Blue Team Gladiator's bow will break and he'll drop it on the floor. Pick it up, repair it for him, and drop it. He's really friendly, might as well return the favor!

Title: Shadowfoot, eventually the nameless hero.
Lore Friendly?: Yes
Recommended Race (if any): Dark Elf
Recommended Birthsign (if any): Apprentice- need the magicka for my mage
Recommended Class/Name of Custom Class: "Sorcerer" custom class.
Attributes: Strength and Endurance (varies depending on if you want to use Melee or Magic)
Major Skills:
1. Illusion
2. Destruction
3. Alchemy
4. Blade - -- picked it up fencing against the Count's son.
5. Alteration
6. Sneak
7. Security

Description/What to do:
I hate how the main quest is soo urgent, making side quests seem stupid. Who runs around picking herbs when the oblivion gates are consuming tamriel. So when I get out of jail, I RP as though this is before I went to jail and the emperor was assasinated and only start the main quest when I have got to the point where my char is again sent to jail.

my char was born in Cheydenhall. The son of the Countess's Handmaiden. His mother was killed though when he was but three or four (by dark brotherhood, as one of the first warning to the Count, but my char doesn't know this) He was raised in the castle as a servant/charity case, but was taught how to read by the castle mage at an early age.. When he was not stealing books (mostly on magic) to read, or not working, the count's son would force him to join his stupid "adventures." The character is very very well read and became a thief and an illusionist at an early age for the sole purpose of stealing books.

He ran off from Cheydinhall around age twenty and joined the mages guild under a different name, to further pursue his interests and got to the level of assosciate. He has also come to contact with the theives guild and is a follower of the gray fox.. He has a dislike of titled rulers and wishes to bring knowledge and education to the masses, and as such only steals from the very wealthy and mostly to pay for his education. Atleast in the beginning.

Roleplaying Restrictions:
No armor.
No guilds except mage and thieves
If lucien tries to recruit you, kill him or paralyze him and run away.

Recommended Activities:
Reading books, stealing from rich, giving money to beggars, helping people around town for altruistic reasons.. Killing racists, like the countess of Leyawin and other unjust rulers.

Factions to Join (if any):
mages guild
Thieves Guild

Recommended Mods (if any):

Any Additional Notes:
He gets caught and sent to prison during the mission to steal the elder scroll. After the main quest he steals the scroll, because as the champion of cyrodil no one suspected anything when he entered the elder council's building.. And he finishes the theives guild quest and only a few days to weeks after gaining unimaginable fame as the Champion, becomes a nameless stranger as he dons the gray cowl.

Title: Mages Guild Necromancer
Lore Friendly?: Yes
Recommended Race (if any): Any race, Altmer or Breton might be good for more magicka.
Recommended Birthsign (if any): The Mage
Recommended Class/Name of Custom Class: Necro/Necrotic (Necromancer doesn't fit) custom class
Attributes: Intelligence/Willpower
Major Skills:
1. Conjuration
2. Alchemy
3. Destruction
4. Illusion
5. Alteration
6. Restoration
7. Your choice

Description/What to do:
You are a Mages Guild member with a deep interest in Necromancy. However, the Mages Guild has still banned Necromancy in the guild, so you must act in secret. You are not, however, in league with Mannimarco. You are still a friend of the Guild, where as he is an enemy of the Guild, and thus an enemy of you. Decide if you want to raise to the esteemed rank of Arch-Mage or just gain access to the Arcane University to continue your studies in Necromancy.

Roleplaying Restrictions:
None, really. You are a Mage and have freedom to do what you want.

Recommended Activities:
  • As soon as you can, obtain Necromancer's Robes. Do not wear these robes in public, and especially not in the presence of another Mages Guild member! If you find you've accidentally done so, intentionally get yourself expelled from the guild, then do the quest to become a member again.
  • Start off attempting to perform Necromancy on Bandits in Forts and caves. Use a dagger to pretend you are slicing up their bodies and cast lightning spells in an attempt to raise their corpses. This will obviously not work, but failure is part of the learning process your character must go through!
  • Get conjuration spells for every type of Undead: Zombie, Headless Zombie, Skeleton, Skeleton Guardian, Skeleton Hero, Skeleton Champion, Ghost, Faded Wraith, Gloom Wraith, Lich.
  • When given the Finger of the Mountain quest, go against the Guild's wishes and obtain the spell for yourself.
  • Read books in the Arcane University. Find any information on undead that you can.
  • Focus a lot of attention on a different school of magic. Train destruction by throwing fireballs at the targets in the Arcane University. Make it seem to the other Mages Guild members that you are not interested in Necromancy and are instead pursuing other goals.
  • Listen to the lectures given to the other Apprentices and make use of the information. Visit runestones and doomstones and attempt to study and interact with them. Return for different lectures.
  • Buy the Benirus Manor, only to discover it is haunted and cursed! Remove the curse and keep the Manor as your new home. Use the secret room in the basemant as the new base for your study into Necromancy.
  • Collect any loose bones you see sitting around in caves and forts. Place all of these bones in the coffin in the corner of the Benirus Manor basemant as a collection of body parts to experiment on later.
  • Experiment with poisons and other alchemical potions.
  • Make a bunch of Black Soul Gems. Get a Soul Trap spell and start trapping the souls of men and mer for your studies.
  • Defeat Mannimarco and obtain the King of Worm's Robe and the Staff of Worms. Now that you are the Arch-Mage, tell Apprentices to follow you and take them back to the Benirus Manor basemant. Kill them and interact with their corpse. Cast spells, attempt to raise them. Use the Staff of Worms to make them a temporary follower once more.
  • Make spells in the University of longer-lasting Undead summons. Use these to pretend you've raised the Skeleton of someone's body you have been working with.
  • If you aren't using mods, have your Necromancy ritual go like this: Don the Necromancer's Robes and Hood. Place a body in the large runic circle in front of the altar in the Benirus Manor basemant. Place things like nightshades, human hearts, skulls, and mort flesh in the surrounding four circles. Take a moment to study the Tome of Unlife. Cast a lightning spell on the corpse. Summon a long-lasting Skeleton. Voila! Take the time to study it before disposing of the Undead. Can't have him getting free and bringing the attention of the guard to your manor.
  • Once you're the Arch-Mage, consider bringing Necromancy back to the guild. Collect Necromancer's Robes and drop them in various places throughout the Arcane University and in the Guilds around Cyrodiil. Wear the King of Worms' Robe and the Staff of Worms in public. Place black soul gems anywhere that you see other soul gems in the guilds.

Factions to Join (if any):
Mages Guild

Recommended Mods (if any):
http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=36595 is great. It requires you to cut up corpses with any blade weapon and collect body parts as well as leather patches and thread. Once you have the materials you need, you can create a zombie or skeleton corpse, then you use a lightning spell or other appropriate spells to raise it. It will follow and fight for you or just wait where ever you put it. Great fun, and it allows you to actually perform Necromancy instead of just summoning undead and pretending!

http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=14200 changes the final battle with Mannimarco, making him seem much more of the god he is supposed to be rather than just a simple avatar of that god. It makes the robes you gain from him much cooler. It also offers a hood that will make you appear to have a skull for a face. Consider using the Tome of Unlife to make yourself into a lich using this hood! Note: This makes the final battle with Mannimarco extremely difficult. Difficult to a fault, perhaps. Do not attempt without being very powerful yourself.

Any Additional Notes:
Have fun!

As always, I′d like to provide http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1082413-roleplaying/page__view__findpost__p__15769275__fromsearch__1. Maybe some of you can get one or two ideas from that.

Return to IV - Oblivion
