The old "Morrowind v.s. Oblivion" argument

Post » Fri Dec 02, 2011 2:51 pm

When Skyrim is released, I wonder how many people are going to turn the tables to Oblivion v.s. Skyrim? People are never satisified, no matter what developers try to do. I mean, even I will whole-heartedly defend Morrowind over Oblivion, but I highly doubt the same is going to be said in comparison of Oblivion to Skyrim. Even with the little information/teaser video we have, it already seems entirely more epic than Oblivion.

If anything, it would be Morrowind v.s. Skyrim.

I have a strong feeling that Skyrim will blow both out of the water.

It happens with the release of every new ES game. Daggerfall fans complained about the changes in Morrowind. Morrowind fans complained about the changes in Oblivion. Oblivion fans will complain about any and all changes made in Skyrim. That's what being a fan is all about... finding as many faults as possible in the things you love.

Happen "again"? It never stopped happening. People have been speaking with certainty that Skyrim will be so much better/worse than the other games since long before it was even announced.

Me too! I've had that feeling since it was even hinted at :D

I don't know about others, but I have a feeling that I would not be disappointed this time, or more accurately I will be disappointed, because I have a lot of great ideas for a great RPG but few of them would be in Skyrim.

But on the whole, I would feel that they have done their best, and will be content with it, because they would not repeat their glaring mistakes with Oblivion, and without those mistakes, a BGS game is equivalent with a masterpiece.

And I know and I am resigned about the fact that in the wealth of lore and complexity of dialogs and quests, none will reach the Morrowind level, because voiced dialogs will prevent that, but it would not result in Skyrim not being a masterpiece.

Yes, yes it will happen again.

I know for one I'll be comparing it to both Morrowind and Oblivion. Whether or not I voice those opinions remains to be seen.

Whether or not it stacks up against Morrowind though, I'm still going to play it and most probably love it. I've done the same with Oblivion.

Perhaps it will be "Morrowind vs. Oblivion vs. Skyrim?"

I can't say I that I was disappointed when Oblivion was released, it was just in far contrast to what Morrowind represented to me. Oblivion was a great game in it's own right, but Morrowind was a much better game in regards to the depth of story, variability of landscape and NPC's, and such a rich backstory. Oblivion was very pretty to look at, and had some cool quests, but it just didn't deliver the same experience as Morrowind did. So while Oblivion was not a disappointment, it was a degredation in game quality due to the constraints presented to the design team (HW uncertainties, etc.,).
With the amount of time they have spent on PC's and consoles (Oblivion, Fallout 3/NV etc.,), I'm sure Skyrim will be leaps and bounds over what Oblivion was.
I just hope the UI isn't as bad as Oblivion's was, and the consenus seems to be the same

Oh god it's happening right here!
Perhaps it will be "Morrowind vs. Oblivion vs. Skyrim?"

And at the end someone jumps in and says Daggerfall is the best of all, and all sides will agree on is that Arena wasn't the best game in the series.

Who can't wait for:

Morrowind vs. Oblivion vs. Skyrim vs. TES VI vs. TES VII vs. TES VIII vs. TES IX vs. TES X? :P

Skyrim will probably correct Oblivions mistakes, hopefully without reinstating Morrowinds mistakes.

I don't think it's gonna end, in most of the OB vs MO debates it's not about what's actually true, it's more about who gets the last word, some people just can't handle if things don't correlate with their view of things. The quickest way to get someone to not think about what is actually discussed, is to write that one of them is featured in one of the games, and people will than vote on principle rather than thought.

With the sheer amount of Morrowind fans here it will most definitely become MW v Skyrim.

If the game is good enough, and truly manages to incorporate the best of both "styles" of play, it could become a moot point (here's hoping). Of course, there's always room for "adjustments", and while complaining generally won't get you anywhere, it gives you something to do while you're not playing the game.

TES X is so dumbed down. They only removed the virtual mindlink pain sensors because the console players were whining about them.

This is the answer to the question.

Or rather, finding as many faults as possible in the things that try to replace the things you love, while lovingly ignoring the faults of the original. ;)

Oh it's an absolute certainty.

I try to enjoy each TES game on it's own merits though. I don't like to compare them too much.

This is almost like a law of nature. I, along with many others, predicted that quite a few Oblivion fans who now are offended by the critique from Morrowind fans will probably complain just as much over Skyrim "not being like Oblivion". It's inevitable.

Of course it is going to happen - probably even before Skyrim is released.

I shudder at the thought of the moderator work, babysitting it, editing, deleting, a few slaps via PM - and that will only be the first page. :D
