The Only Acceptable Stereotype

Post » Sun May 23, 2010 8:43 am

Maybe the Irish don't get mad about it, because they realize how true it is?
Or maybe, they don't realize it's a stereotype at all, they think they are just being accurately described? Every Irish person I've ever known (not a lot) has been someone who goes to pubs every week at least twice.
Just sayin'.

Hate to break it to you....but that's just not true. Not all Irish people fit the stereotype. As someone of strong Irish heritage (And not the American "I have a great grandfather who was half Irish" type, the my mother is Irish and I spent my childhood holidays with family in Ireland) I'll be honest, I'm pretty offended by the notion that I have to fit a preset idea of what an Irish person should do based on what is inherently a racist stereotype.

Well the Irish accent is extremely recognizable (to me at least), having to make the character a drunk so people will recognize he's Irish just seems like over-kill and a strengthening of the stereotype.

I do recognize all the other stereotypes that are used, but honestly it just seems like they aren't used nearly as much as the Irish one.

Going to the pub twice a week would merit such a stereotype? Going to the pub twice a week isnt exactly very often.

To that degree it probably just depends on where you live, or the origin of the source material. I doubt the way Americans and the French view each other is as prevalent in other countries. Irish stereotypes may well be more common in Germany, I have no idea. In those cases the culture itself is going to be much more attached to the stereotype, and take a lot longer to discard it or acknowledge it as wrong. Not a lot to be done about it, I imagine.

I don't think anyone is more acceptable than the other. You hear them form everyone unless its on tv or radio etc.In fact being mostly German ,and its noticeable that I am,I hear kraut ad nazi a lot from people. Not to insult me but as a joke.

Oh, as someone married to someone half-German, the "Nazi" jibe winds me up no end. I mean, people don't even engage the tiniest bit of brain ...

Common TV/Movie stereotypes:
Americans are fat/stupid/obnoxious
Russians are big bruiser commie bastards
Brits are upper class holier-than-thou snobs stuck in a Victorian era mindset
French are arrogant cowards

I think the thing is about the bits that are true.

Americans tend to be "loud", on the whole, because of the wide "personal spaces" that are allowed because of the low population density. I once heard about a guy from Texas talking to somone from (densely populated) Japan. Because the latter's personal space area was much smaller than the American's, time-lapse camera footage showed the Tokyo resident inadvertently chasing the Texan round the room as the latter sought to preserve his personal space. Americans like to stand at the opposite ends of the rooms to each other and shout, unless they're from New York, which has about the same population density as southern England.

As for 2002, 77% of the British population were "middle class" (not "upper class"), and the British think the French secretly pity them for not being French.

I think the only Celtic stereotype that annoys me is the one about redheaded people being less attractive than other people, which is http://cdn2.team-twilight.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/bryce-dallas-howard.jpg http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc4/hs162.snc4/37455_404774817716_564227716_4484568_839269_n.jpg http://www.hollywoodtrailers.net/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/alicia-witt4.jpg.

Yeah, but the Irish stereotype of the drunken joker is the only stereotype that is still seen as alright to use on t.v. or videogames, just look at the only Irish person in Red Dead Redemption.

And the Welsh guy was a complete [censored] and would "steal an acorn from a blind sow, then kick her or squealing", who just used the word boyo. Also friends with the French. Atleast Irish didnt have blatant lies for a steryotype. :P
Glad they stayed away from any sheep jokes though.

The following is a paid program. The following stereotypes do not represent the ideas or beliefs of the employees of Seti Inc.

British-snobby tea drinkers with bad teeth
French-snobby, arrogant snail eaters
Americans(U.S.)-lazy, ignorant, fat people
*Southern American(U.S.)-rednecks
*African-Americans-sport-loving rappers
Irish-alchoholics
Italians-the mafia
Mexicans-illegal immigrants
Canadians-people who live in a country that does nothing
Russians-vodka-drinking brutes
Arabs-terrorists
Muslims-terrorists
Central Asians-Arabs(more of a widely believe falsehood about how to classify people from areas such as Afghanistan, for example)
East Asians-smart, short people
Indians-doctors or 7/11 owners
Jews-greedy people with big noses

All of these seems widely accepted.

*falls under American

I DO NOT BELIEVE ANY OF THEM.

Isn't that in itself, saying "Americans are the worst at making stereotypes"...a stereotype?

Though this is about stereotypes. Not, you know, reality. Brits are often portrayed as acting more classy than their American counterparts (well, unless it's Peter Capaldi from http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1226774/)

Here's a good one: Stereotypical food commercials are always the most blatant about national stereotypes. Italian pasta, Mexican tacos, etc etc.

Theres a certain authenticity that goes with mexican tacos or italian pasta. If they try to act like nationalists with their food, it proves to the consumer that they're a legitimate Italian pesto manufacturer or a Mexican salsa distributer.

I'd rater eat food thinking its authentic rather than knowing its been pumped out of some factory in the Denver. (that was the first place that came to my head...I don't even know what state thats in.. Colorado maybe?)

Ahh...who am I kidding. I'll eat whatever's in front of me.

Well im Irish, and I mean real Irish, not an American who has never been to Ireland but claims the status :P

The only Irish person in a videogame that sounded legit was the guy from Bioshock. The dude in Red Dead was a pretty good representation of the accent in that time period though.

Now onto the steriotype...I have not had an alcoholic drink in about two years, and unfortunately that is pretty rare in my age group.People here, just like the Brits, drink until oblivion rises up to snatch them into blurryland. For some though, one sniff of a wine cork will have them slide under the table.

It does in fact bother me a little that our only achievement as a nation, is to become such an annoyance that the Brits had to leave, and become world renowned for being drunken sots.

The plus side is the line people say about us...To an Irishman, a stranger is just a friend you havent met yet.Im sorry to tell you all that this is far from true. You will never meet more awkward and pent up people anywhere in the world. Its just that the friendly ones(like me) travel and actively want to meet new people.

Now wheres my lucky charms...

Germans are secretly still nazi sympathizers
And it goes on and on...

Those are way outdated. Its more like:

Americans invade stuff
Russians drink a lot and wear tight speedos
Brits live in 1984
French pour milk down the drain and riot a lot
Germans are childish people who laugh at fart jokes and steal sun loungers.

Yeah, I know some Irish people at uni, it being in Liverpool where most Irishmen in the world live. They're an odd bunch. :P Always sound depressed, even when they're not. These are Ulstermen though, so that might have something to do with it. My Great-Grandmother was from Waterford, your stereotypical psycho Irishwoman.
