The Only Acceptable Stereotype

Post » Sun May 23, 2010 11:53 am

Stop it you! We must maintain the illusion!

What? Hmmm...I think there's something fishy here...

What ho old bean!

Hahahaha *claps hands* what am I saying, everything's fine.

I think some of you know how much I'm against stereotypes so I'll just stay out of the conversation.

Yes well, one of your kind would say that.

I just realised I don't know enough about Expresate to think up a reasonably offfensive epithet.

Shouldn't you be out fencing tire irons?

Why is it that even though all other stereotypes are seen as extremely distasteful and rude, the stereotype of Irish people is still acceptable and widely used for a quick laugh?

Wrong. My entire family is Irish. We consistently get pissed off with such stereotypes. Its only acceptable for the people who use them, because they dont have an origional thought in their head.

Atleast when they get drunk they remember one thing, pinkey finger.

Well im Irish, and I mean real Irish, not an American who has never been to Ireland but claims the status :P

The only Irish person in a videogame that sounded legit was the guy from Bioshock. The dude in Red Dead was a pretty good representation of the accent in that time period though.

Now onto the steriotype...I have not had an alcoholic drink in about two years, and unfortunately that is pretty rare in my age group.People here, just like the Brits, drink until oblivion rises up to snatch them into blurryland. For some though, one sniff of a wine cork will have them slide under the table.

It does in fact bother me a little that our only achievement as a nation, is to become such an annoyance that the Brits had to leave, and become world renowned for being drunken sots.

The plus side is the line people say about us...To an Irishman, a stranger is just a friend you havent met yet.Im sorry to tell you all that this is far from true. You will never meet more awkward and pent up people anywhere in the world. Its just that the friendly ones(like me) travel and actively want to meet new people.

Now wheres my lucky charms...

Meh you did more that us, we didnt seem to do anything, ok mines, drink thats about it. We are dwarves. I am still worried how the sheep steryotype started though.

Yes well, one of your kind would say that.

After some deeper thought I remember a few fellow Dubliners who speak with more of an American accent then anything else. The girls I hang around with are completely dictated to by American fashion and attitude. My baby brothers want to be U.S soldiers from playing Call of Duty. The internet is a huge part of my everyday life, and no day is complete without coffee.

Give my country ten more years and it will be baby America, with the old stereotype just a story for the grandchildren.

why are people still offended by stereotypes anyways? the definition of a stereotype isn't that everyone matches the stereotype :cheat:

Because being stereotyped is not fun.

Really? If i was going to pick an Army to fight for, it would be the British (not just because I live here), I really fancy the survival rates in the S.A.S.

0.o Thats disturbing, if you dont mind me asking how old are they, for a game to have that much enfluence ?
I hope Ireland dosnt become like America, I like your guys accents too much. Besides I dont find anything interesting about Americans (native americans seem interesting, even though I know nothing about them, but im on about your average american.), now we dont have much culture or interesting things here, but still its mre interesting imo..

The kids are 8 and 7.I would rather they didnt play those games but its not me supplying them.My point is not that they will eventually go and join that army, just that the thought is implanted at a tender age, that a certain country is home of "the good guys", and certain sandy places are the homes of "the bad guys. They told me yesterday that the Russians might come here to kill us all for christ sake!

Now I feel I should stress that I have met many good Americans :P

As for 2002, 77% of the British population were "middle class" (not "upper class")

Nah, that's just snobbish aspirationism. If you can't keep your house without working, you're just working class.

My parents are from Oklahoma and my grandparents are from Arkansas. Believe me, there are without a doubt stereotypes regarding those two states (basically people from Arkansas are inbred hillibillies and using the term "Okie" as a synonym for white trash). I actually got in an argument with my manager shortly after going to work with the company over a page of Arkansas jokes she put on everyone's desk (during the presidency of a certain Arkansan she didn't care for). For the most part they were about how Arkansans are cousin (or sister) marrying idiots. She was standing in the middle of the room reading them off and I kept saying "my family is from there!". After about the third "Oh, they're just funny jokes its nothing personal" I finally got up and left the room. The only person in the office that understood my anger was the African-American girl who's cubicle was next to mine.

Yeah, they're a still plenty of stereotypes and clueless people who toss them around (me included at times).

A LOT of Americans LOVE Ireland, not just the north-easterners. I think it's because of the influx of immigrants we recieved from your country during and after Lincoln's War. Hell, we have old folk songs praising the Irish.

It also helps it's one of the larger ethnic groups that American's descend from.

Yeah, there was a guy in the newspaper that was all up in arms about Anton DuBeke calling his dancing partner a "paki", but his indignance seemed a bit odd when, in the same article, he stated that everyone in the Southern US were "rednecks and crackers". Given the origin of both of those terms,it was a bit odd coming from a socialist.

I sent him an Email, with several links to wikipedia articles on the topic. :P

This is stupid. When I go to America, all I hear is Australian stereotypes. Like "Do you wrestle crocodiles?" and "Do you all wear those cork hat things?". And that's in real life, never mind the media.

Similarly, Australians do the same thing. I'm half-American, so I never hear the end of the "stupid, fat, war-mongering" American jokes. To be fair, though, these are all from other teens, and we love our ignorance...

Stereotypes are can hurt people's feelings, the Scottish stereotypes just annoy me. It's silly how somebody judges an entire country by one person or an event, sure some of them are true, but most are exaggerated or not true at all.
