Am I the only one disappointed that dragons aren't rare?

Post » Tue Aug 31, 2010 7:11 am

but that was how cliff racers became monotonous and ruined the experience of fighting what was a unique enemy back then. dragons won't be showing up every where like cliff racers but even just two at once would ruin them for me at least. they are supposed to be a real ba enemy so if I am able to fight two at once that would only be possible if dragons were nerfed some how or my character had god or demi god powers.

Yeah, but I do think we would encounter 2 of them at once in SOME situations, as they stated they spawn like normal creatures.

I hope their's Dragon Scales that we can collect off the corpse. Then I can make DragonSkin Weapons or Armor.

If you watch the trailer again you will notice that by consuming the soul the flesh of the dragon gets "evaporated" from the body leaving the bones. I can see dragon bones being used for crafting (and would like it to be in) but I don't see the scales if this is truly what happens after you kill a dragon.

But it was too hard and they didnt like that you had to run so they took it out. Hope someone mods this back in...

Hooray...sounds like a level 1 idiot will be able to defeat a leveled dragon because ' they don't like that you have to run'. Apart from dragon fights becoming tedious this is the other problem I see with dragons. To me so far dragons sounds just as annoying as Oblivion Gates (since they were far too common) and just as silly as Oblivion Gates (since even a level 1 guy could defeat the Daedra army attacking Kvatch all on his own). I hope for the best, but I guess it's more reasonable to hope for a mod that fixes what Bethesda will probably do asap.

i don't know that if that means they spawn after a given time whethor or not you killed the last or if they will wait. but by rare it probably means that they will spawn after a certain time whethor or not you killed the last. idk if that means it is possible for there to be two all though it has been said that it is no longer the case, or if it means the one you have not encountered just disapears. I imagine it would be hard to avoid a dragon for too long unless you are doing so intentionally with the map the way it is.

Remember the Big Daddies from Bioshock?
I'm pretty sure they'll be like them.

And comparing them to Oblivion gates is just stupid. Yes, they'll have the same function, but the annoyance factor is different. For an Oblivion gate you needed around 30 minutes of dungeon crawling to close one up, for Dragons you'll fight them for at most 10 minutes.

Truthfully you have no way of knowing that... Most chances are that Beth learned from their mistakes either way. You can see progression and improvement from OB to FO3.
I seriously doubt they'll be THAT easy to defeat.

And by the way, where has it been stated that the canceled the feature for us NOT to fight a couple of dragons at once? Can anyone give me the source?

I was going to say that bgs has been strangely silent about leveled enemies.... but maybe actions speak louder than words. and FO3 was that action.

I don't have the link to the specific article but there was one in which they were talking about at one time the game had more than one dragon at the time and that it really discouraged combat with them so they changed it some how.

It's Dragon themed. Of course they aren't going to be rare. You think a dragon invasion will be with only 2 or 3 spawning dragons each ingame year? Ah..no..

Think of Oblivion. Lots of Daedric gates to Mehrune's realm. Same for Skyrim. Except replace Oblivion gates with dragons.

Oh, I'm sure the randomly spawning dragons will be level scaled. I doubt the Fallout like level scaling will be applied to them, as they're not locked to a single region, but hopefully they'll use a more Morrowind like leveling list, so some lower and higher level dragons may spawn as well.

Also, there are going to be unique dragons that I'll think will have more static level.

I hope they'll answer that question in the fan interview. I simply can't imagine how they're going to do this properly. Because either:

1. Dragons are very hard to defeat (like they should be) and characters with a level lower than 30 (keep in mind that the level range was increased, so it's similar to level 15 in Oblivion) would have no chance against them. This is not what Bethesda has done in any of their previous games, it would mean that you'd have to run away from dragons for the first 50 hours of gameplay. Since you can't even avoid them (like Super Mutant Behemoth or Deathclaws in FO3, which can only be encountered in specific areas you can choose to avoid) and since they're the focus of the main quest and thus relatively common (compared to the creatures in FO3 mentioned above) I think there is zero chance it will be like that.

2. Dragons are leveled to some extent and while a level 1 character will encounter a dragon that is pretty hard to defeat for a level 1 character it will not be too hard to defeat. Which means the same dragon encountered by a level 20 character would be comparable to a mud crab. This is how I fear it will be done and the most likely 'solution'. Which, imo, svcks. If my low level character can defeat a dragon then dragons will become a joke. A rookie adventurer should never be able to defeat one of the most fearsome creatures one can think of and even a mid level character should have a very, very hard time to defeat one.

If there is another solution I didn't think of (or if you have a valid reason to believe that option 1 will be what happens in the game) please tell me.

Why would it svck?

At low level you can kill the weak young dragons, but you still can't take care of the bigger more powerful ones, and I think you'll be able to find some of those too at low level if you look for them.

Hell, I'm pretty sure at the end of the tutorial, you'll have to defeat a dragon yourself...

Beth needs realize that letting the player get his [censored] handed to him once in a while in a great thing

I agree, all games these days are tailored to the "facebook generation" with an average attention span of 5 seconds.
God forbid if a game requires a bit of effort.
I miss the days that finishing a game really felt like an achievement, instead of feeling like you spend another €60 on a game you bought last Friday.

Usually in an RPG "difficult" means impossible at your current level, but I actually prefer it that way; like they did in Morrowind where you sometimes could wander in the wrong place at the wrong time.
It's still better than a game that is so casual and open that you're "free", but it doesn't matter what you do either since everything is the same anyway.

I hope you have to be at least level 20 before you can hope to defeat a dragon, and that you have to defeat and absorb several dragons before you can hope to complete half of the quests in the game.
Yes, it sacrifices some "freedom" but it gives the freedom you have more meaning.

So I guess at low levels for some strange reason only weak, young dragons will appear? That is exactly what I was talking about. If there were a few young dragons mixed in between the majority of advlt dragons I wouldn't mind, but it wouldn't make sense and would feel extremely cheap if 90% of the dragons you encounter at low levels were young dragons. And a level 1 character should not even be able to defeat a young dragon, except for one that just crawled out of his egg maybe.

I think dragons, in order to be challenging should have a static level of say...25 - 35. And, when you finally reach their static level, they are automatically scaled up to be between 4 and 11 levels higher than you at all times. They should also have an innate chance of knocking you off balance, and the ability to ignore a % of your armor as far as dealing damage goes, while lowering all incoming damage by a % as well. They, being dragons should also be able to activate dragon shouts faster than you as well I think.

There are few things that I remember more fondly about my first time through Morrowind than how terrifying Daedric shrines were for my low level character. The first one I encountered was north of Hla Oad, and a flame atronach killed my character without hardly trying. The next time I saw one was near Caldera, and when I came over the top of the hill and first saw it, the hair literally stood up on the back of my neck. I very slowly backed back down the hill and took the long way around the shrine, scared the entire time.

I want to feel that way again playing a TES game. There was a brief moment when I thought that I would when I first went into the Oblivion gate at Kvatch, but then I discovered how weak stunted scamps are and that was it for that.

I really, REALLY hope the first dragon I meet in Skyrim isn't just Skyrim's equivalent of a stunted scamp.....

or hopefully if they are level scaled they are scaled to be above your level by a few. that way you can't just beat them by hack and slash or spell slinging but have very smartly make percise strategies or choices on how to kill them and wasteful movements will put you at a disadvantage. you know, kinda like it would if you were fighting something way bigger than you.

My main concern is that dragons are the new Oblivion Gates. I think many other people here share my sentiments. Bethesda always seems to think 'Oh, we made something that looks really cool, let's rub it into the players face over and over again so there is absolutely no chance he might not get enough of it!'. I'd rather have a few meaningful, cool and fun dragon fights than 100 boring fights. Personally I think that dragons will become pretty annoying in Skyrim unfortunately. The first time you entered an Oblivion Gate it was cool, but now I hate Oblivion Gates and don't even want to play the Ob main quest because of them. I guess that it will be the same with dragons after a while.

Has anyone here played MineCraft? If so, bear with me.

They could be the Creepers of Skyrim.

Every time I see a creeper, I get scared as hell. They said Dragons weren't rare, but that doesn't mean they'll be bloody cliff racers - I'm guessing you'll find one every other time you cross between two towns. It sounds great, so far, and I really trust Bethesda with this one :)

Well, they did say they worked hard on dragons to always be challenging, also when asked, Todd said it was relatively easy for him to beat the dragon because of cheats, he couldn't allow himself to lose at a presentation to the press. He said that normally dragons are VERY hard to fight against, and they are naturally scary.

I hope it's all as he say it is.

And I know what you mean... Morrowind is my favorite game of the seires. It felt just right and hit the spot with everything (almost, except for the battle system) it did. You're right to say that Daedric shrines were one of the most fearsome (and COOL I might add) feature of the game. I remember being afraid getting close to them, I also was afraid going any closer to the Dwemer dungeons and the Ghost Gate xD Such an epic time.
There's no argument about that, I miss that feeling as well.

But after reading so many reviews, especially the one that exists on the first page of the forum atm, I have renewed hope that dragons are actually what Beth says they are. :)

creepers are approachable at any point though, they are not hard, they just cause griefing and you'll die if not careful. MC is not about progressing in level and strength but I get your point. I think they will be rarer than encountering them every other time you leave town, that would make them a nausence if you were doing any thing other than just killing dragons. and there is alot to do in TES.

Waiting for level 20 (basically, half of the game), just to fight our first dragon, the main feature of the game is a really bad idea. I don't want to spend half of the game hiding under every rock when I'm travelling between cities, thinking how will I kill those dragons on high level. I don't say that dragons shouldn't be challenging, or that I shouldn't need to run away ever. I'd like to see dragons that are way too hard to me, but I don't want it to be in the majority, even with dragons on the same level, I should be well prepared and at my full strength to deal with them...

I'd say around level 10s should be able to beat them, with a lot of trouble, then by 25 you can beat them a little easier, and after that they scale. You'll see so many that they'll just overpower them and break the game if done as you said. Sure, they're strong, but it still has to be possible.

I was hoping for a limited number of dragons, possible 30 dragon fights in all. I understand why there are more though, I was just hoping they were a bit more scarce.

thats probably how it will be. too many people wanted dragons so when you give them dragons you can't make them weak but you also can't make them not show up unti way later. same as you can't make them noob murder machines or else people will freak out and say that dragons svck even though its what they wanted.
