Am I the only one disappointed that dragons aren't rare?

Post » Tue Aug 31, 2010 4:44 am

I'm in love with every aspect of the game except for when I learned that Beth has decided to treat dragons as any other creature... I mean, they should be more unique aren't they? And I really don't want to take them as another "Cool at first but annoying later" trend... I kinda hoped they'll be rare, not too rare, but that it would definately feel like a boss fight even after 50 times of fighting them. I was hoping that seeing a dragon is something players should be running towards to, and not from.

It's not that big of a deal but just thought it would be different. I'm interested in seeing if Beth's outtake on dragons is good, and hopefully it is.

I understand your feelings, but I think they very much want it to feel like dragons are going to overwhelm the land unless you stop them. (Sort of like roaming Oblivion Gates in a way)

I dunno, I'm just not too happy with the who dragon thing as a whole... it sets an obvious "best creature" from the get go and doesn't leave much for the imagination whilst exploring

I actually thought they were fun too, but I'm hoping the challenge of a dragon fight will keep my interest up a little more. Near the end of OB I started to avoid any gates that weren't necessary to the MQ.
Then again, the ability to learn more shouts by getting their soul seems like a better reward than the random loot from the gates.

My main concern is that dragons are the new Oblivion Gates. I think many other people here share my sentiments. Bethesda always seems to think 'Oh, we made something that looks really cool, let's rub it into the players face over and over again so there is absolutely no chance he might not get enough of it!'. I'd rather have a few meaningful, cool and fun dragon fights than 100 boring fights. Personally I think that dragons will become pretty annoying in Skyrim unfortunately. The first time you entered an Oblivion Gate it was cool, but now I hate Oblivion Gates and don't even want to play the Ob main quest because of them. I guess that it will be the same with dragons after a while.

AH at last, yeah, totally THIS ^

The first OB gate was fun, after a few it started to be annoying like hell. I hope dragons keep me interested, plus I remember hearing about different types of dragons, which means we'll probably have a greater variety and a greater challenge once in a while.

Luckily, a majority of my characters should be able to avoid them pretty easily. My first character will focus on the MQ as a warrior, but my real main characters are a mage, assasin, and monk. All but the monk should be fine avoiding them if dragons turn out to be cliff racers on steriods.

Gosh,
You really look like Todd.

The fact they're unlimited doesn't bear a direct correlation to them being frequent.
The game keeps track of your last dragon encounter and manages their timely appearances - that's my assumption.

Yeah, that was in an interview, or article I think. I said something along the lines of:
~The game can recognise if you avoid dragons, and might make one appear and attack you after a while.~
I hope the opposite is true. Such as, if you kill a dragon every once in a while, then the game will recognise this, and not try to shove them down your throat.

It's been confirmed they're not a rare encounter... and the game will check in some quests and see if it's been long since you've encountered one, and it'll give you a quest that involves a dragon-fight... all that is confirmed.

Makes the whole Collect souls to learn the shouts bit kinda meaningless at this point, it would be nice if there were unique Dragons stronger than the normal dragons who had powerful-enough souls for the Dragon Born and the rest aside from Alduin are terror inducing attack the country side Dragons.

but as stated -hopefully- and with and I qoute "I was attacked by 3 dragons at once...waay too much at once" may mean unlimited doesn't equal frequent :P

but at this point Dragons are the new Oblivion gates AND Cliffracers.

I too fear that dragons could become like Oblivion Gates too, but when asked about the subject before, I think Todd Howard said that they still hadn't determined how common dragons should be, so my hope is that this means they're being careful to make sure that they get the right frequency for dragons appearing to ensure that they don't become annoying, but we won't know if they can do that or not until the game is released.

We must keep in mind here that I don't think it was ever said dragons would be common, it's been said there's no actual limit to how many there are in the game, but that doesn't mean we'll see them regularly, it just means they we can't potentially kill all of them and have no more appear, whether they're rare or not depends mostly on how often they spawn, and we don't know how often that will be. Now, Todd mentioned having at one point been chased by three dragons at once, but he told the designer that should be removed, so we're probably not going to see situations like that often in the game.

This sums my feelings up nicely.

I like the rarity of Dragons in TES.

I don't believe dragons will be the new Oblivion gates or Cliffraces, I do believe they've learned their lesson. I just wish they'll be more of a unique encounters that happen only once in a long time, and when they do, you're like "Oh - ***** - ****".

im glad they arent. i have this nightmare scenario of being able to run up to a dragon that is covered in thick scaly armor and hit him with my sword and kill him just by whacking away at him over and over.........remember now, its the same as having a GI JOE doll come up to you and stick you with a sewing needle while wearing platearmor. it might hurt but unless he gets you in the jugular he isnt going to come anywhere near killing you. if it turns out that way then im glad dragons are infinite cause otherwise the guards are going to have to explain to me why they couldnt take out the local dragon themselves if ONE guy could irregardless if hes dragonborn or not.
