First off, IRL, I love horses and even own one. In the game I got a 'certain' horse as a part of a 'certain' faction's quest line, and now I desperately want it to just stand next to my house, doing nothing but beg for food from Lydia. (Or in the case of this particular horse, murder bunnies).
Most of the reasons are mentioned. Riding one doesn't add all that much and by the divines, does this thing get in the way. It charges dragons! But the most important reason has not been mentioned; Bethesda needs to look at how real horses act. They are prey animals, which means they should flee at the first sign of danger. NOT CHARGE FRIGGING DRAGONS! Honestly, a horse sometimes flees a half-mile if a leaf falls in front of it's face, or a dog barks once. Dragons should scare the living daylight out of horses. Let them run away and come back after combat is over or something, or flee to the nearest stable.
Worst of all, horses follow you around when you fast travel and consequently can get attacked. They should relocate to the nearest stable or something. When I fast travel to a dragon shrine and a dragon pops, I don't want my horse charging in. It's unnatural.
