Am I the only one that feels terrible playing a "bad&#34

Post » Sun Dec 11, 2011 3:41 pm

So I recently started a new game in New Vegas after completing it for the first time. My first play-through had me saving helpless wastelanders, avoiding violence with the factions that seemed to have the right goals in mind and acting in the interests of New Vegas as a whole. S'all great.

After deciding to play the game once again, I wanted to experience the other side of the coin. I wanted to make a character that was a selfish, manipulative, violent jerk. After creating him and completing the tutorial came my first moral dilema. I had to decide whether to save Goodsprings or to side with the Powder Gangers. My character is a selfish jerk, right? So of course I support the Powder Gangers.

After getting rid of that annoying trader fellow and plotting with my new found friends, we're ready to take over Goodsprings. The town have formed some kind of militia but we don't care. We charge in weapons blazing and that's when it happens. I come face to face with Doc Mitchell, the man that saved my life a day before the attack. I see the sorrow in his eyes as I raise my shovel and swing it at him. That look still haunts me.

Am I the only one that feels terrible when playing the "Bad" character? What do you think?

Oh and if you want to see exactly how it happened. Heres some rather fun gameplay / commentary showing the event:

That's the "speedbump."

It's a good one, too, because the Goodsprings folks are the least morally ambiguous people in the game.

Once you get past that hump, it's easy to be a bastard.

It's definitely a different kind of fun, and one that is less involving, story-wise, but I wouldn't say it's boring. I guess that all comes down to different ideas of fun, though.

I wouldn't recommend playing that way the first time through, because you'll miss out on most of the good stuff, but It's a great way to run through it the second time.

Nope, I have a hard time too. I just start to feel like dirt, and the playthrough ends shortly after it begins. I get far more satisfaction out of ending the lives of such creatures than actually playing them.

I've never been very good at being a bad guy. Of all the FO3 games I've played, for example, I never once played a game where I blew up Megaton. Unlike some folk on these boards though, I have no problem putting down every coyote I see. After seeing all the skeletons in their cave, I've decided they are a menace and stuff.

That sounds like a rather interesting approach to the game. So you went for the Wild Card ending ?

It's just role playing. So I don't have a problem pretending to be evil but I usually play nice the first time I play a RPG game. I was thinking of making a selfish opportunistic egotistical evil person for my next playthrough, not giving a damn about factions like the powdergangers or the residents of Goodsprings screwing them both if I can figure out a way.

Cool video BTW: insane shoveling florist.. reminded me of one of the http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wat5mCmDDpU I spent ages on to earn. Easy Pete sure was a hard nut to crack.

I tried in FO3, didn't do top well with that, but my next character will be evil, legion supporter. and he will be a behemoth of a man, a true devil scourge upon the Mojave.

Yup. I have a hard time being an absolute bast_rd in these types of games. Like someone mentioned earlier, being evil can make for a very shallow game experience. I guess you have to give your character depth and perform actions only if there is some kind of reasoning behind them, unlike killing every single NPC just cause you can.

Yup, find it really difficult being an evil character. just can't bring myself to screw over people who've done nothing to me, even in game!

That said I do have a HUGE vengeful streak, Benny had it pretty rough... crippled both legs with a 9mm then finished him off with a straight razor! I'm not messed up... just bein' shot in the head is one of the few things I take exception to

Incidentally, your accent sounds... familliar... :P

Nah, it's the way how someone plays. Being a mass murderer and a thief is simple, being intelligent about it: leaving a trail of misery, blackmailing and conning people to fight each other is a lot more fun.

In many games I play, I find myself not being able to be a dike to everyone I met. At worst, I think indifferent, revenge, or "just business" mentality. At best, I play as a saint. Stealing doesn't count for evil for me, however.

Playing evil characters makes me feel sick.

I also feel squeamish reading posts by players who play evil. Something really nasty deep within them.

Playing evil doesn't mean that you kill everyone. You can still play a bad guy and give your character motivation. My motivation was that he was tired of trusting people, because it always comes back to bite him, and all it took was a funny feeling to make him leave you where you stand.

I let plenty of people live. I rationalized Goodsprings by saying that the Powder Gangers got a bad rap. In a lawless world, why should these particular hooligans get relegated to slavery? They got out of their predicament. More power to them.

I don't know Ringo from Adam. Crimson Caravan? Who the frak are they, anyway? The hell with them. I'll help you get this guy.

I can never bring myself to be just evil. I always turn on the powder gangers, but even just siding with the legion, it bugs me. I see the slaves and want to become moses. I want to help people, I even felt a little bad for Nipton. Sure there were people who deserved it, but there were innocents there... The stage of Hyper-realism Fallout reaches for me is almost disturbing.

Yeah, but doesn't that also involve killing the guy who glued your brains back together, and the girl who tought you to shoot, gave you a rifle, and showed you the basics of how to survive in the wastes?

Juat can't do it lol

Yeah, that's why I called it the hump. It's only roleplaying after all, and Goodsprings is the hardest part of playing that kind of character. The motivation for killing any other character in the game just kind of comes naturally, if you're really committed to doing it.

That's the beauty of role playing. Just letting my darker side loose.

Normally, in real life I'm just a "good" hardworking taxpaying citizen.

It's just a bunch of bits and bytes on a screen. Rest assured: no harm done! :P

I love the Hitman series, although Hitman the movie was a flop.
