Worry is like a rocking chair: it won't get you anywhere, but it gives you something to do.
I'm "hopeful", because I'm still a dedicated frequent MW player (modded to the gills), and found myself let down, after the initial great first impression, by all that was taken away in OB. As a "sandbox" combat game with RPG trimmings, it was excellent; as an actual RPG, it was definitely a disappointment. From much of what's been released about Skyrim (which admittedly isn't much), it looks to continue the trend. I may be mistaken, and sincerely hope that I am, but I'm going to hold off on buying it for at least a week or two after release, and a few of the posters I can rely on make their better-informed comments about it based on actual gameplay.
MW was a delicious cake with some relatively bland icing on top, and Oblivion was more like a relatively flavorless cake with sweet icing. I prefer to look past the icing at the cake, whereas other players will judge it solely by the icing. If you like icing, that's one thing; if you prefer cake, then it's another. I'm just hoping that this time Bethesda manages to make the best of both worlds, but not holding my breath for it; I've been disappointed before.
