The pacifist's way

Post » Wed Nov 03, 2010 9:12 am

Does anyone plan to try to not kill anyone when they play? I remember in an interview they said it was possible, which is a big plus for me. I hated how in 3 a lot of quests had the simple solution of deciding who to kill. It was super awesome in 2 when I finished the game at about level 10 with I think at most a few rats and mantises on my kill count.

not killing anyone in a post apoc setting? That′s like going to a hamburger joint and not order a hamburger, or go to a dance party and not dance.

Plus I′m a peaceful, logic solving guy in RL, that′s why I play games, so I can do the things I can′t do in RL (and not go to jail) withs in the end is shooting people in the balls with a 12 gauge

but meh each to there own.

Yeah I'm going to try it out.
Kinda annoyed that there isn't an achievement for it though.

I think a true pacifist run lies further down the line for me, will be fun to try though.

But I'm gonna try for a non-combat focused character on my first run so I'll try to avoid combat when I can. Will likely get a companion for extra protection though, gonna have to see how everything works.

Naturally I like to blow apart some heads on occasion too. It's just that finishing these kinds of games without doing it is a major additional fun factor and any game that allows it I'll give it a good, honest try. When I did it in FO2 and Deus Ex I learned a lot about tactics for avoiding fights and how to handle them when I get caught. It was a lot more interesting than if I just went the usual route of blowing their brains out and calling it a day.

It'll be impossible for me to be a pacifist when their's money to be made out in the wasteland.

Well, a lot of the time being a pacifist renders a bigger reward. So money and items aren't really an issue with the idea. Of course, there's also the notion that though you're not allowed to take a life, there's no rule against stealing.

I always end up killing a ton of people. There's no way I could make it through a pacifist playthrough. If anything, I would snap at the end and kill absolutely everyone.

i never kill anybody without provocation on my first playthrough. you dont get the full experience if you just kill everyone

as in i have never killed a megaton bystander or an npc in rivet city.

unless they were evil like eulogy jones

In the interview where the guy went to Repcon
Spoiler
This is a spoiler for the Repcon quest, once the quest is started you are tasked with dealing with Nightkin in the basemant, you can kill them all or sneak past them to talk with their insane leader wich you convince to leave with a few speech checks... after that you have to either convince the insane scientist who thinks hes a ghoul to stay or you can simply kill him... just saying you can complete this quest without killing anyone it seems =/ (this is a summary, there is more to the quest than that) just saying more quests are probably like this P=

Ok.. so.. i'm not sure I understand the premise here..

what are the rules of a no-kill game? what if i'm walking through the wastes, and a group of raiders comes to me?

or the quest I'm on requires me to get an item that is in the middle of a raider camp?

etc.

Are we only talking non-hostile NPC's? because that is easy...

I wish there were ways to talk your way out of *everything*, even hostile encounters. if your speech skill is high enough, you should be able to choose a perk (requires 10 cha, and 100 speech) that would allow you to talk your way out of fighting (humans/ghouls/robots) mutants/feral ghouls/wildlife wouldn't count obviously. now THAT would be awesome!

you can use non lethal ammo and weapons. it knocks them out instead of killing them
it means dont kill anything unless it is absolutely needed to complete the game

When I first played FO3,I tried doing a good character without killing. After that I felt like making a neutral like character and killing others for fun if it sounded better.I'm not planning on making a good character in NV anymore.

ahh, you see, that was beyond my knowledge that there actually was non-lethal rounds in FO:NV. That ...

that makes me want this game incredibly badly. Non-lethal ammo/unconsciousness is awesome! perfect for fallout! they had it in 1, I wondered why they took it out of 3 (excluding paralizing palm)

man I'm super stoked now! thanks!

edit: also, i'd assume you'd prettymuch have to skip most/all side quests, thus limiting your chances of running across a quest that requires you to kill something. I mean, you wouldn't HAVE to, but.. i dunno.

I'm definitely trying this though. maybe for my third run (first run will be normal with guns, second hardcoe and melee/energy weapons, and third with whatever is non lethal :D)

My first playthrough will be Speech, Science, Repair and Lockpicking on hardcoe, without killing anyone. Raul will take care of that :D

they had non lethal take downs in fallout 1?

i know there was a chance to knock the enemy unconcious. but i did not know there was any way to force it to happen.

well, thats what I meant, I was referring to the *ability* to knock an enemy unconscious. not really the ability to do it on queue. It's even cooler in NV :D (or at least if I'm to go off what you say.. i'm sure you have a source, right?)

its confirmed that there are bean bag rounds. and that boxing gloves that only knock out enemys.

and some obsidian guy said "it is possible to play through this entire game and kill no one"

I only really heard about the boxing glove. Beanbag rounds'll definitely help. Them and the boxing gloves'll probably be more satisfying than running away or trying to get my enemy to run away in the old Fallouts.
