The "Perfect" Nord

Post » Tue Oct 28, 2014 3:02 am

When i play skyrim and customize my character i always wanna base it off me and my ancestral roots. im Scandinavian, so Denmark, and Norway. Those Two countries are in the " Nordic region" the problem is that i have black hair and usually in skyrim, nords have brown or blond hair so i fell left out. im probably over exaggerating so please tell me your opinions and comments.

"Usually" doesnt mean that you have to have that hair color as it is still possible to be born with darker hair. As for "perfect" Nord i say that for Nords actions mean more than words. So get you some nice Skyforged Steel and maybe some Nordic Carved Armor and bring honor and glory to Skyrim

Think about what the Nords favor. Honor and prowess in battle, and the worship of Talos. So get yourself some fine steel weapon and armor and an amulet of Talos. And do quests that will help benefit Skyrim and her people.

If one thing is unusual, doesn't mean that it's less true, no?

I'm Dutch myself, which is fairly similar to Scandinavian people. They're often pictured as blonde haired people with blue eyes. This is true for me, aside from my brown eyes. But that doesn't make me less of a Dutchman.

I'm quite sure that a black haired Scandinavian is still Scandinavian. And in Tamriel, a black haired Nord is still as much of a Nord than the rest.

My main character, a Nord aswell, is black haired. And while her use of Necromancy can be considered questionable for ''true'' Nords, she very much values the Nord culture and has a strong sense of honour.

Nords aren't based purely on Scandinavians but ancient noth european cultures in general like Celts and Saxons. Even if they were, Nords are Nords, not real world vikings. So there's plenty of black haired nords running around, the Blackbriars,Ravencrones(Jarl of Morthal) and Seranas family all have black hair and are Nords.

Dark or black hair and even darker features (skin tone and eyes) are not unknown or even all that unusual in both modern and historical Scandinavia. Myth cycles, Viking-era sagas and genealogies all have descriptions of "svarte" or dark/black pertaining to physical features.

Millennia of genetic influence from the indigenous people (Sami), Vikings returning with slaves from far and wide, Traders, foreign visitors, etc have all contributed to diversity beyond the stereotypical "blond and blue."

In the context of Skyrim (as a geographical region of Tamriel), one could easily apply similar concepts of migration, trade, conquest/slavery and the resulting assimilation of genetic features like hair color.
