Not just a 'creature-adding' mod, not just a 'difficulty' mod, not just a 'gameplay-tweaking' mod, Oscuro's Oblivion Overhaul is actually one of the finest finest roleplaying mods around. http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=OblivionMods.Detail&id=1757 by Martigen, Corepc Dev_Akm Shadowborn is the perfect complement to Oscuro, adding much-needed spontaneity to Oscuro's static world. Crank Martigen's mod all the way up and Oblivion will feel as wonderfully unpredictable as an MMO. These mods are so inseparable to me I count them as one.

This essential mod goes a long way toward making Oblivion's consolized interface useable. Configurable from within the game via a menu.

Two excellent character-levelling mods that do away with stat management, excel spreadsheets, visits to Wiki pages, etc, to research "builds". With these mods a player can just play and let a mod handle leveling seamlessly and invisibly in the background. I tend to prefer RL but I am using nGCD in my current game and am very impressed.

This mod allows the player to control the speed of advancement of each skill. Easily configurable via an .ini.

Willpower again has an affect on the player's vulnerability to magic, as in previous ES games.

Makes the player lose fatigue when running. When the player's fatigue hits 0 he starts to walk. Also allows the player to sprint for a brief time.

Using this mod merchants' gold goes up and down with each trade. Also does away with the haggle slider (what a relief!) Allows the player to specify how much gold they recive from looting containers, enemies, as quest rewards, etc. All configurable via .ini.

The way the cities of Tamriel should have looked. Spend hours wandering around like a tourist, awestruck at how different (and gorgeous) everything looks. Comes in modular form - you can choose to redo all of Cyrodiil's cities or just one. It's your choice. When I'm not using Better Cities I'm using Arthmoor's http://www.gamesas.com/bgsforums/index.php?showtopic=1019807, which tranfers the vanilla cities into the Cyrodiil worldspace. Wonderful for those of us who love to ride horses through town.

It adds windows that turn off and on in synch with day/night cycles and also, optionally, smoke from chimneys. Comes with a nice variety of window color tints too.

Emma has recently released one of her wonderful companion mods for Oblivion, http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=28977, an Alchemist-oriented companion with a mind of her own (and, as a bonus, dialog voiced by Emma herself).

My favorite armor mod is Brash's http://oblivion.brashendeavors.net/bows/. A great mod for anyone who loves light, ranger-ish amror and slightly more natural, non-fantasy-type bows. I also love the ranger camp just outside Weye.

This is my list. I'm running totally crash-free now, lots of great quests, gorgeous locations, immersive combat and more items, monsters, and NPCs then I can deal with.

I decided to forego too many texture replacers on this install because I wanted higher performance for all the gameplay enhancing mods I was adding.

I am using OBGEv2 (godrays, ssao, etc.) and screen effects (for that little extra fine-tuning of color, contrast, etc. and a tiny amount of blur)


But having a full FCOM + UL + BC + RAEVWD + TIE4MODS + lots of extras makes for a pretty sweet Oblivion experience.

Well, I find it simplest to only use the best mods there are, which are, by definition, the ones I choose to put in my own load order. ;)

Phoenix,

I notice no bashed patch. I guess it's not strictly necessary with your load order, but I suspect you would benefit from it, especially with the new import functions available.

I was going to ask why you use No Lights Flicker instead of using the bashed patch tweak for that, and then I noticed (gasp!) no bashed patch.

Just curious.

I've just started a new game (third character played.) Here are a few I've discovered this time around that I won't play without again!

* Automagic Bags - Adds some bags that will magically put some stuff away (yay - keys!) and also you can edit the bag ini file and name your own bags. Useful!
*Vibrant Textures pack by Corepc - Just OMG. It's like a brand new environment to me. Everything just pops.
* TNR Races - The one that's part of the Cobl pack. It changes the faces, eyes and hairstyles of all the NPCs. It's amazing and every NPC looks fresh and unique.
* Setsuna Training Dummy - FINALLY I can level up while hitting those training dummies. Now the dummies and ranged targets are useful instead of just decorative.
* HGEC Body (if you have a gal) - the shoulders are nice and realistic and I enjoy this now over regular Exnem or vanilla. Looks great on woodelves (although I might choose Exnem if I was making a warrior-type).

There's a lot of other must-haves for me but these ones are my new discoveries that really up my enjoyment of my game this time 'round.

Thanks everyone so far :) I am still new to Oblivion modding, but I'll post the mods that I am using. I decided not to use massive gameplay altering mods, just to see what vanilla Oblivion is with it's crucial flaws (IMHO) corrected.

Unofficial Patches for Oblivion, Shivering Isles and Official DLCs
All +5 Attributes
Quest Award Leveller
Less Annoying Magic Experience
Harvest Flora

They were all manually installed, no OBMM, and it was quite simple, so I guess for a novice in Oblivion modding this is a nice set up :)

At the moment, I'm really enjoying http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=22810. It's a beautiful house mod with a fun little quest. I recommend her other mods, as well! ^_^

Also, a bit of advice when looking for mods! I'd suggest playing your game and asking yourself what you could add to make things better then go hunting for it. Chances are that you'll find it! There're over 20,000 mods on TESNexus now!

Keep in mind, as well, that just because a mod isn't packed full of endorsemants and download numbers, it doesn't mean it's a bad mod. Sometimes the coolest mods are the least known!

http://www.oblivionsrealestate.com/ is a brilliant modding site you'll want to check out as well.

Hello again.

I am going to try some more extensive modifications on Oblivion, still without using Wrye Bash or OBSE (to keep things simple for a modding novice like me), but I am not yet sure about the loading order. I have read the mods faq at this forum and devk_akm's load order guide, but I am still confused, for example: even though he says OOO should be loaded last, I do not know which mods need to take precedence to show through...and which mods need the DLCs to include their features in the changes they make. This is what I am thinking of doing, I would appreciate if someone experienced pointed out the incompatibilites or incorrect load order and posted the correct one, please:

Here are all the mods I use right now. I don't recommend any of them practically every mod I've tried has ruined my game at one point X.X but right now, with all these it seems to be working pretty well, except for a few bugs I've been noticing, such as NPCs can breathe underwater and use all of their attacks (at least IC guards) some NPCs have black eyes or no hair, some dialogue and locations are in Dutch etc. etc. Other than that it runs better and smoother than ever.

I am going to try some more extensive modifications on Oblivion, still without using Wrye Bash or OBSE (to keep things simple for a modding novice like me), but I am not yet sure about the loading order....


The irony of that statement is that Wrye Bash will actually make things easier for you as opposed to more difficult. And it'll greatly assist you in sorting out your load order and any incompatibilities. The people who say it's hard to use don't bother to read the readme and installation instructions.

And there's nothing complex about OBSE. :) It's like any other mod. It's just installed in a slightly different location. Some of the most awesome mods out there utilize OBSE, so it'd be a good idea to get it. :goodjob:

2. Does OOO increase the view distance underwater and makes it look less muddy?

1: Neither Midas Magic or LAME do anything that would cause the two to conflict(Midas adds only new spells and items/places, LAME doesn't edit Midas Magic locations/items or spells), so really, they don't have to be placed in any specific location with each other, so place them anywhere after the unofficial patches, and you're good to go with them.
2: It's been a while since I've used OOO, but I don't think it does. I could be wrong, but I don't think it does because I can't see any reason for it to do so.
3: As with the previous question, I'm not totally sure, but I am fairly certain that you will still need the Quest Award Leveler. Unless it delevels some quest rewards(such as Chillrend and the like), in which case, you won't need it. Double check if it delevels the quest rewards in vanilla. And, in case you don't know what that means, Here's a easy explanation: Deleveling something makes it so that you always get one version of a item, for example, or in the case of monsters, the always spawn at a certain level instead of scaling to the player.
So, if a quest reward is deleveled, you always get one version of the reward. If it's the best version, then that's good. If it's less then the best, then you might want it.

A couple more questions:

1. Should OBMM be installed manually or via an .exe? I recall reading somewhere that the .exe was preferred, but usually people do not like the registry modifications that come with it.
2. I have OOO in a omod ready archive, but it is the 1.33 version, whereas 1.34b5 is in a separate archive, with no omod conversion script. What shall I do to avoid conflicts? This is valid for other mods. EDIT: Like the Unoffical Oblivion Patch, for which there is an hotfix in an archive instead of an omod.
3. Does OOO have MOBS included?
4. I have read a lot about Knights of the Nine's incompatibility problems, especially with OOO, so should I load it at the end of the list or just after OOO?

Yes, use the executable installer for OBMM. OOO 1.34b5 does not need an installation script because it does not contain much other than necessary updates. The only optional module it contains is OOO WaterWeeds. You can delete that after installing it if you want. I could also give you a quick OMOD script if you want to do it cleanly. Get the OMOD version of the UOP since you are using OBMM. Install the Hotfix on top of it. OOO uses OMOBS, not MOBS. They are related, but not the same. You need to grab the stand-alone OMOBs file for use with OOO or FCOM after installing the UOP Hotfix. Use BOSS to sort your load order, but, yes, KoTN should load after OOO.

  • You should pack the OOO 1.34b5 files into an OMOD. (There are instructions in my site if you look under utilities.)
  • Almost all of Oblivion's original files are packed in BSAs, but the Video, Music and Shaders folders are loose. You should back those up.
  • OOO and FCOM use OMOBS, which is why you download the OMOBS stand-alone mod. However, most outside mods do not use OMOBS. MOBS is close to OMOBS, so if you have a choice, get weapon and armor mods that are MOBS rebalanced.
  • KoTN should indeed load after OOO, and that works fine.
  • Use BOSS to order your load order. Do not do it manually.
