There is no denying the stuff you posted has vastly more substance than almost all else that was posted here, but is that really the point? Remember you're on an Elder Scrolls forum, not a metal one haha. There is a time and a place. These guys were jus looking to sit back and hear a cheerful folky tune to get their spirits up for Skyrim, not some deep musical discussion. Not everyone knows about bands like Enslaved, Graveland, Kroda, Falkenbach, Windir, Thyrfing, Satanic Warmaster, Ulver, etc. , we were all there at one point. Even if most folk metal isn't the best music out there, don't tell me you don't enjoy a drunken viking jig every now and then. Let them have their Fintroll and Ensiferum, you gotta admit that that stuff is still by far better than 99.5 % of all other music out there.

By all means expose them, but no need to act like an elitist dike right?

Truth be told, it was more so just being in a Skype chat with some friends of mine and laughing/cringing at some of the things posted in here that inspired me to post here about it. It has always been my message board 'act' of sorts to be the big screaming elitist dike, and I've never really felt any need to change it because I get some more or less hilarious reactions by it. I mean, in all reality, I have little room to talk because I love Paramore for Christ sake.

And nah, I"d really not admit that about Fintroll and Ensiferum

The current flavor of the month hip hop radio music? Sure, but there is plenty of great music out there that I'd rather listen to than them.

At any rate, to steer this somewhere on topic I'd like to think that if the TES music were replaced by anything other than what is already used (which it shouldn't be) then they would do well to see about fitting the work of someone like Aslak Tolonen's ambient work into it.

Carcass and At the Gates were the first two bands to play that melodeath style (at least the first two to make it known to relatively larger audiences) so you'll have to excuse me if I associate a band who plays in that same genre with said bands. They may not rip them off, lord knows metalcore bands do enough of that with At the Gates, but they draw heavily from both (and yes, I know it is mostly due to Amott, but I still can't see them as 'progressive.')

As far as At the Gates goes, I wonder. The description you use for them sounds a lot as if you've actually listened to their album The Red in the Sky is Ours instead of being just some random Slaughter of the Soul fan. If not, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IOnd0hhDRbc

Indeed I am a fan of the older At The Gates, almost every song on Slaughter of the Soul sounded the same (though I liked some of it).

The reason I call Arch Enemy progressive is because they first came out with their own sound (I wouldn't even call it inspired by the first Melodic Death Metal groups, but more by 80's power metal if you look into Mike Amotts influence), and they continued to change it over the years (the same way I would call Carcass progressive). They didn't just try to recreate their first album over and over. Also I'm going to argue that Mike Amott was the reason that Carcass put out their Melodic release, the rest of the band didn't seem to care too much for it regarding some of their comments on it, their followup Swansong, plus their own personal projects.

I always saw Arch Enemy as an innovator combining the old Swedish Death Metal sound (check Carnage), with power metal influences to create a completely unique Melodic Death Metal sound that I still haven't heard replicated. Their first two releases are a testiment to the raw combination between that extremely heavy death metal sound, with tons of melody piled on top. At The Gates never had that "heavy" tone that the old Arch Enemy had, and Carcass just had this really gritty tone overall that is just really hard to explain, but not the same as that old-school death metal sound.

Fair enough, I guess it just isn't really 'my style.' Never could get behind their sound, never really will. A lot of the old school Swedish DM acts (and even more so in Finland with bands like Amorphis, Demigod, Sentenced) had a solid grasp of including melody in their music without (as far as I'm concerned) diluting it with excessive influence from power metal acts.

EDIT: I think even seeing what David Tibet from Current 93 could do for TES fitting music would be quite interesting.

But Stairway to Heaven would fit nicely in some parts of Skyrim (not the vocals just the music) Imagine that playing while climbing up to a mountain top ruin while a dragon comes flying down at you...

I can't stand metal in a fantasy setting. I could understand it being in Fallout... but it really does not fit the world. I usually turn off music while playing games. Unless its a hack and slash game like Diablo 2.

That said, Blind Guardian had an awesome soundtrack for Sacred 2 (I know they at least did the theme song). The Sacred series is weird anyway.
