The Perfect Theme Song For The Fallout Series?

Post » Thu May 06, 2010 12:27 am

I wasn't sure where to put this, but this seems to be the best place. The song in question is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QVqSqLyV0Kk&feature=related

As well as being an amazing song, I think it fits the Fallout story very well. Let me give you some lyrics:

I don't want money or a thing
For what I was and what I am and what I'll ever be
I don't need to be overground
I don't need to give away my life or make a sound
All I ever wanted was the thing I couldn't find

This refers to life in the Vault.

I don't wanna make a judgment call
Take a stand or make demands or try to please you all
All I wanted was the truth and that I couldn't find

Refers to how individuality is mostly crushed under the overseer. Especially 101.

Oh I tried to get away - run away, far away
But my shadow followed me - every place, kept my pace
Well I don't belong anyway
Well I missed my call - what a shame

Refers to leaving the Vault. Mostly Fallout 3 on this one.

I don't want much of anything
Everything I got I earned through pain and suffering
I don't want you numberin' my days
I don't want you trying to immortalize my name
All I ever wanted was a little peace of mind

Refers to how 101 and the Vault Dweller are treated as heroes (usually) upon leaving the Vault.

And what I have you can't touch or see
All I have I got from God and that's all I need
All I ever really wanted was to stay inside

This could refer to the Vault dwellers seeing the Enclave as a God-like authority.

Well I tried to believe I was freed - in the lead
Yeah, I thought I could succeed - but it's not my need
Something there was in my way so I stayed - stood in place
Where forever I'll remain - it was not my way

Refers to how, in the end, both 101 and the Vault Dweller eventually die.

Crawl out through the fallout, baby, when they drop that bomb
Crawl out through the fallout with the greatest of aplomb
When your white count's getting higher, hurry don't delay
I'll hold you close and kiss those radiation burns away
Crawl out through the fallout, baby, to my loving arms through the rain of Strontium 90
Think about your hero when you're at Ground Zero and crawl out through the fallout back to me
Crawl out through the fallout, baby, you know what I mean
Crawl out through the fallout, 'cause they said this bomb was clean
If you cannot find the way, just listen for my song, I'll love you all your life although that may not be too long
Crawl out through the fallout, baby, to my loving arms while those ICBMs keep us free
When you hear me call out, baby kick the wall out and crawl out the fallout back to me
Cause you'll be the only girl in the world for me
Why don't crawl out through the fallout back to me (Repeat last verse three times).

Radioactive mama, hold me tight
Radioactive mama treat me right/Radioactive mama we'll reach critical mass tonight
Well when we get together clear away the crowd there won't be nothing left except a mushroom shaped cloud
Radioactive mama treat me right
Radioactive mama we'll reach critical mass tonight
Well, your kisses do things to me in oh so many ways
I feel them going through me all those gamma gamma rays
Radioactive mama treat me right
Radioactive mama we'll reach critical mass tonight
Well since I kissed you baby, that evening in the park, I lost my hair and eyebrows and my teeth shine in the dark
Radioactive mama treat me right
Radioactive mama we'll reach critical mass tonight.

Something harsh. Harsh music, something core industrial, deep bass beats about 80/90 bpm. No vocals, I think of something from Xotox or noisuf-x - apocalypse.

I played Fallout 2 first, so http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e3PXiV95kwA is always going to be "The Fallout Theme" to me.

OP: Too electronic, too loud, too "modern".

I like Gizmo's better, but that's too "in your face"...too literal, which makes it too cliche to me.

I'm going to stick with "A kiss to build a dream on".

Yikes! The Orc and I agree...

I favored it for the end credits, partly because of the lyrics :), and certainly because its vintage, and was an album release [pre-dating Fallout the game by 30+years].

Its the End of the Worlds R.E.M

That's great, it starts with an earthquake, birds and
snakes, an aeroplane and Lenny Bruce is not afraid.
Eye of a hurricane, listen to yourself churn - world
serves its own needs, dummy serve your own needs. Feed
it off an aux speak, grunt, no, strength, the Ladder
start to clatter with fear fight down height. Wire
in a fire, representing seven games, and a government
for hire at a combat site. Left of west and coming in
a hurry with the furys breathing down your neck. Team
by team reporters baffled, trumped, tethered cropped.
Look at that low playing. Fine, then. Uh oh,
overflow, population, common food, but it'll do to Save
yourself, serve yourself. World serves its own needs,
listen to your heart bleed dummy with the rapture and
the revered and the right, right. You vitriolic,
patriotic, slam, fight, bright light, feeling pretty
psyched.

It's the end of the world as we know it.
It's the end of the world as we know it.
It's the end of the world as we know it and I feel fine.

Six o'clock - TV hour. Don't get caught in foreign
towers. Slash and burn, return, listen to yourself
churn. Lock it in, uniforming, book burning, blood
letting. Every motive escalate. Automotive incinerate.
Light a candle, light a motive. Step down, step down.
Watch your heel crush, crushed, uh-oh, this means no
fear cavalier. Renegade steer clear! A tournament,
tournament, a tournament of lies. Offer me solutions,
offer me alternatives and I decline.

It's the end of the world as we know it.
It's the end of the world as we know it.
It's the end of the world as we know it and I feel fine.

The other night I dreamt of knives, continental
drift divide. Mountains sit in a line, Leonard
Bernstein. Leonid Brezhnev, Lenny Bruce and Lester
Bangs. Birthday party, cheesecake, jelly bean, boom! You
symbiotic, patriotic, slam bug net, right? Right.

It's the end of the world as we know it.
It's the end of the world as we know it.
It's the end of the world as we know it and I feel
fine...fine...

That's too negative. The key to the Fallout "feel" is excessive and unwarranted positivity in the face of ruin... a sort of fiddle as Rome burns sort of thing.

"Make the world go away"?

"Stayin' alive"?

"Love is in the air"?

"Reach out for the light"?

"Another world"?

"I saved the world today"?

"Brothers in arms" <---- I'd pick this one!

"Where have all the flowers gone?"?

"Schadenfreude"?

"Purple rain"? *giggles*

"End of the world"?

Okay, I'm done now!

No wait, one more: "Love like a rocket"!

Okay, I'll shut up now...

Hehe, you have no idea how long I've dreamed of a Fallout trailer that shows the nukes launching and civilization being utterly destroyed as Louis Armstrong sings optimistically in the background to it all. :P

THAT would be AWESOME.

I remember sitting in front of my computer when Fallout 1 started up with "Maybe" by the Ink Spots
and was completely floored because of the extreme contrast of the song vs the visuals.

So yea. "Wonderful World" by Louie Armstrong would be great!

although it kinda misses the topic, evan and zagers "in the year 2525" would be nice.. at least it's got that humanity-screwed-up-mentality of Fallout. monty python's "always look on the bright side of life" would perfectly suit with a couple of nuke flashs sync to the chorus...
but "wonderful world" takes the cake, folks!

Nine Inch Nails - Lights in the Sky (The Slip)

or...

Nine Inch Nails - 1 Ghosts I (Ghosts I-IV)

It may be a little bit too modern, but it somehow fits the atmosphere perfectly.

I don't really think of Fallout having a one theme song, but if we were to narrow it down, I would choose "Maybe". The soundtrack dissonance you get with the actions in the game and the vintage tunes has always been to me a trademark of the series.

My personal choice for an over-arching fallout theme?

Land of Condusion- the origonal by Genesis.

I mustve dreamed a thousand dreams
Been haunted by a million screams
But I can hear the marching feet
Theyre moving into the street.

Now did you read the news today
They say the dangers gone away
But I can see the fires still alight
There burning into the night.

Theres too many men
Too many people
Making too many problems
And not much love to go round
Cant you see
This is a land of confusion.

This is the world we live in
And these are the hands were given
Use them and lets start trying
To make it a place worth living in.

Ooh superman where are you now
When everythings gone wrong somehow
The men of steel, the men of power
Are losing control by the hour.

This is the time
This is the place
So we look for the future
But theres not much love to go round
Tell me why, this is a land of confusion.

This is the world we live in
And these are the hands were given
Use them and lets start trying
To make it a place worth living in.

I remember long ago -
Ooh when the sun was shining
Yes and the stars were bright
All through the night
And the sound of your laughter
As I held you tight
So long ago -

I wont be coming home tonight
My generation will put it right
Were not just making promises
That we know, well never keep.

Too many men
Theres too many people
Making too many problems
And not much love to go round
Cant you see
This is a land of confusion.

Now this is the world we live in
And these are the hands were given
Use them and lets start trying
To make it a place worth fighting for.

This is the world we live in
And these are the names were given
Stand up and lets start showing
Just where our lives are going to.
