Depend on ammo type, some gives more than other as in an exchange rate has not calculated it but it looks like its related with price. I note that shotgun shell has high value, sniper rifle ammo is probably higher, 44 also have a high value, 10mm are cheap and 5mm minigun ammo is very cheap. And you have losses if you transformed the 1000 5.56 to shotgun shells I guess you would get less than 1000.
And the exchange rate is not level or skill based.

I threw in 1000 5mm bullets in the press. I'm not quite sure how many 44er came out but there were no more than 100 pieces.

I find very little.
Exchange rate ≈ 10 : 1 :stare:

It would be nice if we could produce missiles
They are also quite rare.

Nevertheless, it is worth it to shoot with a high caliber.
The big, either way, a larger "Boooomm" :gun:

it make sence though. machine gun type ammo is used up very quickly. so one 44 is worth 10 5. so you will get more from shot gun shells and 44er.
