I finally got to playing the Pitt DLC for the first time. I won the fights in the arena easily, then got to speak to Ashur, he rushes off, then I find out that the 'cure' is a baby. Understandably I'm pretty reluctant to kidnap the nice scientist lady's infant daughter for some ex-slaves who may or may not care about hurting her to get a cure, so I leave Haven to talk to Midea and maybe ask her why she didn't see the need to tell me that she wants me to kidnap a baby. Then I notice that all the slaves are marked as hostile. I run all the way back to Midea, and she tells me I've thrown in my lots with Ashur.
Um. Uhhhhm. I refuse to kidnap a baby, that makes me buddies with the slavers? Is it that crazy that I'd want some clarification first before I do such a heinous thing? When I went to see Ashur, I kind of assumed that that would begin the second act of the story, where I'd do some errands for Ashur, see the Pitt from Ashur's perspective for a bit (hell, there were all these named raider NPCs on the way), maybe have a chance to talk to Midea and Wernher some more. Apparently not.
I bought the GOTY edition of Fallout 3 despite already having a copy of Fallout 3 because I'd heard so many good things about the Pitt - that this is the FO3 DLC with the best writing, and that Ashur is a compelling anti-villain. But Ashur gets like two sentences to have his say before he runs off to die. I didn't get any more insight on the Pitt than I'd already gleaned from Paladin Kodiak in the base game. I'd been playing in the Pitt for only about two hours, and according to the Fallout wiki, I didn't miss much. This DLC is way too short. It ends just as I started to really get into the Pitt's grim atmosphere.
I can't say I haven't enjoyed the Pitt. It's just been such an underwhelming experience that it's left a bitter taste in my mouth.
