The Playstyle Of Your First Character

Post » Mon Nov 09, 2009 7:04 am

You may or may not ( probably not ) remember me from several months ago when I created a couple of threads dealing with your first playstyle and such. If you do remember some of these threads, then you would remember that I wanted to create a magic caster pew pew machine type of character. Well I can officially say I have changed my mind. As much as I love magic users, I've realized that you can only get one first-playthrough of a game, one first impression. I'd rather go through the game with a simple sword or axe and heavy armor and these are the reasons why:

1) When you play the game for the first time, you want to have the best experience possible. You want everything to be perfect, but also somewhat difficult. If you play as a melee based character then you will look at other spells + such as shiny and very impressive. That amazing summon looks good and you will have goals and things to look forward to for your second playthrough.

2) You will not have to suffer any penalties given from being a magic user. Obviously magicka and the armor type used would play a huge part of this. ( Speaking of which, will armor give a magic disadvantage? )

3) Some of you may argue that the game is supposed to be played like this. Skyrim is obviously the land of the Nord, the tough melee type. It only makes sense to create a melee user because of this.

4) Continuing a bit off of number 1, your next playthrough as a magic type would be more significant and you will, at least temporarily, feel like you've achieved something amazing once you've unlocked that spell that the lich kept casting at you on your first playthrough that kept making you lower the difficulty or reload a save.

It is because of those reasons, and because of past experiences with adventure games, that I will be creating a melee character as my first character.

As of now, what do you think will be the playstyle of your first character? Feel free to give reasons why you've chosen that specific playstyle.

I plan to try my hand at rolling a badass blind Orc bandit.

Basically because I like the screenshot.

Debuff glass caster.

Quick question, do you mean the caster will be a strictly debuff only user with a few damaging spells, or more of a support character with the need of a companion(s)?

Well, he kind of depends on if spell creation is still in and if they have weapon types that fit him. Basically hes a Argonian Witchdocter that casts "curse" spells on targets, then accompanies that up with a correlating poison on a rudimentary dagger. In Oblivion it was a Grummite dagger, in Morrowind he used spears. He also uses the occasional magic staff. Hes glass because hes a naked witchdoctor. In Oblivion all he wore was the Talisman of Abatement, Helm of Oreyn Bearclaw, wrist irons and his loin clothe.

I'm going to be an Altmer riddled with scars and tattoos, he's going to be horribly aged and skilled in every magic school, main focus will be conjuration. I look forward to using him, I might make him use maces a lot too. Lots of curses and lightning spells as well.

Do you plan on playing the game without looking at the screen, if so I would consider your playstyle hardcoe!

Definitely duel wielding caster. Summons are a must. No armor, only enchanted clothing with offbeat enchantments (fortify speed, feather, detect life, etc). Maybe a staff.

Yeah, it was probably one of my favorite builds to play in Oblivion. Very interesting situations you can get into. I have a bunch of unique, novel builds like that.

I'm going to roll as a Nord barbarian, a brutal fighter that utilizes speed and agility more than heavy armor to stay alive.

He will focus in alteration, illusion, conjuration, enchanting, smithing, and one-handed(blades). Sub-focus in speechcraft, alchemy, and sneak.

He's a warrior at heart, but a Magi in trade.

Combat is very in your face. Fights primarily with a bound dagger and spells. The name of the game is mayhem; summons a few daedra, furies enemies into fighting each other, turning invisible and stabbing people in the back. When fights are one on one, he'll use a shield spell and his forged and enchanted katana.
Though mostly he just avoids fights, usely walking right past possible combatants with his illusion.

Outside of battle, he's your average drunkard/stoner/con-man. Makes weapons and enchants items to buy drugs and mead. Seducing and charming people with his silver-tongue and spells. Kind of a wandering hermit, doesn't stick around long.

Based on Todd's interview with the German network where he mentions some exciting stuff for Alchemy, I think Skyrim is going to be a lot of fun for anyone who's into crafting poisons.

I will play as an Argonian Battlemage, who duel-wields a sword and a dagger, and uses Magic when neccesary. also, i guess i will play a thief character after this.

Hopefully we get some sort of spell creation, other builds of mine depend on it.

I'll be playing a Dark Elf that uses heavy armor and a sword and shield with some destruction magic thrown in. This may be hard though, with the way combat works in Skyrim.
