The positive spider thread

Post » Sun Jun 12, 2011 9:58 am

The guys with spider phobia have had numerous threads, let's make for a change one for people who are actually excited about the addition of the hairy stalkers in Skyrim.

What is going to be your weapon and/or tactic of choice to defeat them? I'm mostly interested in their animations. The magazines that attended the Utah demo talk about a "creepy and intense" sneak attack of a spider that dropped from the cave ceiling. I wonder if that will turn out to be a unique staged "boss event" or is it just one of the regular spider behaviors.

Here are some animations and actions that I would like them to have:
- being knocked upside down and desperately shaking their legs trying to restore;
- when severely hurt trying to hide in narrow places or reclimb on the walls/ceiling;
- dismemberment;
- trapping people/creatures.

Clusters of baby spiders would be a nice view too.

Also, do you think spiders should be mute or have weird noises like in the horror movies?
Discuss and remember to always carry a torch and look up the ceilings : )

I am also so excited Spiders are back.... The jump factor is endless with spiders. If they are up on ceilings of caves I will be thrilled.

They should not be mute, I would like them to have a creepy noise they make when attacking, or even just stalking.

I am often surprised at how many people i have met in my life that are afraid of spiders, it seems to be very common indeed, if i was head of a big MMO or game like that i would remove all spider mobs and increase my subscribers by about 30% :hehe:

I have massive arachnophobia and I can't wait to find myself running from them while screaming like a little girl!

I'm TERRIFIED of spiders. That said, the only way to go is to charge headlong into them, greatsword up and ready to swing! I expect them to have crazy and unrealistic noises, just to add to their creepy level. Let's face it, anything that's worth being scary is only scary if the music/sound match the scene.

I also expect them to use cheap hit-and-run tactics and shoot webs at you, while also having heavy-hitting melee attacks at the same time. I think that these spiders should be just as scary as that giant slaughterfish in Oblivion (which also scared the crap out of me). They should also be just as unexpected, and only arrive at the worst possible times, just like the dragons haha.

I say they should make a loud screech as jump down on you. Kind of like Cliffracers...

Have you ever tried to watch a scary movie with the sound turned off? It reduces the scary factor by up to 90%. I believe the same would apply here, personally.

Great thread! Oh, I can just imagine the intensity.
I'm reckoning the only way to fight a spider is with a huge, two-handed axe, because I can imagine my character lumbering around swinging and manically at this giant, hairy arachnid and hacking off its many limbs. I hope they are very frustrating, coming out to fight before scuttling away in a dark crevice or up a wall, while you raise your axe and prepare for anything.

Lolz nice thread.
I can't wait to kill the creepy bastards. Of course I'll favor the ranged and painful attacks such as fireballs and flaming arrows. And some slowing traps as, judging by the size in that screenshot, these bastards should run fast.

As for animations I hope they don't overuse paralyze on me, I hate hate hate being trapped and especially by something that hideous. I'd use a torch in close combat to see them burn and scream.

Another nice spider AI would be if they fear fire so much that they would hide and never attack you as long as you have a torch equipped. I can vision this cool scene where the bastard jumps on me but I quickly equip a torch and start walking towards it and it retreats and I push it this way to the end of the cave, where it will either attack or climb the walls.

I don't think the spiders have to make sounds. They're sneakier and harder to notice without them. Maybe they can make a little sound when they're moving, but if they decide to screech sometimes when appropriate I'm fine with it too. There's also going to be spider webs. I can't wait.

That's mostly about the music. Imagine hearing falling rocks, the music getting more intense with squealing violins, and then BAM. But that's the horror genre, I don't think this slow and scary approach would work in a TES/RPG game. Because of that, I might have to agree with you. But they shouldn't make too much noise :P

Yeah, but I think you need a mix of what you said and what SwedishBezerker said.
You don't want dead quiet obviously, but I think what Bezerker was getting at was it would be better if they snuck up on you, with your only warning the treacherous scuttling of their legs. I'd love to be bending down, looting a chest, or strolling towards the end of a dungeon, before I hear that deathly scuttle that echoes from all angles.

i want to chop their legs off, and it would be nice if they have cool attacks, like the dragons, when they pick up the giant from the ground or when they it ate the guard

Oh god, you've just reminded me of one of the things I absolutely hated in Arena. Scaling up a wall out of water, only to be confronted by a group of spiders who paralyze you and push you back into the water, in which case you drown. Let's hope the spider doesn't decide to push you off a cliff instead :/.

As for the spider noises, when you guys put it like that, I suppose that would be much more terrifying than just random noises. Though to be honest, in Arena and Daggerfall, the thing that always got me the most was the sound of enemies lurking close by, but not being able to see them...If I could hear a familiar scuttle in a dark place, I would probably soil myself.
