The pronunciation of CHIM?

Post » Thu Jan 14, 2010 4:04 pm

I always pronounced it like CHIMe without the "ch" noise.

Ack, I should have known it was 'Kim'. 'Cause I always read 'Chimer' as 'Kim-mer', and it's the same thing. *slaps head*

Course, Ehlnofex is always written with CAPS LOCK on and with minimal punctuation, meaning it must be shouted as loud as possible in the voice of a dull-witted and spoiled teenager. 100% canon, that.

That pronounciation has been around for quite a while, actually. So long it's almost been forgotten:
Michael : How to Say it All

Pronounced AHLD-Mary. Means 'of the First Folk.' 'Old Mary' is a Colovian corruption, and joke.

Dwemer (the Dwarves) is DWAY-mare. Means 'Deep Folk.'

Dunmer (the Dark Elves) is doon-MARE. Means 'Dark Folk.' Colovian hicks say DUHN-merh, but the Dark Elves laugh at them or strike at them, depending upon the number of hicks present.

Chimer (precursor to Dunmer) is KY-mare. Means 'Changed Folk.' Oops! This is a secret..!

Altmer (High Elves) is AHLT-mare. Means 'High Folk.'

Bosmer (Wood Elves) is BO-mare. Means 'Green Folk.'

And, finally, Daedra is EITHER DAY-druh OR DEE-druh, depending upon your inclination. DEE-druh is the Dunmeri preference and, since they made up the word, will be more acceptable come TESIII. Means 'Our Stronger, Better Ancestors.'

The jump from Chimer to CHIM isn't far.

Ach. I could have sworn I've heard characters in Oblivion pronounce these "DUHN-mer", "AHLT-mer", "BAHZ-mer". Or perhaps it wasn't the characters at all, but the voice actors who stand behind them!

Yep, they say "BOS-mer" with a clear S in Morrowind, and "DUHN-mer" too. Not just Colovian hicks neither - even other Mer say it that way.

But this is likely a situation like Tolkien's languages and books, where there are differences between the actual in-world language and the way it's presented in media. After all, English isn't a Tamrielic language, but in the games that's what NPCs (or the voice actors) all speak, and what the dialogue text and books are (mostly) written in.

No, as in "kyme". Not sure how I chose that pronunciation.

Hey, at least someone pronounces it the same way I do. And I'm going to continue to pronounce it that way, regardless of what even MK says. :P

'Kim'

I hope not, that sounds like's a person's name. I have always pronounced it as "chim" as in "chimney. It still sounds silly, but at least it doesn't sound like a person's name. Until they start actually using the term in voiced diologue (have they done so yet? I never heard it.) we can never be sure how it is pronounced though.

/kaɪm/

My proposed way of pronunciation, and it seems the official MK pronunciation too.

'K' as in 'Kim' and 'ime' as in 'time'.

EDIT [2007-Oct-27]: By the way, I pronounce Daedra the Nordic way: /daɪdr?ɑː/

Kim is a girls name and a rather tacky one at that.

They're all girls' names. Shor, CHIM, Aless, Perrif, Orlyan, Shonni-Et.

Wait. Who?

It is actually pronounced "Sorkalamons-tombetkahnuewEstavizshksuhh-visakallomiouT10101010101010101010101010101..." the binary continues with that sequence infinitly. And it is simply the old Ehlnofex word for a Guar. The modern inhabitants of Tamriel just don't realize the Ehlonfey were a very simple people with a needlessly complex language. This is why they didn't survive.

Well, I've been pronouncing it "Khim", with emphasis on the 'h' (exhale and say it at the same time). I suppose I'll just keep saying it thusly, then

We're Knights of the Round Table,
We dance whene'er we're able,
We do routines and chorus scenes
With footwork impeccable.
We dine well here in Camelot,
We eat ham and jam and spam a lot.

We're Knights of the Round Table,
Our shows are formidable,
But many times, we're given rhymes
That are quite unsing-able.
We're Opera mad in Camelot,
We sing from the diaphragm a loooot.

In war we're tough and able,
Quite indefatigable,
Between our quests we sequin vests,
And impersonate Clark Gable.
It's a busy life in Camelot,
I have to push the pram a lot.

How do you pronounce CHIM? Is it like "chimney" or the European pronunciation of "ch" making it "kim"?
'Kim'

That's the same way you pronounce my wife's name. Here I was looking at CHIM everyday, and I didn't even realize it. ;)

MK's pronunciation suggests that perhaps if we watch enough cartoons we'll discover how to make CHIM possible?

Yo, I was slow to realize that was a giggle-eliciting corny, yo!

Apparently, it's not "tsim", "tchim", retroflex "tchim", "shim", retroflex "shim", "tch'im", "xim", "k'im", or even that queer consonant that goes between g and k like "gkim."

It's "kim"!
