The pronunciation of CHIM?

Post » Thu Jan 14, 2010 5:26 pm

How do you pronounce CHIM? Is it like "chimney" or the European pronunciation of "ch" making it "kim"?

Try looking at Velothi Stronghold names and Dunmer names, and decide which makes more sense in those cases.

knowing what I do about said names, I don't think that'll help.

Is the word CHIM intended to be spoken in the first place? I've only ever heard of it written, either in a book or on Vivec's big fat floppy MUATRA.

Vivec and Almalexia shout it at Hogithum Hall. It came from Veloth's teachings, and he must have been an orator of some sort.

I just checked, and there is not a single Dunmeri name listed on Zaph's treasury that begins with 'c'!!

Neither do any dungeons with dunmeri names begin with that letter. Odd.

Yes it is. And I didn't know that bit about them shouting it.

Dangit! I hate pronounciation reality checks.

But seriously, why no names that begin with the letter C?

Dunmeri names? Never noticed.

CHIM is from the Ehlnofex, though.

Man, that blows.

Chim as in Chimney sounds allot better. Kim is a girls name and a rather tacky one at that.

Although we now have the authoritative pronunciation from MK, somehow I always preferred pronouncing it with a K and a long I, as in "time".

Then it could be tonal like Keening and Sunder. :P chime

[censored] I've been saying it wrong!

Okay, since a huge bit of ES is (was) choice I'm gonna choose to say it with the "Ch" since I can't kick the habit of saying exactly what I see.

That pronounciation has been around for quite a while, actually. So long it's almost been forgotten:
Michael : How to Say it All

Pronounced AHLD-Mary. Means 'of the First Folk.' 'Old Mary' is a Colovian corruption, and joke.

Dwemer (the Dwarves) is DWAY-mare. Means 'Deep Folk.'

Dunmer (the Dark Elves) is doon-MARE. Means 'Dark Folk.' Colovian hicks say DUHN-merh, but the Dark Elves laugh at them or strike at them, depending upon the number of hicks present.

Chimer (precursor to Dunmer) is KY-mare. Means 'Changed Folk.' Oops! This is a secret..!

Altmer (High Elves) is AHLT-mare. Means 'High Folk.'

Bosmer (Wood Elves) is BO-mare. Means 'Green Folk.'

And, finally, Daedra is EITHER DAY-druh OR DEE-druh, depending upon your inclination. DEE-druh is the Dunmeri preference and, since they made up the word, will be more acceptable come TESIII. Means 'Our Stronger, Better Ancestors.'

The jump from Chimer to CHIM isn't far.

I guess all the Morrowind dark elves are Colovian Hicks. I never heard any of the sore-pusses call themselves 'doon-mer.' But that was Redguard era lore, so maybe its just archaic. Bosmer isn't BO-mer anymore either.

Is the aldmeri tongue related to the Elnofex?

Pretend it is the CHIM in CHIMERA. ( pronounced KIM-AIR-A, but some people insist on pronouncing it KIM-UR-A, or KY-MARE-A)

(Ironically-- the spirits of nirn are a kind of chimera, aren't they? *giggle*)
