The 10 Races of Skyrim

Post » Wed Mar 09, 2011 11:15 am

(Before I start this off, let me say that I know about the various threads concerning exclusively http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1164722-orcs-in-skyrim/, http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1177943-any-screenshots-or-info-on-wich-breed-of-khajiit/, http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1177842-if-bosmer-are-still-annoying-little-pip-squeaks-i-will/, etc. My hopes for this one is that it may become a place where the whole forum can discuss their thoughts on advancements for any race, whether it be voice actors, special abilities, physical make-up, or anything in between. Now with that out of the way... )

"All races will look better and more distinct." ~ Todd Howard

Great news indeed. Though it's simply one small quote that may not mean a lot, I'd really like to share with you my wishes for each and every one of them as I have many ideas. They're mostly concerning improved appearances over Oblivion. Please realize that everything below is merely my own opinion and I mean no offense to anyone.

http://i643.photobucket.com/albums/uu155/oblivionlp/highelf.jpg: It's obvious that in order to set them apart from Dunmer, the devs added some unique features which really didn't improve the way they looked. Notice how far out the brow protrudes. You could practically eat soup out of the indent in their foreheads. To me, I would think that Altmer would be the most beautiful, majestic race in all of Tamriel. I mean it's just common folklore to make elves pretty. Tolkein did it and I assume Bethesda was aiming for the same thing. After all, why suggest that Dark Elves were punished when they actually look more attractive than High Elves? I want them to be quite the sight in Skyrim. Handsome males that you envy and gorgeous females that outshine the most lusty argonian maids. I'm not a big fan of the yellow skin either but that seems to be trademark.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2798/4256607826_2cfa6876ea.jpg: Boy, what a disappointment it was to behold this sorry looking creature after I read the manual and saw such great http://ravenoaks.org/oblivion/images/breton.gif. In Oblivion they were like fat, wrinkly versions of Imperials. In Skyrim, I really hope they follow up with what they had originally intended them to be. http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-8TCz6shD7mU/TZTvPlK9IfI/AAAAAAAAAfw/zCL4zjvYwlc/s1600/Skyrim_DraugrGroup.jpg tells us that the team has been working on skeletons showing through bodies more. Something less drastic could be applied to the revamped Brets as well as guant faces, long fingers, and slightly pointed ears that display their elven heritage. Make them more witch-like. They are the most capable in the arcane arts when it comes to humans. Oh, and when developing their nature, please give them more flamboyant and eccentric personalities like lore implies.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2783/4255940951_d9303e10d5.jpg: As a beast race, Khajiit have a lot of potential to look amazing. I know most of you out there want Morrowind style legs. I do too to some extent. What the devs must have been getting their ideas for Khajiit legs from were probably http://courses.washington.edu/chordate/453photos/skeleton_photos/cat-hind-leg.jpg. This time I suggest they look more into http://digicoll.library.wisc.edu/Science/data/images/MmBib/VetAnatImg/xlarge/0054x.jpg. With some minor reshaping, you could fit that into a boot, no? Whatever the case, paws must be included this time around rather than furry human feet. Speaking of fur, I believe more shades should be optional. I don't want to go against lore and ask for cheetah spots (we are still Suthay-Raht after all) but to this date, there has been no mention of any strain of snow cats. Why couldn't those in Skyrim have adapted to the environment around them and taken on a coat similiar to that of a snow leopard? And it would be only natural for their hair to be much thicker than before. Bushy tails anyone? I also want to the the choice of changing the color of their irises this time. My cat has blue eyes, why can't my Khajiit?

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4059/4256204229_d5be6c2350.jpg: I wasn't too keen on how these lot looked either. Foreheads slanted, elongated noses... they just had really pointy faces. It looked unnatural. Lady Syl was the only good looking Wood Elf I ever saw and she was in Shivering Isles. Keep them short and agile, it fits them perfectly but perhaps they should have less rediculous hair styles? I mean it's like the devs are trying to make them silly looking. I know we're not in Valenwood and I can't expect every Bosmer out there to be some badass ranger/hunter but I've never seen any Wood Elf in Oblivion that intimidated me. They are the most skilled marksmen so why not give them something unique like http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2305/2495028541_0f6808c82b.jpg to reflect their advanced peripheral depth perception? It makes sense and would most certainly give those with bovinaphobia the creeps.

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4029/4256803712_90812f1165.jpg: Here's a little lore for you in case you didn't already know the story behind Pariah Folk. Trinimac was a God amongst an ancient sect of Aldmeri elves. One day, he did something to piss off the Daedric Prince Boethiath so Boethiath decided to curse Trinimac and his followers, making Trinimac Malacath and his people Orcs. One thing we must remember out of all of this is that Orcs were in fact cursed by a Daedric Lord. I think they should appear more ogrish and sinister rather than sophisticated peoples. Ram horns, jagged claws, darker skin, bigger tusks. Maybe the horns might be a little hard to implement but tribal peircings and body augmentations that exhibit endurance of pain such as http://studentsmetro.com/fun/dat/542/kala-kaiwi.jpg (WARNING: link may disturb you) would be most appropriate. I also expect to see more barbaric acts from this race in Skyrim. Gross me out a little.

http://i643.photobucket.com/albums/uu155/oblivionlp/darkelf.jpg: Now, I never played Morrowind but I hear they made a mean Dark Elf. The average gamesas forum goer would probably agree that the Dunmer in TES III were very well done unlike the blue Altmer in Oblivion. Going back to those roots would appease many fans. My thoughts? Like the orcs, they were punished by a Daedric Prince. Azura in fact (well, I mean according to some lore) so is dark skin and red eyes truly a bad thing? Is that enough? How about some http://www.nefariousfilms.com/Images/Monsters/jeeperscreepers.jpg? I don't know why you would say that's unoriginal. Well good thing they're recieving a new slimy, salamander-like skin texture as seen http://thegamingliberty.com/wp-content/uploads/SKYRIM55.jpg. Atleast I believe that's a Dunmer. Could be a goblin... or an Orc... Just kidding, it's a Dunmer.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2465/4256964516_e3a6c8d23d.jpg: I can't think of any problems I have with these people what-so-ever. What do I mean, these people? The warrior race from the islands of Yokuda ofcourse. It's hard to improve on what is supposed to be an equivalent of a real life race of human-beings. They can't be magically redesigned to have horns or tails. The only thing I can suggest is to make them look more realistic, which I'm sure they will do "reguardless" heh heh.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2715/4255938689_43a48138d4.jpg: Like Redguards, there's not much you can do with a race that has been modeled after real people. Just make them not so ugly this time.

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4044/4256593738_85e3feca2d.jpg: One of the most interesting races in Tamriel, this creature also has boat loads of potential to be awesome in Skyrim. Simply reading about the anatomy of these swamp critters can get your blood pumping. They are known for their various amphibian traits including gills that allow them to breathe underwater and fins that sprout from their heads but one would wonder... how well would an Argonian fare in a place that is cold and near inhospitable to their race? I suspect major differences from the Argonians of Oblivion and Morrowind such as sturdy tails, thicker skin, and more of a dinosaur-like appearance similiar to http://honolulu.hawaii.edu/dinos/rex_head_large.gif rather than that of a lizard. http://fc05.deviantart.net/fs70/f/2011/027/5/5/skyrim__s_argonian_drawing_by_xxxbanditxxx-d383uyh.png, please oh please make the swimming animations exceedingly different from the other races. I'd like to see my Argonian clasp his arms at his sides and propel himself with his tail instead of a lame briaststroke (which is ok for everyone else). Again, as a beast race they should have noticably different feet. Something along the lines of http://cdn2.arkive.org/media/AC/AC8340AE-D715-4BDF-B0A0-76D6CCC5D3F5/Presentation.Large/Komodo-dragon-claws.jpg would suit them fine.

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4035/4256944660_e05a482fa7.jpg: Last but not least, NORAWAWAA! So far, they look http://img545.imageshack.us/img545/2751/dovahkiin.jpg. Just let me get in on some of that braided hair, flowing beard action and I'll be fine. Can't wait to be a http://gameoption.net/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/Skryim-Trailer-anolysis-16-Dual-Wield-590x358.jpg.

Even if they don't turn out as hoped, I'm sure I will still be blown away. Now, lets hear your thoughts!

where you said the"dunmer" killing the goblin, it actually looks more like a nord silent killing a goblin.

Honestly, I'm not too fond of the Argonian portrayed in the Concept Art. :yuck: Based on the image, I just don't feel it. Hopefully we'll get some real screens soon.

I agree, I can't say I think Dovahkiin looks amazing either. He still looks on the squishy-faced side, but I'm sure I'll be proven wrong upon more screen shots. The still of the men fighting is somewhat promising.

Great thread! Thanks for the insight, character creation/development is one of the reasons why I love TES.

Thank you! And you're welcome. :P

That was sort of a joke pertaining to another topic on the fourms. I'd rather this thread didn't take that path... lol

i wonder if we'll see extra races to choose from, i'd like to see Ka Po' Tun myself with an appearance akin to this.

http://fc07.deviantart.net/fs70/i/2010/286/9/4/weretiger_by_koutanagamori-d30nyog.jpg

i know they live in the continent of akavir but it would still be awesome to see them, they have to be properly explained as to why they would be in skyrim however (maybe something to do with tosh raka, the "tiger dragon").

bottom-line: very unlikely, but still an awesome idea IMO, especially for those that want more feline races apart from the khajiit.

Bretons:

I mean DAM...

While Bretons have elven blood they should not look anything like half elves IMO. They have never had pointy ears in the games adding it now would svck IMO. If people want to play an elf there are a ton of options that away. Give people who don't want to play an elf a single frigging race decent at magic. The elf blood is so diluted at this point all you should be seeing is the higher magical aptitude and they are a bit taler and paler.

I like all the deviant art you've been putting forth so far. The orc you linked to is so fierce looking. Ka Po' Tun most certainly won't be a playable race but it could be cool to see a band of weary Akaviri adventurers akin to the Qunari in DA2. As you said though, very unlikely.

You may be right about the ancestory being hard to trace through means of appearance but there is a big difference between http://blogwaybaby.com/Elf%20Ears.jpg and http://i643.photobucket.com/albums/uu155/oblivionlp/woodelf.jpg. Adding a slightly pointed tip to their ears wouldn't hurt anything. Either way, it doesn't bother me as long as they make the Breton race more than just Imperial variants.

I don't think Altmers are supposed to be "the most beautiful race", they're more like literal "high-brow" elves. They act superior because they're smarter than everybody else, and mostly because they can.

Bretons should be more than just the "not different at all" version of Imperials.

I liked Oblivon Khajiit and I don't know what other change are needed. They don't need to be savage jaguar warriors, they're more sneaky than that. Also, I like to wear boots...

I had no problem with Bosmer being the "halfling" race, but yeah a bit more agility would be nice for them. Also I always found them the most human amongs elves.

Orcs... doesn't need horns. They're big green/brown pig people. And they don't seem to be a very barbaric race either, something like a more sophisticated Krogan.

Dunmer are good as they are, maybe they need sharper elven features like in Morrowind but that's it.

Redguard are okey too, it was just Oblivion's skin color that made everything look wierd.

Imperials are Imperials...

I hope Argonians are going to be more of a mix of Morrowind and Oblivion. They should stand uptight, like anybody else, but they should have some beastial features, like the head, or thicker tail. I mostly base this on the concept art...

Nords are big...

Ah yes, I found a screenshot of the altmer in the tavern. It is not a very good one, however.

I rather like its alien appearance, which I think rather suits them.

Maybe you're right but they are ugly for the most part in Oblivion. It shouldn't be that way IMO.

Bretons should be more than just the "not different at all" version of Imperials.

Without a doubt.

I liked Oblivon Khajiit and I don't know what other change are needed. They don't need to be savage jaguar warriors, they're more sneaky than that. Also, I like to wear boots...

An unheard of amount of fans would definitely disagree with you there. I being one of them.

I had no problem with Bosmer being the "halfling" race, but yeah a bit more agility would be nice for them. Also I always found them the most human amongs elves.

Yup.

Orcs... doesn't need horns. They're big green/brown pig people. And they don't seem to be a very barbaric race either, something like a more sophisticated Krogan.

Sure, horns aren't really necessary but barbarism is an absolute must. No sissy orcs. :nono:

Dunmer are good as they are, maybe they need sharper elven features like in Morrowind but that's it.

I rather disliked the striking similarities Dunmer had with other elves in Oblivion. I find it hard to believe you didn't.

Redguard are okey too, it was just Oblivion's skin color that made everything look wierd.

Different shades of black and brown could help out a lot with that.

Imperials are Imperials...

Yeah, pretty much...

I hope Argonians are going to be more of a mix of Morrowind and Oblivion. They should stand uptight, like anybody else, but they should have some beastial features, like the head, or thicker tail. I mostly base this on the concept art...

Agreed.

I agree on most parts, but disagree with the thing about Orsimer. They should not have horns or anything. I don't want them messing with the very basic shape of their appearance. They are like humans with upturned noses, green skin and large lower canines, essentially. How they are presented can be changed, but these basic elements should remain. Also not sure about Dunmer having razor teeth. Bosmer should have black eyes, like they used to, and have a determined hunter style face. All elves should have some of that slightly alien look they did in Morrowind.

This.

And BTW Danger Dan, who wasn't ugly in oblivion?

I really don't think it's right for people to say "most people want x y z." We all have our own opinions, and let's not try to make bold unsubstantiated declarations.

For the beast races, I'd like to see them mostly like in Oblivion but with more little details. They should have actually different toes and fingers than humans (unlike the spray painted ones in Oblivion), but I still prefer them to be plantigrade. It just looks goofy to me otherwise (and digitigrade on two feet is actually anatomically unsound). They may be animal-like races but they are people too. I don't think they should permanently look angry or have super-stereotypical behavior like some people want either.

Here's a little lore for you in case you didn't already know the story behind Pariah Folk. Trinimac was a God amongst an ancient sect of Aldmeri elves. One day, he did something to piss off the Daedric Prince Boethiath so Boethiath decided to curse Trinimac and his followers, making Trinimac Malacath and his people Orcs. I also expect to see more barbaric acts from this race in Skyrim. Gross me out a little.

I don't want stereotypical brutish Orc. NO race should be some uniform walking stereotype in my opinion. We should find some Nord and Orc magicians, even if they are rarer. We should meet some warrior Altmer or Bosmer, even if they are rare. Walking stereotypes: just say no!

One of the good points of the races in this series is that they aren't just cookie cutter designs that all act alike. Something really annoys me about one race always acting the same. It's almost directly what lead me to stop reading the Redwall books when I was younger, because 99% of the time when you saw a race you knew exactly how that character would act or if they could be trusted. That's not how it should work, in my opinion.

Every character I ever created.

Lots of NPCs in Shivering Isles looked good aswell as a small amount from the original game such as Narina Carvain. High Elves were exceptionally ugly though.

I really don't think it's right for people to say "most people want x y z." We all have our own opinions, and let's not try to make bold unsubstantiated declarations.

The single time I did play that card, it was used to explain the fact that most people wanted a certain feature. It's fine if you don't.

There can be such a thing as a barbaric magician. Tell me, when did you ever find a peace loving Orc in Oblivion? It was a 'stereotype' anyway since all of them had the same "I'm gonna rip your arms off!" mindset. Besides, that's the way Orcs in TES are supposed to be. They're mad at the world for being so cruel to them. The problem was that it wasn't done to it's fullest. They should've been meaner.

unless another daedric prince put another curse on them, i'd say yes, it would be too short a time.

Most of the complaints are because of the stupid facegen middleware.

Definitely!

All I'm hoping for is a grittier feel this time around. The pool of faces in Morrowind was tiny, and BSG overcompensated in Oblivion with the face-gen software. Sure, there were infinite degrees of freedom, but every face being different doesn't help if the models and textures inspire visions of coloured latex roughly glued onto department store mannequins.

Yesh, orcs should look frightening, with faces only their mothers could love. I want to be gripped by revulsion each time I see an Orc face, not knowing if they're going to greet me, or eat my face off. Dunmer should get the same treatment. Both of these races have been cursed by Daedra, and no self-respecting Daedra would create a curse which makes you look more like Shrek (http://gandt.blogs.brynmawr.edu/files/2009/04/kurdan.jpg) than a filthy barbaric creature (http://www.otherlandtoys.co.uk/lotrOrc800.jpg).

Making Orcs and Dunmer less appealing visually actually makes them more interesting in the context of both gameplay and lore. Here are two races cursed to be instinctively hated by all other races, but are still trying to manage as a people. That's fodder for a lot of gripping conflict right there!

Yesh, orcs should look frightening, with faces only their mothers could love. Most of the comments I see from other peeps are about their fetishes in Elves and what-not; personally, I am so glad the annoying elves turned out that way in Oblivion

"Not so tall and beautiful and enchanting now are ya stupid arrogant annoying elves!"

Sorry, I just dislike them elves, nothing personal towards your topic!

I like every other races except the Elves. Well, Dunmers are fine since they're cursed, and so long they keep the Bosmers short, I have no problem with those.
[end of idle ranting]

But for the sake of background-lore-realism, yes, let's hope Elves will be more lore-described looking in Skyrim.

Edit:

Totally, somewhat I find the Dunmers exotic and desirable, not so skinny/weak looking for males and... and... Viconia-affection on the females? For me, heh.

Unless they have a collective consciousness "they" think this or "they" should be that makes no sense. It's fine if there is a culture where this is common, but I really don't like the idea of lumping everyone together. There were some Orcs that seemed more civilized than others in Oblivion, as it should be in my opinion, not one dimensional savage brutes.

Different levels of resentment were there, however, the Orcs in Oblivion were rarely without. And that is the Orsimer culture as a whole. I see your point but I don't want every member of one race to be exactly the same either. Who does? Stop being snarky. You know what I meant by "they".

Besides, I originally implied only that I want those that are barbarians to be a great deal more savage. And whether they're malicious or not, they have no say in what they look like. Boethiath intended Orcs to be grotesque & horrifying so I expect them to be as such.

Totally, somewhat I find the Dunmers exotic and desirable, not so skinny/weak looking for males and... and... Viconia-affection on the females? For me, heh.

And we're the ones with the elf fetishes?
