The Rail Rifle - A future mod for Fallout 4

Hey everyone,

Some of you might recognize me as the creator of such mods for Fallout 3 like the http://www.nexusmods.com/fallout3/mods/11611and my contributions to Project Nevada for New Vegas. I stepped away from modding for a while but Fallout 4 pulled me back in. Now I'm working on some models that I plan to import into the game as soon as the tools become available.

Now, without further adieu, here's what I'm working on: http://imgur.com/gallery/f4d4m

As you can see I have multiple configurations already modeled with more to come. Everything so far is outlined in the imgur album.

Any feedback or ideas are appreciated even though the high poly version of the model is essentially complete right now.

Hey, this is pretty neat. It's a shame that it won't be using railroad spikes like the original though.

The model looks very nice. Can't wait to see textures and the animation for it in practice.

Any chance you'll mod in the other craftable weapons from Fallout 3 (assuming they aren't in the game proper)?

Edit: Whoops. I assumed that this was the Railway Rifle from Fallout 3.

Looks good! As a fan of energy weapons and rail guns, this is definitely going to be in my load order. I don't know the first thing about modeling, but I hope it isn't too hard for you to import your work into F4; I don't know much about the .nif filetype, but I imagine the addition of physical-based rendering changes things a little.

I know it's too early to make a guess about gameplay, but how do you expect you'll put this gun in the game? A unique item found somewhere in the wastes, something we craft all on our own, etc?

We'll see what kind of changes are in store. As for how I will put it in that is definitely TBD. It depends if there are enemy types that might actually carry it etc. Since we won't get the GECK till a few months after release I have plenty of time to figure out what to do. Right now the model and texture are my focus.

You've made me a happy wastelander. I love railguns, they're the prefect combination of ballistic abd electronic weaponry.

If I may make a suggestion for lore... we know that the prewar government experimented with railguns, culminating in the X277 "Viper" Magnetic Rail Cannon. We also know that the prototype was donated to the Museum of Technology in Washington D.C. and that the prototype was looted from the museum some time after the war.

Perhaps this weapon was assume wastelander's attempt to replicate the weapon? Or maybe the institute got their hands on the prototype and developed the technology to rifle form?

Whatever you go with, I'm definitely going to be adding this weapon to my load order! :D

Holy cow, they look BRILLIANT!!!!

As an avid user and a fan to all energy, I can't wait to use & see these in game, they look fantastic and extremely high quality, I only use energy weapons in my gameplays, and these look amazing.

Fallout 4 is still not out yet, and you are already creating high quality mods, thanks for doing such an amazing work on these, they look breathtaking, and the diverse modifications to the weapons are so great and exciting, I am absolutely looking forward to this.

Fallout 4 is not out yet, and I already know my first mod to install!

The Junk jet is basically the old Rock-it launcher, they may have "Steamlined" the Railway rifle into it. ok bad pun....

Laser weapons use "Cells" and Plasma use "Plasma" (creatively enough). Looks like they cut EC/MF. Since Plasma would not make sense in your context, I suggest Cells, but at double the energy cost per shot.

The Vanilla F4 weapons are not striving for much immersion, but if you are - the circular coil & tube (near the stock), and the drum magazine could interfere with firing. Fallout 4 weapons are right-handed only.

Good to see I am not the only one starting early. ;)

The Rock-it launcher did 50 points of damage, and the Junk jet does 100 (more than a Plasma sniper). Fire rate seems to be in the same range, but as long as NPCs are not using it, we can just choose to do likewise. I may modify it into a flamethrower, if they did not remove the flamer fuel from the codebase (new flamers appear to just be modified plasma weapons).

Looks awesome man- I'm a huge fan for the Rail-Gun weapons from 3/NV, and I think you've exceeded their design. My personal favorite is the 2nd iteration you've got there- the end of the barrel looks so damn cool!

Where did you get this information? I was just under the assumption that energy weapons would work like they did in the previous two games.

My only issue with creating a new ammo type is that it will only make it even more rare and more difficult to incorporate into leveled lists and such. I could use 2mm EC ammo like in the old Fallouts but I just don't know what their plans are yet. At the very worst I would need to re-do the body portion but the rest of the pieces I would still be able to keep.

Update!

The majority of the low poly models/normal maps are complete with select pieces remaining. Texturing should begin soon. It will be a healthy mix of metal and wood where applicable.
