The reason behind the Dunmer's current accent?

Post » Sun Jun 03, 2012 5:12 am

I noticed they have an Australian accent. Reasons for this actually make sense.

The population of Australia is descended from British convicts, much like the Dunmer are descendents of a race of mer that was punished by the daedric prince Azura.

The Australia is a large island continent, much like how Vvardenfell is a very large island.

With these two points, does it seem that the Dunmer accent was inspired by these two facts, or am I just mad like the Wabbajack?

My reasoning:

Dunmer-Usually not sixy
Australian accent-sixy

It balances out.

The Dunmer's main male VA for Skyrim is Keith S (I can't spell his last name, too long). He did the voice of Harbinger in ME2 and Joshua Graham in New Vegas. I kinda like the accent although I prefer Craig (Who did the voice work in Oblivion) over Keith. I can't forget about Jeff Baker either who did the Morrowind VA for the dunmers, I'd probably pick him over both of those choices.

As an Australian, that accent sounds like an exxagerated lower class Southern English accent (at least that's what I assumed it was meant to be), not an Australian accent. It also sounds incredibly lame and forced, one of my least favourite voices in Skyrim, along with that haughty, effeminate voice that reminds me of the elves in Oblivion.

Lol it's not an Australian accent, it's just a bad attempt at a London accent. We call it a "dike Van Dyke" Basically when an American tries to do a Brit accent and fails, and ends up sounding like dike Van Dyke. The female version is known as a Mary Poppins.

Btw no races in the game seem to have a set accent, like they did in Oblivion. Some of the Dark Elves have an American accent, same goes for Nords. Some of the Nords sound Scandinavian. Imperial and Redguard also have a lot of mixed accents.

Best VA for Dunmer was Viconia from Baldurs Gate 2

btw, started playing BG2 again with a ton of mods. I realize why the game is so epic long. The individual battles themselves in some cases take forever cause you micromanaging every party member, haha

Khajiit and Argonians seem to have more of a fixed accent than any of the others. Dislike the inconsistency of the other races' voices. And as for the male ghosts, oy vey.

Kinda like seeing an Asian guy with a British accent in the US. Nothing strange about it.

The male ghosts are usually voiced by Craig, haven't heard any unique VA's from a ghost yet. I actually thought he did a good job with the Ghost voices.

He isn't a bad VA, I just think it's odd when a Nord ghost speaks in the same voice as Oblivion's elves. Similarly with his voice for Hircine, it makes Hircine more of a grumpy old man figure than a hunter. Craig would've been best suited as the default Altmer male voice, in my opinion.

It's not Australian, it's just a fail attempt at an English accent, probably meant to be a 17th centuray London accent.

If they were going for a more "European" feel with the voices in Skyrim, then they should've picked Italian-accented VAs for the Imperials (and French-accented VAs for Bretons).
