The Removed Skills...

I'm pretty sure I have guessed which skills have been removed (or combined):

MYSTICISM: DELETED.

ENCHANT AND CRAFTING ADDED.

ACROBATICS AND ATHLETICS HAVE BEEN COMBINED (PLACED UNDER STEALTH)

SPEECHCRAFT AND MERCHANTILE COMBINED.

THE MAGIC SKILLS: DESTRUCTION, ALTERATION, ILLUSION, RESTORATION, CONJURATION, ENCHANT.

THE FIGHTING SKILLS: ONE-HANDED, TWO-HANDED, SMITHING, BLOCK, ARMOR (IN TOTAL), HAND-TO-HAND.

THE STEALTH SKILLS: SNEAK, LOCKPICKING, MERCHANTILE/SPEECHCRAFT, ACROBATICS/ATHLETICS, ALCHEMY, MARKSMAN.

This is just a guess...
Do any of you think I'm right...

You've combined all the skills that were pretty much interchangable (Beth's admitted design policy this time around) and added skills that reflect stuff that you can do.

I approve.

I don't think mining will be a skill. I can see why smithing would be, it takes a considerable amount of talent, and knowledge, something that could be leveled up. So scrap mining, and put Hand-to-Hand back in.

Other than that, I would say the rest is a good guess, but we'll have to see. I can see Bethesda pulling something from left field with these.

I don't think you're right. There's no Marksman skill and where did Mining come from?

I changed mining to hand-to-hand and heavy armor to armor (in total) then added marksman in lightarmors place... I knew I had forgotten something...

I didn't said your distribution doesn't makes sense, I just said I hope you're wrong...(cos I'd hate that oversimplification).

Actually, looking back over this, I imagine sneak and lockpick will be combined into some kind of generic "burglary" skill, but I don't see them combining light and heavy armour any time soon. Too different from one another.

I was originally deleting the armor skills but re-added them to make it fit...
and that burglary skill... they might be stupid enough to make it...

I guessed the 18 skills a few days ago and wrote them down in a text file, and I made the exact same guesses as you. :)

Since we know alchemy is in and that both Combat, Stealth and Magic will have 6 skills each, we can safely put alchemy under stealth.
Mercantile and speechcraft make sense to combine, as do atheltics and acrobatics, though not as much as the former (I'm good at making people like me, but I cant get them to pay a high price for my wares? Or good at selling high and buying low, but hated by everyone? Combine them immediately! :D).
Light and Heavy armor can be combined as well, and instead being strenghtened by different Armor perks.

I think all of this makes sense.

Heavy and light armors are just differently sized armors. They both serve the same purpose: To shield the wearer from damage, with the difference being that light armor sacrifices protection for mobility.
And if a sword, an axe and a mace can be strenghtened by the same skill, I don't see why two different armor types can't.

Thanks... I also kinda guessed this as soon as I heard about enchant, smithing and one-hand...

You're overlooking the fact that those skills are only one layer of the system. The other layer is the perks. While the skills are fairly broad, specialization will likely be done through the perks. Want to be a master of two-handed swords? Raise the two-handed skill and choose the sword perks. Then you'll be good at that, but still not very good at two-handed axes. The result is quite possibly a system that is not only more complex, but allows for even more specialization than the old system did.

I guess I'll have to wait to play it to decide if I like it or not...looking at the facts it certainly looks simplified, but what you said also makes sense, so...

Not liking the one-handed and two-handed weapon arts....

...I would prefer strength and skill, using a light weapon raises skill alot, using a heavy weapons raises strength alot and using a medium weight weapon raises both a bit.

I think that now the classes are out of the window, we do not need to categorize the skills into three archetypes any more, and the players can choose any skill that they like and improve them, as they like:

  • Stealth
  • Security
  • Ranged = (Bow+Crossbow+Throwing)
  • Athletics + (Acrobatics/Dodge/Running/Swimming)
  • Speechcraft + (Mercantile)
  • Alchemy
  • Illusion
  • Conjuration
  • Destruction
  • Restoration
  • Alteration
  • Enchanting
  • Smithing = (Crafting+Repair)
  • Hand to hand
  • One Handed
  • Two Handed
  • Defense = (Block + Parry?)
  • Armor? Survival?

...

I actually just posted about this elsewhere on the internet. Here's my current take on it:

The Mage
Enchanting
Destruction
Conjuration
Restoration
Illusion
Alteration

The Thief
Sneak (merged with Security)
Light Armor
Acrobatics
Alchemy
Speechcraft (merged with Mercantile)
Marskman

The Warrior
One-Handed Weapons (Daggers, Longswords, Hatchets, Maces)
Two-Handed Weapons (Claymores, Warhammers, hopefully Spears)
Block
Smithing
Athletics
Heavy Armor

I've also considered that Acrobatics and Athletics have merged, which leaves a slot open in The Thief's charge for Security or a 'Small Weapons' skill, rather than daggers being in the same class as One-Handed weapons

That's fairly accurate, I think. Block could be renamed Shield, or it will stay the same and you will choose perks between shield and weapon blocking. And it's confirmed from the UI screenshot that the persuading skill is going to be called Speechcraft (no other possible skill with an "aft" at the end). And they'll probably use the name Security, not Lockpicking, just for old times sake.

Witchcraft
Build Raft
Military Draft
Imitate Shaft
Art and Craft
Fire Torpedoes Aft

I think that you have it right and they will use Perks to differenciate the different weapons and the different types of Armor within their catagories

MYSTICISM: DELETED. SPREAD THROUGHOUT THE OTHER MAGIC SKILLS

Just wanted to fix that up for you. Otherwise, that's a pretty good guess.
