The "Return" of the Dwemer?

Post » Sun May 06, 2012 11:47 pm

i'm sure they could return...but would they be all warped and savage like the falmer? If they are brought back it would be cool if they were an unplayable npc race. I don't know that i would like them to come back to be honest though, leave them a mystery, what ever we (people on the lore forum) think about them probably wont be so cool in game

Although i do love there ruins, armor, and some of their weapons

After going through all these torture... Death traps of the dwemer, I've come to the realization that they'd just kill and torture everyone, bleh. They seem like really mean mer. Yargum Bargum was a teddy bear compared to these guys.

I don't think they did it out of spite or viciousness.
The traps seem more like security than anything.

They managed to get on everyone's bad side. I haven't read a positive external account of the Dwemer ever, I think.

Oh, I certainly hope so.

Maybe if they did come back their would be more Bargums with that teddy bear quality about them.

One can only hope.

I don't think they'll come back.

But its certainly possible for the PC to go back, as the Skyrim MQ demonstrated.

Did anyone notice that Falion, the guy that cures your Vampirism, says he's spoken with Dwemer?
Last, but certainly not least, we have http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Skyrim:Falion, who claims he's seen Dwemer. Being a Redguard, it seems out of the question that he could possibly have been alive during their time, Telvanni magics included. Perhaps he's referring to Yagrum Bagarn? Perhaps he merely meant he saw a Dwemer Spectre. Or perhaps the Dwemer still exist somewhere, or there's just one more Deep Elf still roaming around somewhere. A very heavy claim that, unfortunately, we get no more information about.
;)

Really, it was that line that made me post this thread. I had seen the other three "points" I had mentioned in the original post before and brushed them off, but that was the last straw. I knew I wanted to start a discussion about this, as I can't help but feel that Bethesda considers the Dwemer still accessible in some way, at least.

Could a Dwemer bind his soul into a Animunculi? Sorta like a robot lich? Would a Dwemer even attempt that sort of thing?

In a related note I have always wondered how Dwemer Animunculi were "Programed". And don't say "it's magic".

Isn't he a dunmer who claims to have also explored other worlds? I assumed he was a less-incistuous version of Divayth Fyr, and chilled with dwemer before they disappeared.

Y'all think the dwemer had any arts? Maybe a lil music? Lil 'twang' in there bong and screech?

I'm thinking if Sheogorath ever wanted to mess with anyone, he'd throw some dwemer 'music' in with the vision of a 'flashy' return.

Falion is a Redguard, actually. That does sound far more like an http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Oblivion:Faelian name, though, or Merish in general.

The "how" of Dwemer machines is unknown to the other races, and thus unknown to us. We know they use a lot of steam and a lot of soul gems.

I found a journal in Arkathand(sp?) that stated that the Soul gems were not the source of power in the Dwemer machines, but that no discernible source could be found with in them. So there is some magic of some form or another used to a degree. There must be.

Perhaps the soul gems simply posses the primal nature of the being trapped within, and transfer that nature to the Machine?

Idea relating to mine. I wonder if that's what they do to there dead. A dwemer would just get bound in a soulgem apon death and get plugged in to a Animunculi. I know there are dwemer ghosts(mysteriously absent from skyrim) but I've wondered why there are not any dwemer tombs or graveyards. Or did everyone get donated to "Magicscience" and cremated when they where done?

If you want new, awesome, Morrowindish stuff, look to MK. If you want things more along the lines of Daggerfall or Oblivion, look to other gamesas writers.

Tbh, in the case of Skyrim, it is like they finally started putting their minds around some of the stuff MK wrote. We got something that was both a rehashing of previous theoretical lore stuff, and a sort of middle ground between Morrowind/standard gamesas sides.

[EDIT]: One other note: "I also heard a strange story about the centurion spider that we captured and sent back to Cyrodiil. The ship captain I hired wrote to me with an odd story. He said that the spider nearly broke through its cage several times while near Vvardenfell, but once he left the Sea of Ghosts, the centurion suddenly stopped working. What happened next shows that he had more wits than I gave him credit for. He ordered the ship turned about and as they approached Vvardenfell again, the centurion began moving just as suddenly. This is a curious phenomenon and certainly deserves more investigation." - http://www.imperial-library.info/content/morrowind-senilius-report

The only way I can see to interpret this is that the constructs only work when they are near the Heart (or just Vvardenfell itself). So how does that work in Skyrim?

Vvardenfell's Dwemer were separate from the Hammerfell and Skyrim Dwemer, I assume. Different tech and culture. The Heart was the key to the Vvardenfell constructs; soul-gems seem to be the same thing with regards to the Skyrim constructs.

Huh. But still, powerful wizards of any race can live for really long times, and I think the Ragada arrived in Tamriel before the Dwemer disappeared, right?

I doubt the heart had anything to do with that. Before Skyrim the assumption was that power or control signals were broadcasted from Dwemer towers. There were Animuculi in Hammerfell aswell. So I reckon soul gems are just an addition for flavour and gameplay.

Really? I'd always thought it had something to do with the Heart, and I'd heard others say the same.
But soop's post makes me think it isn't the soul gems anyways, so...

Since the only soul gem mining happens in a dwemer ruin (iirc), I wonder if maybe the dwemer were just using the soul gems as they would any other crystal.

Without further evidence, its the most logical conclusion in my mind. The conclusion I'm going to have to continue with until there is more evidence.

Nope. The Ra Gada arrived in Tamriel a little over a hundred years after the Battle of Red Mountain. It's also worth noting that Falion mentions he has seen a Dwemer as an example of the crazy things he has seen. I imagine if he had seen the Dwemer people casually as they still lived in Tamriel, it would not have been worth mentioning then.

Something tells me he's actually seen Dwemer. Now the means of how is an entirely other question. Azura Vision? Meridia dream? Sheogorath hilariousness?! Who knows.

What do we usually say about the guy gibbering nonsense?

"yeah right!"

Well... Sometimes.

But some of the time doesn't that nonsense turn out to be true?

Well, interest in Dwemer technology seems to have increased in Skyrim (slight spoilers), with the excavation and museum at Markarth, the Synod messing around in one (although they are looking for the Staff of Magnus) and one of their numbers saying the orrrery at the Arcane University is world renowned. So with the power hungry Thalmor still being a threat, I could see a potential storyline.

I don't know if this is off-topic, since I haven't seen any dwemer buttons like these, but there is a daedric quest where you have to retrieve parts of Mehrunes Razor. To get a piece of it, you have to kill an orc who has a key and you then go to the treasury below the fort where you are and where the part is. However, to activate the gate which is barring your way you have to use the key on a box on the wall. The box opens, revealing a red button which is incredibly similar to something modern and felt like it was breaking the fourth wall. People who haven't done the quest are probably thinking i'm nitpicking, but I'd like to know someone who has done that bit of the quests' thoughts? Or if people have found something similar elsewhere in Skyrim?

The return of the Dwemer was hinted at in Morrowind.

One Dwemer survived, Yagrum Bagarn althought infected with corprus disease. As a positive side effect, it make him immortal and might have been fully cured eventually because the Nerevarine was cured of said disease. The person trying to cure him, Divayth Fyr was also experimenting with cloning himself (although a female version). In scientific terms, to make a female clone from a male original you just have to delete the Y chromosome and replace it with an X chromosome (double the existing X is fine). I'm sure that mixing with other races would be necessary to prevent the awful effects of inbreeding.

Ah, but the Nerevarine wasn't -cured- of corprus. The disease was only altered/masked in such a way that they would not devolve into a corprus beast. If Divayth was eventually able to recreate those results outside of the Nerevarine, we don't know. However, the notion of a telvanni mage-lord, even Divayth Fyr, creating a race of immortal clone-dwemer is frankly terrifying.
