-Shady Sands: The Escape-
Retreat is not an easy thing.
It is messy, chaotic, disastrous.
The NCR had fallen, the Enclave was rounding up the survivors. They would not offer mercy, waving the white flag would only get you shot. As a result people were scurrying everywhere, backpedaling and trying to run as far as they could.
Dawn was breaking, the first rays of light flooding the destroyed city. The meager vegetation that had managed to come up over the years was destroyed, nothing but muddy ground and charred ruins in the wake of war.
“Hurry the [censored] up!”
I glared the best I could at William. My leg was dragging behind me, I was using my rifle as a crutch. The arthritis in my right leg had swollen my knee joint, making walking hard, running difficult, and sprinting damn impossible.
“Hey, look at her [censored] leg, [censored].”
George was nearly face to face with the other solider, both men refusing to back down. Both very young. I pushed my damp hair back from my face, and leaned against the side of a wall.
“Let it go George, fighting won't solve anything, not with the Enclave at our back.”
George grunted and backed off, and we started our jog across the ruins again. Within a few minutes I was straggling behind, George slowed down to keep up with me,
“George, what are your doing. I am not even part of the NCR go ahead.”
“The NCR is gone Rose, it's everyman for himself at this point. And us snipers work in teams.”
I just smiled and continued my limp.
The pop of gunfire could be heard every now and then, the feeble resistances that took place. I didn't even know where we were going, the Enclave was pushing us back west, that was the only way to escape, but for how long?
My thoughts were interrupted by the Enclave Patrol we had just run into, six men and and a tank.
So this is how it ends?
I looked at George he had his rifle raised, a fierce look illuminated his eyes. He knew what the Enclave did to captives, he was going down fighting, I brought mine up. It was a stand off, I never knew why someone didn't fire first, why wait?
Because your scared of death.
Perhaps, my finger tightened on the trigger,
Here goes nothing,
Whrrrrr.
Dust was suddenly thrown into my eyes and I tackled George to the ground as a powerful .50 caliber machine gun ripped threw the Enclaves soldiers like a sword through paper. I was splattered with gore, flesh and blood. An arm landed at my feet, the tank had been shredded, the operators pulverized.
I looked up at the sky, a helicopter was hovering, a badly painted NCR logo on their side.
Are we really that lucky?
George looked incredulous as it landed, his red, flame like hair blowing all over the place, his handlebar mustache quivering.
“What the-”
“Get in!”
The man operating the machine gun yelled, his hair was jet black and slicked against his skull. His brown eyes squinted into a scowl, his teeth barred beneath his goatee like some kind of animal. A man who was obviously not NCR.
George climbed in and helped me up. He immediately went to the other gun, I sat next to the man on the gun.
“Tell your pilot to get us the [censored] out of here.”
I turned to George as he looked at me incredulously, the copter began to rise up in the sky, giving a clear view of the battlefield. An Enclave flag was waving in the wind, rising from our Capital Building.
“It's over George there's nothing we can do. You said so yourself.”
This was emphasized by the tank and troopers coming around the corner, but my sniper rifle fire and the man on the gun kept them busy as we flew off.
As we sped away, I could finally rest. I collapsed on against the cool metal frame. I looked at the man on the gun,
“Names Rosamond, but most people just call me Rose. Thanks for saving mine and George's asses back there, but you guys are not [censored] NCR. Who the hell are you?”
