The role of sport post-war

Post » Tue Dec 10, 2013 4:59 pm

Hi folks,

New member here, with a quick question about something that has sparked my curiosity for a while now. Forgive me if I'm wrong, but It seems to me there is no participation in sport (other than that of combat, the Pitt springing to mind) anywhere in any of the fallout games I'm familiar with?

Anyway, you'll have to bare with me as my knowledge of Fallout lore is limited to an extent, but wouldn't basic sports, namely baseball, even American football have been retained? Obviously people have more to worry about, but it seems to me sport wouldn't have dissipated quite as dramatically as entailed, even if maintained as a pastime and nothing more?
I know Fallout is a RPG with no relevant link to the sport game genre, but would a world, trying to be immersive have more to it? Even NPC's kicking a ball around? I recall the enclave radio mentioning baseball but to me this seems the only reference I know of.

One final question, pure speculation, but if Fallout 4 does take place in Boston like rumoured, would you like to see sport play a role at all? Obviously the Red Sox are a world renowned franchise, and Fenway park would make for a great addition for exploration in my opinion.

Anyways, apologies for the long post, and if any of this has been mentioned before. Also a big apology if any of these questions sound stupid to you. Hopefully some kind chap can shed some light for me.
Thanks

Goalie Ledoux is pretty much reveals that hockey is still around but on the belief that it is something like a gladiator fight so its possible other sports exist but likely in more violent and deadly forms.

I don't see why not. It's never really been covered, as sports never came up as a relevant field in any of the games.

Hockey at times can be pretty gladiatorial in honesty. It doesn't surprise me that sport has developed to be more violent, with stakes most likely higher than just the plain win/loss scenario. Appreciate the swift reply.

Would I be correct in thinking, that with the somewhat culture/timeline split from ours in the 50's that sport in the fallout timeline wouldn't be modernised much like it is today? Commercialised and such?

Sports were always commercialized. You'd have a hard time finding a moment in history where sports were done exclusively for the sports.

The question of modernization is an intriguing one. It's not whether they'd change, but how they'd change due to the Divergence.

That's a good point. Rule changes, ever differing fashion trends and designs within equipment would be obvious if not for the timeline split. It'd be interesting to see if these were interpreted much like the 50's, or whether altering advancements had been made. Makes me think of that old 70's film Rollerball.

In Fallout 3 and NV there are baseballs and basketballs. On the GOAT there was something about which position in baseball you would play, and a soccer answer comes up. In The Pitt i believe the Pittsburgh Steelers are referenced. And baseball diamonds are in many places, (I think raiders run bases at one of them).

Washington DC has 4 sport teams, The Redskins play in Landover, MD which is NE of DC out of the map. (but maybe due to divergence that they play in RFK stadium, farther east in DC beyond the map. The Nationals play in Nats park, which is farther down south of the map (go to Rivet City and look south, thats where the Nats stadium should be). The Wizards (Bullets by divergence perhaps) and Capitals play in DC Chinatown, which i guess is a region in DC we can't visit. I'm sure sports played a big role in the Fallout world, but it's not as important in the post apocalypse.

But in future Fallout games I wouldn't mind seeing a ruined and renovated stadium/arena being used by Goalie Ledoux type character's.

To add to what's been said there is some sort of fighting ring in the middle of san fransisco though i'm not sure what style you can also learn from the guy in the ring (lo pan?).

Also isn't camp golf a golf course?

I'm not at all familiar with the DC sport teams so thanks for that. Personally, living in an area of Britain where football (soccer to many folk on here) is so huge, a massive part of many lives, bringing a lot of happiness and importantly, revenue to the area, it got me thinking. Obviously I can imagine there are more pressing matters than organised sport at hand post-war, I just didn't think it would have been so scarce.
