The Royal Wedding

Post » Tue Feb 01, 2011 2:03 pm

Well, I won't be getting any sleep tonight.
...and will definately have the tea kettle going pretty much all night.
Now I wish I was there, celebrating with all the people camping out.

I'm ashamed to admit I just put it on record. But I want to see the pretty wedding! And compare it to the Swedish royal wedding last summer. :P

Just out of interest, can anyone point out a single important thing William or Kate have either said or done in their roughly 60 combined years of life on this planet?

*edit* The more I think about it, even circus acts like Lady Gaga have contributed more to society, hell, the Spice Girls are cultural gods of legacy and achievement compared to these two.

Kate went all horizontal on William, William is second in line for the throne and hasn't been a total disaster. He's also done stuff that would expected of someone of his birth and has done some charity work. In other words, he's a royal. That's it.

One of the women hosting the coverage of the wedding for Channel 9 here appears to be wearing a (rather short) dress made out of pictures of Corgis. Alaisiagae may kill me for this but I cannot think of a more stupid thing to be wearing for a wedding. Mutton dressed as lamb anyone?

So I am watching the pre wedding coverage on TLC.
Its pretty interesting, all the things that go into putting on this event, and the biproducts, like souvenirs.

Fair enough, my edit was just a little rant, but the question still stands.

I honestly didn't know there was a royal wedding until this last sunday. I didn't really know it was going to be this big of a deal! haha. but no. I am not going to watch it. First of all I am not really interested, and second, I don't have cable or satellite.

Not to be rude as I'm not sure how big a deal this wedding is to people in the UK, but aren't they using taxpayer money to pay for a portion of it? If I lived there I'd be absolutely livid. I mean... the monarchy at this point is essentially a living history exhibit right? "These people are descendants of descendants of descendants of descendants that actually did something important." type of deal.

Not to minimize the things Princess Diana did in her lifetime, she did a great deal for the fight against AIDS/HIV and that's absolutely worthy of recognition. I'm talking about the folks that generally just dressed up, took pictures and apparently deserved immense respect for that.

There are a lot of things one can complain about when it comes to taxes.
Heck Tony Blair still has round the clock police protection at his home, at least 3 officers out there every day and night.
The Monarchy does a lot of work, and the queen now pays taxes.

Ha!, David Beckham sure has been getting a lot of attention, Victoria looks a bit put out by it, people seemed to be paying attention to him, not her.

They work quite hard I believe. Most of the higher ranking members have a lot of engagements (The queen has 600+ a year I think). They can also be used for state visits. All in all they are fairly cheap and there are a lot more things I would like to cut back on before the monarchy. Also if we didn't have a monarchy we would have a president, which also spends tax payers money

Might be covered by the revenue from the crown estate. My understanding is that all that land makes more money then parliment devotes to the royals expenses.

I can't fathom how anyone but the guests could give a [censored] about this wedding.

From what I saw, the wedding is costing 23 million dollars (so just convert that to pounds). but 20 million is in the security.
It's quite an event, everyone out and about seem to be enjoying it.

Kate is from Bucklebury, as in the ferry in LOTR

Got up a little earlier than usual by EDT standards to watch (I tend to get up fairly early anyway, but this is early even for me) just to make sure I didn't miss anything even with getting my usual morning preparations in. Looks like I made it in time. ;) Ohhh, I can't wait... ^_^

Am I the only one who was secretly hoping something VERY bad would happen at this wedding...

Seriously. The past week has been NOTHING, [censored] NOTHING, but Canadian politics, Wedding and [censored] Jesus shows (easter) on TV ALL THE TIME. Can't we devote ONE god-damned channel to 24/7 Politics and Royal Weddings so I can actually WATCH my [censored] TV without being interrupted on every channel telling me about it?

BTW OP. Thanks for ruining FO CD for me with this thread :/

Wait aren't they just a figure head?

Who cares? Something about tradition I guess.......?

I don't care if their getting married, good for them, but doesn't really affect me in anyway except when people bring it up in conversation or on the news.

My mom is watching it right now, and they keep droning on about what everyone's wearing, utensil placement, and whose there...and lot of other things I don't care to know.

Goodness, six channels show this event. Six GERMAN channels. Two of them are the primary and secondary public broadcasters. Just love how those guys spend all those fees they get, really. ^_^

Why the emphasis on GERMAN?

Do Germany news stations have a good reputation to not report on something that no one cares about. Or that the thing is in England and Germany should worry about its own news?

I'm amazed the news stations over here in the U.S. haven't got this wedding blown out of proportion. Well at least than they normally do

I turn on CNN.. wedding. FOX News.. wedding. I go to CNN.com.. wedding. FoxNews.com.. wedding.

Sadly this is getting excessive coverage everywhere. One of the first things I saw post game last night after Canucks vs. Predators NHL game was some CBC anolyst talking to someone who worried if the prince would ditch her because of whatever shoes she might wear to the wedding. I'm like shoot me now. Thank [insert deity here] this is over with very shortly.

Fairly sure Prince William has been part of a team who have saved lives during his career in the RAF. He's a pilot for search and rescue or something isn't he?

I'd say that's pretty good? How many of us can claim something like that? :)

Granted I don't think it's worth all the pap they're getting for the wedding, but its generally accepted they're going to spend a large portion of their lives doing charity work now.

Is there not a chivalrous one among you? I think it's a splendid thing and I'm not even English.
I think it's good to have some traditions left in the world.
God save the Queen! and Sir Paul, and that cheeky little Elton.

(Notwithstanding the bloody Tory in me).
